Silverado 6L80 Thermostat Delete the Right Way! *SURE-COOL*

Update to this Video there is now a GM option available for the 6L80. Both seem to work the same.
The SURE-COOL is a must-have for the 14+ 6L80 and 6L90 transmission. From the factory, they have a cooler thermostat that doesn't open until 190F. The sure cool allows cooler flow at all times. This is a beginner-level upgrade and well worth the money!
Transmission bypass flow kit - amzn.to/3sUz8Ju
-Built-in safety bypass
-Immediate cooler fill
-Immediate accurate fluid level check without warm-up cycle
-Reduced average operating temperatures by as much as 20%
-Reduced risk of overheating while under load, Increased ATF life.

Just gonna throw in a comment, this summer it was getting to 100-110 in Texas. On longer drives I was sitting between 170-180 with it maybe going to 190 if I would get stuck in traffic. I just went back to these because we experienced our first cooler days of 60 and it was taking a while for it to get over 100 but after about 20 minutes I am sitting at 130. This does work great if installed properly!

  • @fishman80

yeah it’s dictated based off of the ambient temperature outside. So if it’s really hot outside, you’re still gonna be on the 180 range which is fine. The key is you have fluid flow constantly now.

Bucks when you first put it in D of a morning. Searches for 3-4 or 4-5. Im biting the bullet and replacing everything. New torque, lines, cooler and a Jasper rebuild. No chance for that old fluid getting into system. Its a Hell of an expense but I hope it will keep the truck going another 150000. Thanks for the video.

@@sbc_jake_9677 , I heard from a YT video someone saying that the reason the original thermal bypass valve was designed to open for cooling at 194 °F (or 90 °C) is due to Federal Government regulations to get higher mpg. The hotter the fluid is the thinner it gets, which would enable higher mpg. However, I think GM failed in providing a transmission fluid cooler coil that’s capable of sufficiently cooling the fluid for city stop and go driving as well as towing something (highway driving is ok - doesn’t overheat, because of cooling air with speed). Also, it appears that over time, the thermal bypass internal gets clogged up a bit with fluid gunk or deteriorating components rendering it to operate inefficient that leads to creeping up higher temperatures.

I can't believe this either. Ive blown 3 torque converters and had my transmission rebuilt 3 times under warranty within 2000 miles of each other and by doing my research this is the product that I think is going to be a savior. the common denominator of each failure was long trip and by my house in southern ca we have a toll road hill that is long and pretty big and it takes my torque converter out and I believe the fluid is just way to hot.

Now after installing this kit my trans runs between 158 to 175 regularly!!!!!!!!! I’ve never got my temps down to the 145 range but I do plan on putting in an auxiliary oil cooler also. Normal driving conditions, it’s my daily driver and never abused, outside temps in my state have been in the triple range for going on 3 weeks now and it still runs loads cooler. I always recommend doing more research. But trust me you do not want high temps in these transmissions. I have been a tech for over 15 years now and GM tech for most of it. The only reason they are allowing these transmission to get so hot is for fuel economy. Just so they can add that extra and make it look good. I would rather have my transmission properly cooled and lose a small amount of fuel economy. So little you will not even notice.

Basically it allows flow through the cooler at all times. It has a soft spring that eliminates back flow and then the check ball is for cold weather if the cooler is frozen and can’t flow the fluid will feed right back to the transmission.

Nice upgrade! Your video title should really not have the the words "Thermostat Delete" though, since you are actually doing a Thermostat Upgrade. Your statement about not having to warm up the transmission to check the fluid level may not be correct, because you still have a thermostat installed, so the fluid temperature will still need to be above the installed thermostat rating before it opens and allows fluid flow through transmission cooler.

The new TBV opens up at 70 C / 158 F, which would keep the engine around 165 F in warmer temps and closer to 158 F in colder temps. I'm planning on getting the new GM TBV because I don't want to void my warranty plus the installing the new TBV on 2016 - 2020 Suburban is super easy. I heard from a YT video someone saying that the reason the original thermal bypass valve was designed to open for cooling at 194 °F (or 90 °C) is due to Federal Government regulations to get higher mpg.
