0:57 I want that tool so bad
Going back to this video, I was very impressed when I first watched this, only to later find out that it was implemented with anti-consumer always-online DRM for even Singleplayer. Not only that but the limitations with the game itself and so many features taken away (at the cost of "complex simulations") just threw this game to an internal waste. I also made a comment saying *"Sim City 5 is going to be AWESOME because it's made by the original creators of Sim City, since EA messed up with Mass Effect 3 and other stuff, I hope EA doesn't ruin this game." INCREDIBLE, I couldn't have been more wrong, what the hell was I thinking believing this game would be good and hoping EA won't ruin it by forcing restrictions and limitations to the game to meet deadlines and their own gains? Damn I was wrong. Good thing Cities: Skylines replaces this game because the original fans love how it gives the original fans (and new fans) exactly what they want. This video just reminds me of how EA loves to only make false impressions. I'm not even going to put "only" in parenthesis because that's how bad they are.
The most underrated game EVER

Is it just me or does this look WAY better than how the game was actually released? What the hell happened during development??? Don't get me wrong I still enjoy playing SimCity and I find it quite soothing but...the simulation wound up being a hot mess and with no explanation as to the fine points of HOW things work a lot of people got super frustrated. I'm STILL finding new things to do and new tricks to employ after all this time so the game isn't as "easy and dumbed down" as it first comes off...
So looking forward to this. Thank you for taking the risk and giving us an early look at the game's progress!
Day 1 purchase for me! Looks amazing, please keep the depth displayed in this video. I heart in-depth sims!
Cannot wait! Was so excited when I got Sim City 4 for Christmas one year
Can't wait to see more of how the GlassBox works! Want to know more about resources.
wow that looks immense, ive played all of the sim city games and i was totally not expecting it to go in this direction, its quite exciting stuff on a technical level tbh.
Why can't we edit our region. Simcity has editing mod own core. I want editing my region. Finel version not like that. This video awsome. It has raising ground and has other smart things. I think new expansion pack bring that things, larger cities and god mode.
So excited, I can't wait. I do have a question for you. With pedestrians/cars/effects, will SimCity be supporting Physx, to add detail/quality?
I played Simcity since I was a kid!Cant wait for this to come out next year!
Thanks for the explanation, I love to know how my games actually work under the hood, thanks again!
Looks epic. Im currently hooked on Sim City 4 so i cant wait to check this one out.
this game had so much potential so did maxis but damnit EA is a money hungry company
Really impressive that you're making everything agent-based. :)
This makes me so excited!! Can't wait!!
This looks amazing, haven't enjoyed simcity since 3000 but this looks awesome!
This look amazing. It's great to see how systems and resources are actual pieces rather then a hypothetical entity.
I liked that when he was talking about agents the car in the left lane made a right turn while the car in the right made a left. Good to know that even in a simcity there are simassholes.
You have to stand back in awe at the wit and humour in this game sometimes.
can't wait for this come out
This sounds so good! Cannot wait! I love complexity!
Can't wait. please take your time to make it perfect.
Simcity4 never gets old. This game, however, will be pure gold.
oh lord it feels like the 90's all over again, can't wait!!!
@gotubeogle If you watch it carefully it says it's not the final graphics, this is just to show the engine.
wow, this looks so awesome, this must be the reason the cities are so small, the tech call only process so many of these units. maybe in a couple years the expansion will ramp this up back to full speed. so cool.
Looking forward to seeing more on the construction phase of buildings....so far it looks more realistic
Looks pretty good so far.
i was never a sims\simcity kinda person but this looks awesome
This is awesome! Can't wait
I must say, since Sim City 4, they have really perfected their game engine. I am impressed, good job. :)
I'm so excited I can't wait!
The agent system looks really fascinating! Still not crazy about the way buildings dangle when you place them (it feels really kiddie/casual), but if the agent thing runs smoothly, I bet it will make for a really neat experience that's definitely SimCity-worthy.
Beautifully coded
Ahh! That's exactly how I was hoping things like Fire stations would be built! Zones, too! I LOVE the way the zones are! *giddy with excitement*
I can't wait for this!
WOW this looks looks incredible..
id love to have had this cool thing in school!
"These demonstrations are all about simulation behavior and not graphics." My dear friend... I find it perfectly fine! You should remember of SimCity 3000... And the lesson given by it.
I doubt we would see in-game graphics soon, as the game has around a year to be released. But I would love to see more of GlassBox videos.
I like the music. Hope it's all orchestrated.
Your picture... and the text. Best match
Simcity 5 !!! Finally, after all this years :,D
Thx for your explanation x)
This is a quote from the recent blog on maxis' web site, "Vehicles will always try and get into the correct lane for the next turn they are required to make. So when turning right, they will attempt to get into the right lane. And when turning left, they will attempt to be in the left lane." They couldn't force cars to be in the correct lanes no doubt otherwise traffic would be an even harder problem to deal with.
