The premiere league is like that ex girlfriend that complained when you did something and complain when they eventually are with another guy that doesn't do those things she complained that you did.
Jim, Arteta won the FA cup playing the worst football of his managerial career. Arsenal won 4 FA cups in the space of 7 years being miles away from 1st and were heavily criticized for not challenging for titles and not being involved in the Champions League. That's progression, and performing for the odd game in a small cup competition masks that.

@JohnDoe-xv4rp

Technically a paraplegic darts player could be quite accurate if it's only his bottom half paralysed.
When you look at what Arteta has done at arsenal ok he’s not swimming in trophy’s but he took on one of the hardest jobs in football. Fractured fan base, players going through the motions just picking up their pay cheques, some players that were basically uncoachable on very high wages that meant Arsenal couldn’t sell them. His turned that around brought in players that the fans can get behind, got a style of play that we love to watch and has brought us to the cusp of winning the league twice only being beaten by a team that has vastly superior resources, also let’s not forget how city have got there, the alleged 115 charges. I Don’t think there is too many managers who could’ve turned Arsenal around like that. Just look at United and Ten Haag, his got all the same problems we had and he doesn’t look like he has a clue how to get united out of it.

@@Samw8484I love it when people say "Emery's team win the FA Cup" because that means that Emery's team also finished 8th in the league. It's the same argument. But yes, if Arteta doesn't bring home any trophies next season then serious questions need to be asked. I also think that will also depend on the season as a whole. I agree he's had a very difficult job changing not only the team, but the culture at the club and all of this done as his first managerial job. But believe me, as a fan I'm definitely expecting some kind of silverware next season, otherwise like I said he will be seriously looked at.

100% agree with you! This year he also say Arsenal will win the league! The best coach is base on vote! Is like Messi won the Ballon d'Or, he still saying Ronaldo is the best! Did Ronaldo won the WC? Man Utd definitely had a better season than Arsenal! No need to debate! You want your team every year finishing second place, or every year winning trophy? I rather my team winning trophy every year! Unless we need to fight for relegation! Simon Jordan always talking sense! But when talking about club from London, he always bias! That's fact!

Why blatantly lie,he never at any point ripped arsenal to win, lets not be silly here@@mickwen4ever188
"Why are trophies no longer the most important marker for measuring a manager and their progress?" Simon actually already answered that. First and foremost, he said they *do* matter, but *context* indeed *also* must be taken into consideration. What has changed is that we *now* know that trophies *help* measure progress, but they're not the *only* measure of progress, *and* that one more cup trophy in *Year 1* (and Year 2) is *not* a good predictor of future *league* trophies! And yes, even the "trophies are most important" crowd often *include* context by saying, "one Premier League title is far more important and prestigious than two League Cups." And yes, as Simon mentioned, *other* contextual factors matter! The quickest and most blatant example, Unai Emery *could* win "more trophies" if - instead of finishing top 4 and going to the Champions League - he finished *outside* the top four and qualified for the Europa League (where his team would be one of the favorites to win that trophy)! If he finished *outside* the top 4 and then *won* the Europa League next year, would he be a *better* manager and be making *more* progress than if he finished in the top 4? Because *that* is the argument that is being made with "trophies are all that matters" and "a trophies is a trophy - ignore all other context!" 😂😂😂😂 Short version: in addition to the fact that it *never* fully was "a trophy is a trophy, forget all other context" (even those making that argument regularly *broke* that rule and *included* context by discussing *which* trophies mattered more), again, the simple fact is that the idea that "trophie measurements *alone* - no other context allowed - are the *only* way to judge the entirety of a team's progress" is completely and horribly *wrong,* and we've *always* known that (and those who didn't are starting to figure it out)!
@akakedi9061

