When is was in my early 20s, I work as a deckhand on party boats out of Belmar N.J. Whiting was a great fishery. Customers would fish a 6 hook rig and catch burlap bags of them. Good times, you could deckhand on a boat 9-10 months out of the year.

I've caught them in January in the past. I usually stop fishing for them in February only because of the cold, but I imagine they are still around.

Used to get Whiting off the beach n jetties at night in NJ but the comm. netters wiped them out :-( be well.

We still get Ling where I'm at but usually only a night time bite.

@@davedeefishing , They would wash up on the beach with a N.E. wind during the day but fishing for them started After Dark... Party boats out of Belmar, NJ would anchor up in just 15' of water just past the tips of the jetties at night.... MB.

I live in Fall River Ma, originally from Tiverton RI. My dad and uncles would tell stories about catching tons of frost fish. But by the time I was born, 50 years ago, they seemed to have left the area. I would go several nights every year in search of them and never seen a single one. Have they just simply moved a little further north? Have you heard of anyone catching them in Tiverton or Fall River?

People catch them in Newport by accident now thru mid winter.

sorry, I know marine fisheries differentiates populations of silver hake between gulf of Maine and south of the cape. The population north of the cape is very strong and southward not so much because of the commercial fishery. I know people catch them in Newport by accident while fishing for squid.

Do you think a Squid light would work, one of those LED green light ones that go in the water column. This seems so much easier than lugging a generator and light around. I have a lithium-ion battery and a green low amp draw underwater LED light for squid fishing.

Should work. Any light that attracts baitfish will be fine.

Have you been out since, ever try around now. Would like to take a shot b4 it get to warm water Temps in the low 40s. Will that work?
