Silverstreet, SC Thunderbolt 1003 Test - BTS Footage (08/08/20)
Ойын-сауық
BTS (behind-the-scenes) footage shot during today's test in Silverstreet, South Carolina.
The siren that is filmed in this video is a 1962 Federal Sign & Signal Thunderbolt 1003, located at the town's fire station. This video shows us getting our cameras set up, getting up close and personal to the Thunderbolt while it's running, as well as general siren recording shenanigans.

A great video! The old Tbolt girl still got it!! She still sounds great!!!
3:49 Siren starts
This thing went off 3 times in one week for fire calls. I went back in November, sounded better than in this video but solenoid is still broken.
Nice BTS!

Nice going You should make a whole BTS
is that a 5m blower
When the siren gets refurbeshed and I get a chance to see the siren, I too will get myself a brick from the fire station.

Have you seen me on that yellow ATV at the fire department
Are you all to be at the fire department today
What bothers me about this siren (and frankly most of the sick Thunderbolts out there) is that it is literally in 75% working order. The blower and rotator are both running smoothly, and the chopper is at least still spinning. Literally all it needs is a new solenoid and a new set of brushes, and possibly new bearings as well. It’s such a cheap and easy fix (and there’s a certain siren enthusiast who lives not too far from there who I’m sure would be happy to repair it), yet the people who maintain the siren won’t budge

The blower is fine. It’s a 5M model, so it sounds different from the standard 4M models that you’re probably used to hearing

This ones blower situation is a special case. I also noticed that it sounds odd. This is because the solenoids block out a lot of air that is supposed to escape from the chopper, so the pressure buildup causes the pressure relief valve to open up. With both solenoids working, you'd hear a constant sound of air escaping, but since one is inoperative, you hear a cool combo of the blower sound and air escaping

Thunderbolts can easily run for up to 10 years with brush/collector ring issues. As long as the chopper motor is getting some sort of an electrical connection, it will just keep running