I get it that for medium to small clubs that tend tonbe middle to bottom in the league year in year out, trophies don't matter or indeed winning anything because its staying in the race. For the big clubs, it's about winning trophies. If not what's the yard stick they keep using to compare pep with sir Alex or the big clubs- it's winning trophies. If we use same yardstick they seem to be using downgrading trophies like the FA cup, I would rate the UCL low since a club that came 5th in the league (liverpool) can win it! I’m old. Not old enough to remember Chapman’s Arsenal in the 1930’s and the George Allison takeover when Herb unexpectedly dropped dead of flu/bronchitis or something (this was quite common back then), although my father was. I’ve watched every Arsenal side since about 1970. This is one of the best. The 1971 double winning team were decent but they were just opportunists in a season where there were no standout teams. Then long period of mediocrity. Then late 1980s a resurgence but playing dreadful, negative football which you can’t resist but don’t have to like. George Graham is hardly an Arsenal hero, apart from the moneyanigans his teams were like watching 10 well- drilled full backs. Then another ‘wildnerness years’. Then ‘Arsene Who?’ First full season he conceded the title to Man U at Christmas being 12 pts behind an awesome team. Then Bergkamp remembered he could play, and slowly the lead went, and even with crazy injuries (at one point Wenger brought in an unsigned amateur related to George Weah called Chris Wreh, he scored 3-4 crucial goals on the run-in!) they won title and double etc. More bonkers success followed. My point is, not since the 1930s has Arsenal been a winning machine. They occasionally show what they can do but it’s a treat not an entitlement. Not even under Wenger did we really think we were building to something BIG. Now we’re thinking. It might not happen. But Arteta is actually looking at the possibility and I don’t think any Arsenal boss since Chapman has seriously done this. He hasn’t lifted a thing (early FA Cup I don’t count) but I think he’s looking at the possibility. I personally am not bothered about Arsenal not winning anything yet. Man City are a very very good team and 4 titles on the bounce is quite the thing. But it depends what you have in mind. Nick one, like Klopp, or try to establish a dominance based not on money (and we still don’t know what the City legal matter will amount to) but on sheer football. Of course Guardiola is brilliant. But I’m not seeing new shapes any more. Permanent Revolution is hard, just ask Trotsky. Right now I’m thinking, Timber don’t do another cruciate, just yet, there’s a new pattern there but it requires you I suspect. This isn’t Arsenal attempting to steal a title in an easy year. Arteta is attempting to create a better team than Man City or this year’s version of Real Madrid or someone. He’s just not there yet. But that’s what he’s trying to do.

Arsenal just need to pick up where they left off because there isn’t really much wrong with the team. People will point to the Villa game but it was really the first half of the season that cost Arsenal as they weren’t really in the groove. So if they can start well next season I’m sure they will be running City very close again and might finally get the better of them.
Yet talksport didn't question when they gave Londons manager of the season to Ange Postagoglou earlier in the season.
Maresca shouldn't be so carelessly dismissed. His players speak about him the same way Arteta's do about him. Maresca also worked under Pep at City.
Trophies are still the marker Jim , and the most important is called the premier league trophy
Nahh.. Arsenal will not win the title whilst pep is there. Let's be honest city had 80 percent of its first team out.. Kdb 5 months, halland, 7 weeks, stones, Diaz, ake, foden, akanji, grealish, doku, ederson, rodri, walker, kovacic and still won the title from behind...
Its not even an argument, but as usual when Jordan and Murphy agree its down to whoever's in the middle (in this case White) to listen to the producers and push the other side of the conversation. Especially when very few will agree as it creates content and gets the switchboard lit up. I should even really be writing this as it plays into their hands! But if Jim White really doesn't understand why a 6 game cup run is not as valuable a barometer as a 38 game season, then he shouldn't be working in sports in the first place, but he does understand, which is why he's a presenter and not a Journalist/Broadcaster!

They refuse to strengthen the one position that will get them over the line.
Answer to the question is City, if they go a season trophyless,, I don't think anyone will say they're not outstanding because they would have challenged
Danny slipped up there. It was agreed we are 5 years into project Arteta, then he said ETH and Man Utd are miles off that. Earlier in the episode they said Arteta finished 8th with Arsenal, twice actually. In fact they are both in similar spots. Arsenal were a laughing stock then as Utd are now.
Jim only one making sense
Don’t forget Arteta won the FA cup in his first year, then he had to get rid of a lot of deadwood players at Arsenal that you can only do in transfer windows, then he has to build his own team that again you can only do in transfers windows all this takes time, to turn Arsenal back from finishing outside the top 4 to challenging again is a amazing, first ever managerial job for Arteta and already he’s pushing Pep all the way, top manager, only a matter of time before he starts winning trophies,

No way Arsenal should forget about winning the league anytime soon
I would imagine that Pep leaves if ManC win next season. I'm not so sure Pep leaves if Arsenal win next season. The challenge may stimulate Pep to stay and compete.

