I never thought to use a spoon. Is it the soapy water that makes that work well?

Hi Dan. Yes it's the soapy water ! I wet the spoon and the surfaces that way the excess sealant wont stick back down. The professionals here use wood dowels of different diameters that have the working end cut at acute angles. These are left soaking in soapy water. Different diameters give different bead sizes. A spoon works for me though 😊
