*IMPORTANT UPDATE 05/28/2023: This siren was removed and was taken to the repair shop for repairs to the siren. The chopper motor is dead. County plans to reinstall this siren by spring 2024. I repeat, this siren will be reinstalled and put back in service next year.* Distance recording of this in attack and hi-lo: • Distance Recording: Th...
Shot on March 9, 2016. This is a video of this siren sounding 3 minute attack ("take cover") and 3 minute hi-lo (fire signal) for the 2016 South Carolina statewide tornado drill at 9:00am ET. I apologize for the scanner signal issue. I had trouble getting the signal.
I know there's no start up (and sorry for the video shakiness) on the second test (hi-lo), that second test was completely unexpected. A few minutes later after the first test, this siren went off in hi-lo during I was taking down the cameras. The camera started recording around 10 seconds after this siren started up again. At first I thought this siren's going off for the fire call, but I was told by the county it was part of the test.
This siren hasn't ran in attack in 2 years. The attack signal was so awesome to my ears! This siren is normally tested every Saturday at 12:00 PM ET in 3 minute of hi-lo (fire signal). The attack signal ("take cover") is normally tested on every SC statewide tornado drill. This siren is a 3 phase model (1003A). This siren is part of the Newberry County siren system. This siren is one of the famous Thunderbolt 1003s on KZread. This siren is located in Silverstreet, South Carolina at Silverstreet Fire Department and EMS station off of Main Street (34).

Sounds fantastic! They better not replace this one, if anything they should restore it!

Here in NYC we don't have sirens anymore, most of the sirens that were put up post 1990s have all been taken down. However the only siren that survived is a thunderbolt 1003 that's in a airport. I believe it's in LaGuardia. Obvisually it's no longer used, things been silent for 20 years.

i like the sound though the attack is random timing for wind up and wind down and wow that thunderbolt looks like it was hit by a tornado

They should never replace it but maybe just fix the painting and everything else

Even though it may need to be repainted a bit (I noticed that most of the paint either dissolved, rusted off or chipped off) it still works like a charm! I am still shocked that this siren survived a Hurricane!

Sweet!! I have always wanted to hear this one run in either alert or attack since you first recorded it, glad to finally hear it do just that! Sounds really good too, much better than it has in the past (before it was repaired). Now if only the one in downtown Newberry would go off in hi-lo for the drill one year, that would be completely epic. Speaking of that one, I wonder if it worked right this time around after its little malfunction during the last drill. I sure hope so since I would hate to see it either be put out of service or replaced just because the delay relay in the RCM got hung up.

Great video! I always love hearing a healthy 1003 in either attack or hi lo.

On the pole nearby... Those are folded dipole antennas and it appears that there are about 3-4 of them, aimed in various directions for coverage and fed/wired in phase to provide gain. It is likely an antenna configuration for a VHF repeater, for public service (fire/EMS).

At one point it sounds like it's a complete, steady tone from the echo. Pretty cool!

Back in the days of civil defense, the sound of a thunderbolt in attack meant two things. 1. You’re screwed, or 2. You’re fucked.

It sounds like there's 15 right there because of the echo. I love it so much!!!
