Silverholder LED light strip install to daytime running lights on 2023 Hyundai Elantra CN7.

JAN 10 2023 UPDATE::
The strip has started to malfunction. It has developed a dark yellow spot near the power side about 6 inches down and the entire strip has started to flicker. I've removed it for now, and sent an email to the company that sells it to see if they will stand behind their warranty. Stay tuned.
• Silverholder LED light...
** Disclaimer ** Do not attempt this unless you have a decent understanding of how vehicle electrical systems work. Also, you will be tapping factory wires so this may impact any warranty claims related to the headlight asssembly. You have been forewarned!
For this installation, I wanted the strip to power on with the stock DRL and remain off if the parking brake was engaged. To achieve this, I needed to tap both the DRL power wire and the headlamp power wire at the driver side harness. The DRL wire is green with a black line, all by itelf on a row of 5 terminals. The grey wire is the headlight. A diode is attached to each of these wires to prevent backfeeding 12v back to the DRL from the headlight and vice versa (note: the DRL turns off when you activate the left turn signal, so this will shut off your strip if your lights are off. To prevent this you can tap the passenger side DRL wire using a third diode, thus giving your relay coil three power sources. The relay is neccesary because for some reason, the grey headlamp wire doesn't provide enough power to light up the strip (I know, its weird) The coil of the realy is powered from the diode-protected wire tapped sources, and the switch end of the relay is connected to the car battery. I was going to use a fuse tap in the engine fuse compartment but the one I bought didn't fit.

    With this model of Elantra, the DRL voltage is 50% when the headlight are ON and 100% when they are off. The diodes on each "power source" prevents the drl power line from powering the headlight and vice versa.

    To my knowledge there is no such fuse under the hood you can tap, but using a multimeter you could probably find one that is powered when the car is running. I wanted these to work in concert with the existing DRL but everyone has their own way of installing things.

    i have a 2023 elantra sel and i just bought this and installed it today but its daytime and i dont know if it is installed right because the top of the hood has like bumps so it had to go farther back idk if its close enough to the edge to even show the light i dont think the hood would be able to close though if i put it closer to the edge and it probably wouldnt stick right because of the bumps and everything.

    Yeah, I got mine as close to the edge as I could but to your point the rolled steel edge makes it tricky. I hope yours lasts longer than the 6 weeks mine did before LEDs started to blow. I've noticed others in my neighbourhood with the same issue.

    How long does this hood light strip last? Does your light strip only come on when your head lights come on at night? I don't want my light strip to come on when I start up the car, then it's running all day. I want it to only come on when my lights automatically come on at night. My daytime running lights stay on all day. I want the hood strip light to only come on when my lights automatically come on at night

    The strip died in less than two months and I had to remove it. No response from the seller. That aside, if you only want the strip coming on with the headlights than you can tap only the gray wire at the headlight harness. The relay 'may' not be needed but it is my personal preference not to run additional electrical loads on stock wiring.

    Hi what if I just tap the green cable of drl(power wire) ? I just want the strip to light up when I unlock my car and if it shuts off later on that is fine with me. I couldnt find any existing fuse too to accomplish that purpose. Do you have any expert advice for the same. I own elantra 2021 so your video was very helpful but I do not wnt diodes complication as I am amateur in this stuff tbh.

  • @NighthawkMcKenzie

    I couldn't find a fuse that is specific to the DRL lamps on their own (it was the first thing I tried!) If the 2021 is wired the same as my 2023 (and it likely is) the DRL lamps are on full power until your headlights come on, then they dim to 50%. The DRL lamps also turn OFF when you activate the turn signal. If you tap only the green wire on the driver side, the strip will be on when the car is turned on, started and running but will shut off when the left turn signal is on (during the day) and possible behave poorly when the headlights are on as it is getting only 50% power. In my experiments, the 50% power from the DRL wire wasn't enough to charge the relay and keep the strip on. This is why I had to also tap the headlight wire and use diodes to prevent back feeding. As for getting the strip to come on only when you unlock the car??? That sounds like tapping the power unlock wire and using a microprocessor solution to keep power to the strip for 10 seconds after the signal is received. That one is outside my experience.

    A fuse/tap would be enough if you wanted the strip powered all the time. For example, when you have your headlights set to OFF and the EBrake set, the car can run with all the DRL lights off. I wanted the strip to follow this behaviour.

    If you haven't bought this strip yet, I suggest you don't. It failed within two months and I have since removed it. The company never responded to my request for a replacement or refund. The strip is fed through the rubber bumpers for the hood, other than that is is just adhered to the hood lip using the supplied double sided tape. There is no seal. When the hood is closed, the light is visible through the gap between the facia and the hood.
