Silverwing Long-Tip: SDS Modeling a Ketchup Bottle (C4D)

MESSAGE:
Somehow tutorials always go longer then anticipated. I don´t know why this is actually 50 Minutes 😅😇
Though I think there are some valuable modeling tips in there! I think if you do, I have to thank you for your time effort and stamina.

    As silly as this may sound I didnt know about the alpha channel on reference image to remove the white part. Then I wasn't used to U~F (fill selection), the radial symmetry, axis positioning on Scale tool or the Patch option on Fill Polygon Hole. I delt with this things but the wrong way. Thank you, really! 🍶I'm off to this weeks vid on glass cause I'm behind.

    One thing to note: While Maxon seems to use the "SDS" term, across the industry "Subd modeling" seems to be a more common naming convention! Might be a helpful term to include in your description or title for better searchability.

    Amazing as always Raph, that's a useful look behind the curtains, this opens doors for the possibility of having timelapse videos related to modeling different objects, when I was doing storyboarding and concept art I used to always watch those speed paintings, it would be similar but with more technical problem solving. I loved how meticulous this tutorial was, you went through a lot in an hour, from addressing support edges to fixing normals. I like how you decided on having a variable thickness for the bottle, for me, my OCD forces me to use M~Z and move it along the normals to keep the thickness consistent then add variety in the material bump channel, have you tried the new Thicken generator? it's like the Solidify modifier in blender. Wish you a productive week and (I'm taking a page from your book) happy modelling 😂🍶

    Hey Zadi, thank you very much for your ongoing support. I really appreciate seeing your comments on my videos ❤️ Yeah I should do more time lapse videos of my work. I could have done that with the Blender project. I just was not sure if I would be able to work without googling how to do this and that in Blender. Great to hear you liked the video. "I loved how meticulous this tutorial was, you went through a lot in an hour, from addressing support edges to fixing normals." If you say it like this, 50 Minutes does not sound to bad to be honest. Still expected it to run under 30 Min when I began ha ha ha. About the Thickness. Usually Bottles get a bit thicker at the bottom. Not as much as with mine. My OCD would kick in when I´d extrude inward and see the horrible geo. I usually do a best of both worlds. I use inner extrude on the parts where it does great. And then I scale in the parts that are problematic (you can use numeric inputs there too to e.g. scale 4mm away from the wall) I have checked the thicken. It does a bit of a better job then Extrude. But still would involve manual cleanup. Anyway. This message, as my video is gotten very long. A productive and creative week and a great time to you too!

    @@SilverwingVFX of course you're welcome, and don't worry about the long comments, feel free to dive as deeper as you want, I enjoy a good discussion the variable thickness I was talking about is between the neck and the body not the base, but I get you, earlier today before I comment I went and tried the thicken generate on a cone to have a cone in it just so I can produce a problem at the tip and make sure the base and sides in this case are consistent, they were, but the tip needed manual fixing as expected, then that went to me playing with caustics in octane and it derailed from there 😂 also you made go and buy a calliper, I never thought about it before I just used measuring tape and math 😂

  • @SilverwingVFX

    @SilverwingVFX

    6 ай бұрын

    @@0zaidi Thanks so much for your answer. Great to hear you are enjoying the conversation. I think there is a checkbox in the thicken tool that makes tries to keep the surfaces parallel. With some glass models I made, I simply avoided making supporting edges before the "thickening". Because those are usually the areas where stuff does not work out. But yeah. I don´t mind doing a bit of touchup on the mesh if it means its controlled thickness. For a second I was thinking about using caustics for my scene too. But I used PT and fake shadows because 1: It´s a modeling tutorial and 2: I would have spent much more time then necessary playing around ha ha ha. And yeah. I have a rather old analog caliper and I love it. Its just such a great and versatile tool. Especially for people like me, that model a lot. Amazing to hear that you own one too now 🙌

    @@SilverwingVFX interesting, i didn't know that check box existed, I'll see the documentation, and let you know if it was capable of fixing the tip issue on a cone and yes the calliper will make my life easier especially when making custom packages and preparing stuff for 3d printing, I don't know how I didn't think of it before, it's rather a cheap and useful tool and yes caustics are just that fun, I added a noise in the bump map and I was mesmerized 😂

    Well, another one who flee on dark side 🤨 However, if you start to make Blender tutorials, I suggest you to don't bother with modeling tutorials. This "market" is already oversaturated. Also, your slow methodic approach to modeling will make Blender fans mad. This tutorial is 40 min. longer than other similar tutorials. I'm serious.... Blender users don't have time to waste 😜 But you can make Octane tutorials. Otoy offer free tier for Blender users. So, there is a lot of people which can be interested. Unfortunately, there is not so many serious tutorials for Blender Octane. C4D and Blende version share same Octane engine, but interface is very different. Also, there are couple small differences. For Blender users following Octane for C4D can be tedious. Focus on complex materials, lighting, tips and tricks.

    Hey hey. Thank you for your long comment. The intent is not to switch but to expand. Learn new things and get out of my comfort zone a little but. About the length of the videos. Let´s see. Maybe there are those that like my style and I therefore have a selling point there. And also yes, I am planning to make Octane tuts for Blender. The scene you see in the video is using Octane to render. Cheers and a great start into the week to you! Raphael
