Sigma EF 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

The Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is an excellent choice for astro, travel, landscape, and video! Canon's RF 35mm macro was feeling a little too tight, so I'm rocking a 28mm for now.

    24mm, 28mm, or 35mm? Why?

I had previously eyed the Sigma 28 to replace my RF35, which I too feel is a bit too tight for some situations, but the weight and size with the adapter added is a bit much for my taste and use case.

@@philipphill9518 Really my only issue with the Canon ecosystem is that we're seemingly still a long way from having many exciting options. For example, one lens that might be an interesting choice for us would be the Tamron 20-40 f2.8. If it we me and that were available without an adapter, I might trade a bit of light for the added versatility and smaller size.

The RF 15-35 F2.8 is almost mandatory for Canon shooters. It’s such a convenient lens and covers so many different photo disciplines. Why buy 24,28, and 35, when you can get this one lens? Same goes for the 24-70 F2.8. If you price up having multiple lenses, it makes so much sense. Good to see you still coming out with bangers!

I definitely haven't ruled it out forever. I originally went with the 14/35 combo because I could get both for about half of what the 15-35 cost. Now that I'm more in a refinement phase for my bag, I place a lot more value in having both options in one lens... but still not quite enough to pull the trigger on the 15-35 😅

@@DanYosua I’m surprised you haven’t reviewed it yet. I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, and for some reason I thought you already reviewed the 15-35 lol. For a lot of the work you do it might be up your ally, except for the hockey/sports photography. The cost of the RF system sucks and the lack of third party options is disappointing. The great thing about the RF system, is how sharp and professional the lenses are, especially the L series. With lenses like the 15-35, I don’t have to worry about the gear, I just focus on the shot. Don’t get me wrong, you can get the same level of quality with something cheaper and editing software, but what’s that time worth to you?

I've been dying to, hopefully this year. I also really want to try the 14-35 out of curiosity. I really scaled back the freelance work after I took a job in 2022 and broke my leg - it just got too difficult to do it all including rehab after last spring. So I'm totally with ya on the mentality - if I can save time on the actual work or improve the product, I'm a big believer in investing there. But for the moment, the hockey stuff is for fun and I don't have a ton of bandwidth for side photo work. If I were to pick a bunch of those hours back up, the 15-35 starts to look like a no-brainer as I would prefer the zoom for paid stuff.

I think that one will be generally pretty popular, but still wish they had a mid tier option. Something weather sealed with a bit better edge to edge image quality for ~$999.

Bought this lens "new" (its new but not covered by warranty) on Amazon for less than what people were selling for on Facebook Marketplace. Its absolutely deadly sharp. Such a good lens. My mount is a E and its huge but worth it. Love this lens.

Thanks for the comment, that sounds like a great pickup! It's one of those lenses that exemplifies the pros and cons of the RF mount right now - EF stuff still works really, really well adapted... but the native 3rd party ecosystem is still dead all these years in.

I really enjoy watching your videos, especially because I have similar wants and needs, with macro (EF100L) and wildlife (RF100-400) being more of a priority for me though. I hope my next purchase for travel photos (RF24-105L) will quell the inner gear acquisition monologue for some time. This, in combination with a fast prime (RF50), should cover most of my bases when traveling and everyday shooting.

Pairing either of the 24-105's with a fast prime in the middle should have you feeling much more prepared if nothing else.

Wish more sigma lenses had IS built-in. My lenses have to pull double duty for photo and video and lens IS is a must for when using R5C. Also, Canon sucks for blocking 3rd party lenses AND not filling out their own lineup faster. I would love that Tamron 35-150.

  • @DanYosua

Ahh yeah I can imagine, I forget about the R5C when thinking through some of these things, but that does limit your options even a bit more. For someone who is finally feeling pretty settled with my entire kit a few years into photography, I'm disappointed with Canon's current options. I feel like they really left a massive gap in the middle with no urgency to fill it out.

My kit is around the R6 + 28-70 F2 (here in Switzerland around 2500euro brand new VS 2100euro for 24-70 2.8). I don't know why so less difference between the two only here. I sold my 24-70 2.8 and 24-105 STM zoomkit. But for travel it is too big and heavy and pricey to carry. I was considering the sigma 24 1.4 for everything and daily usage (i have the rf 16 and 50 very small ones with me most of the time), and even the ef 24mm 1.4L mark ii second hand. But finally I'm waiting the rf 28mm 2.8 true pancake.... And only for the form factor, and also cheaper than the sigma 24... I kept the RP and i think i can put RP+28 pancake in my poket

Thanks for taking the time to comment! It's interesting to hear from 28-70 owners and what you use in circumstances where the 28-70 stays behind. It's rare that I'm able do this given that the channel is still pretty small, but I was able to place a preorder for the 28mm pancake with the channel earnings from the last few months. Not sure if I'll keep it for all the reasons I like this Sigma (weather sealed, image quality, etc.). BUT, I'm really excited to take the battery grip off, pop on the pancake, and carry it around everywhere for a long term test. I miss carrying the the RP + nifty around everywhere... and it sounds like that RP + 28 combo will be a great everyday carry for you.

@rivergate950 it might not be next year, but I think some lenses sorta fall into that ~5yr cycle. In Canon’s case, to your point, they’re great. So I’d expect them just to marginally slim down the form factor, probably keep the original msrps, and let the mark i’s have the consistent markdowns. And given their most recent designs, probably reasonable to expect those function buttons on L lenses moving forward? But just guesses.