Dan, can agents carry more than one type of resource at a time? And in varying quantities? Can different agents can different amounts? Eg, person/car/truck/train carriage
them houses at 2:05 . That makes me mad nostalgic for Sim City 4 man.
@Broden124 They specifily said that "they're not showing off graphics" and there was a note in start saying "NOT final graphics" what part don't you understand?
I hope that's some of the music for the game, I loved the music in SimCity 4. I still listen to it often!
I just keep watching for the music!!
@KrishanuAR No, sadly. They're focussing on PC. Not to say they won't port it to Mac once it has been released and they can concentrate on that.
@ITehCheese At the very beginning it says "Not final graphics."
Awesome that looks so cool
Can hardly wait...
@onox27 no, they're gonna make all the DLCs for that
The game doesn't randomly show cars driving aimlessly, there are actual sims going to work, freight being delivered by freight trucks. Traffic Jams are really caused by too many cars going to work, and are not randomly shown. Agents are also deployed by workplaces to homes to employ sims. Sims send agents to search for a fire station when a fire breaks out. So that's it, agents are instructions for the game to operate. It's the revolutionary Glassbox Engine.
I am liking the soundtrack already!
I like how they are explaining how the game will work.
1:20 Traffic logic in Sim City: The car on the left driveway, goes right.
Can't believe this trailer is half a year old already, seems like yesterday I watched this video...
YEAHH this looks freaking amazing
I'm talking about the art style for these buildings and such. I'm afraid your going to zoom all the way in and see something even more cutesy than typical sims, which are already pretty animated, and the simple style and structure of the buildings strike me as more like an 'avatar' of it's real world counterpart than an immersible experience. But if it supports modding, i'm sure there will be texture packs =D
are all the graphics and things in this game shown as they will be or are they kind of not fully developed yet?
Those who believe in the 2012 crisis think they'll never live to see this game, but I think we will all get to watch this stunning game hit the stores. c:
finally!!!! been waiting 13 years for a new Simcity game that is as good as Simcity 3000.
I hope there will be a way to vary up the gameplay so the majority of people don't always do flat land and square blocks with symmetrical placed buildings.
@beandumper Hahah, that is what I noticed too! Is this Boston? :)
Oh I so cannot wait...
I CAN'T WAIT!!
some mods maybe, but with the always online DRM they are going to put in the game do you think we will get any serious hacks?
Agents carry water along pipes, power along power lines. They tell pedestrians and vehicles where to move. Commuters to work, Freight to commercial areas. Agents are simply instructions for the game to operate. They will be invisible to the players, but the players knows that behind the displays, there is actually something going on. Sims going to work, water pumped along pipes and more.
This is going to be awesome!
Yay soooooo ready 4 this
I love it! If this is the combination of Simcity 2000 with SCURK + Simcity 4 and even has multiplayer it'll be my dream Sim City! Thank you Maxis! (The simulation looks great in terms of detail. Let's see how this pans out gameplaywise... ^^ ) :D
thank you maxis for releasing some more tid-bits......keep it up!
@houstondrakev by sims, do you mean simcity or actual sims?
Can't wait for 2013!!!
That was fixed a couple updates ago. Not sure when you last played, but it should work fine now.
I can't wait!!!
So agents basically remove the need for power lines and water pipes?
yeah we want more of this com'on
I don't like the graphic style and all this sims-like stuff (ground shaking when planting buildings etc). But even if I won't be able to disable it, I just love the fact, that finally someone created a agent-based simulation game. Looks great :)
Very impressive Maxis. We have faith in you.
i hope the maps are bigger... Also in sim city 4 with Regions... it was really cool to see citys connect to one another. however say in Sim city 5 i make a Suburbian Town outside of a city it would be cool to be able to see that city in the background!
Did I watch the same video as some of these other people? He says very clearly in the beginning that the focus of this video is to highlight what's under the hood (it also popped up on the screen), not about the graphics. This game is not out until next year, I am surprised it looks as good as it does now. Regardless, I have been a hardcore Sim City fan since 3000. I will be buying this for sure, even if EA will be sticking its finger in the final product.
looks great. even if it isnt final graphics it is very impressive. the simulation technology looks amazeing
Can't wait :D
It says 19th March, which is actually over half a year ago. Nearly 7 months.
I can't tell you how relieved I am that Maxis is keeping the city-run development of taxed buildings. Cities XL has a few good ideas, but it feels highly restricted by what you can build at a given time, and it gets rather tedious deciding what kind of build to put where for everything, when I'd rather zone and let it happen more naturally! And the props in SC4 were well executed!
Sounds great! :D
this game is going to be EPIC!
the Name GlassBox, is that a reference to the Lem story which inspired the first game?
@BoomWav You already know they will. If they made SWTOR, Mass Effect 3 and BF3 exclusives, you can be sure that SimCity will be an exclusive as well.
Sim City Societies was for a different audience. The new Sim city is basically exactly what you are looking for. this is gonna make it way more complex.
I can't wait!!!!!
2013?!?! can't wait !
Need MOAR!!!
I wish zoning was still like this. It would be nice to see how much space is needed for high density buildings.