Pep leaves once those 115 charges go to court
Pep has won 6 titles in 8 seasons. Why should we all forget his first season at City?
Why is it that every time i see a picture of Saka he's got his tongue stuck out ..We get this on the BBC website as well! Im sure most people dont want to see it 😮. I cant stand the player either, Always pretending to limp ..But virtually never misses a game.
Would you put Roberto Martinez in charge on Man United? Trophies are one part of management. You have to set up to succeed. It's why Jose got sacked.
Imagine what the Spurs and Chelsea fans will say if Arsenal do win the league next season. I guarantee it won't count because they've spent money or because City were distracted by the FFP investigation or Pep's future or they won't have done it in enough style. Even the invincibles drew too many games, you'd have thought the way Spurs and Chelsea fans talk that teams manage unbeaten seasons all the time.

Arsenal have spent as much as City and Liverpool combined in the last 5 years. So if they do ever win a title, it’s perfectly fair to bring that up as context. Everything Pep has ever won has been viewed through that lens so why should Arteta be treated with kid gloves?

@@TP-pq9xx ok so you’re dim, best we stop the conversation here. If you need explaining how a team that had been champions 12 months before compares to a team Arteta picked up in the bottom half of the table you’re not worth my time. You’re too stupid to hold a reasonable conversation.
Arsenal's problem last season was after match week 30 and this season was during the Christmas period. So ,the problem is consistency

They were mostly consistent this year.
On holiday here in Rimini (Italy) at the moment….Gazzetta Della Sport newspaper have Inzaghi favourites with the Italian Bookmakers over here, should Pep decide to hang up his boots…Inzaghi’s contract expires at Inter the exact same day as Pep’s at City next season, so no compensation owed, never crossed my mind this manager but he’s a proven winner with Champions League pedigree too 🤔
How the hell can he be positive about this ,its ridiculous
Arsenal won 3 out of 4 FA Cups towards the end of Wengers time. Although it was great to win the FA Cup multiple times, all this did was paper over the cracks that were obvious. Arsenal fans want to win the league again and get back to the early 2000's and with this current group of players with Arteta, we are very close to doing it and way ahead of the Arsenal teams winning the FA Cups, who were also getting battered to every big 4 team during the in Prem.
Distilling success to winning any trophy is dumbing things down to a whole new level. Arteta won the FA cup in 2020, but would any Arsenal fans want the club to go from this season's "trophy-less team" to the "trophy-winning team" of 2020? fck no!
What has arteta done to jim? He seriously doesn't like him😂

they has their chance and they blew it
Danny Murphy “ten hags second season doubly as bad as the first one” how was the first one bad in any sense of the word?!
Arteta was with pep when he was playing a false number 9,now it seems Arteta can only play with a false number9
Jim white defo had money on arsenal winning the league. He’s fuming 😂
Not a chance, they'll be plagued by injuries, not least to Odegaard and one of their big defenders.

Danny Murphy actually talking facts for once. Man United are in a right state, meanwhile their entire fanbase are focusing on the “we had a more successful season than arsenal” trophy 😂

In the era of Pep and Man City, the soulless, infinite money pit and the grinding inevitability of City coupled with the best manager on the planet in Pep yes, managers have to be judged by other metrics than just winning. Klopp and Liverpool won every trophy there is to win, came within 1 point of winning the league twice (18/19 and 22/23) and is miles ahead of all the other managers besides Pep and even he only won 1 PL title compared to what Pep won so if winning PL titles are all that matters in this conversation we might as well just not have the conversation since Pep will be the winner every year (except the one year Klopp won it). Now that the era of Pep and Klopp is over after next year Arteta and Emery and maybe others will take up the title and maybe more than 2 managers will be able to be talked about
heard all this last season. Come next May you'll be calling the league boring again.
Can Jim seriously not see the difference between success and clear progression in the right direction? Yes ETH won a trophy, but Arteta is positioning Arsenal to have a chance of winning the biggest trophies for years to come. Any team could put all their eggs in the domestic cup basket and win one every now and then, but to be the best team in the league is a different story, and United look about 5 years from being anywhere near that. But at least Jim can sleep easy with his cup
Why is Jim on the show he is totally clueless
Eddie Howe is top dog
I actually believe that neither Arsenal nor City will win the league next season. There's a high turnover of managers among the big clubs...Liverpool, Chelsea (possibly United) so I think there could be a potential shift in the dynamic at the top of the table.
