I use a 28mm f/1.4E - 58mm f/1.4G - 105mm f/1.4E combo and it ROCKS!! This is my favorite lens lineup EVER. I especially love the 28mm for portrait shots when I want to capture a subject in their environment, at normal distances I’ve noticed the effects of perspective don’t distort faces noticeably. Using a 24mm in the same scenario resulted in a tad too much perspective distortion for my taste.

It works fantastic with the 58mm and 105mm, although the 28mm and 105mm are probably more evenly compared as the 58mm is not built for sharpness (but still produces magic). 28mm lenses are not recognized as much as 24mm and 35mm lenses obviously. This is really a pity as 28mm is the most used focal length today using your iPhone, which default focal length is 28mm. Nikon has a long legacy of producing amazing 28mm lenses, which is a hidden treasure to most photographers. For example, the legendary classic 28mm f/2.8 AI-s lens, which was the first SLR lens I purchased over 20 years ago still is available brand new from Nikon by special order. It’s an amazing lens, still today! Then we have the almost mythical 28mm f/1.4D, which from I understand is the ultimate of all! Using the lenses quite often. The 28 1.4E has bad chromatic aberration, taking a bit work in post. Otherwise, the lens is of course very good. Not cost-effective as for its price one could also get 24-70 2.8. Or two times the 24-120. Still using the 28 1.4 a lot, getting results. @@russandloz I took portraits (which include a lot of environment) also stopped down. Having a lot of chromatic aberration is my main gripe with this lens as it means to spend more time in post. The other stuff, distortion, heinous light falloff towards the corners wide open, the compromized close-focus performance unless stopping down quite a bit, is all forgiven because if used right, the images have this, how do I call it, this look. Sharp (in the center) but graceful, unnecessary good bokeh if you need it, very good contrast. Colors might be a tad too cool for my taste but this can be addressed in post. Images have an almost 3-dimensional look. Backlight is handled very well. And if stopped down further, sunstars are excellent. It does need quite a bit of practice to use this lens right but when I manage, the nuance I get, the options I have, all that allows me to tell my story in photographs.

@@russandloz Exactly Russ and Loz! Bingo for mentioning the Leica 28 as it is also amazing. I have a friend who is a Lieca shooter, and swears by it.I have never used the Leica as I simply don't dare as Mrs. would probably strangle me if I purchased a bunch of Leica gear! The Zeiss Otus 28 f/1.4 has no competition in my humble opinion and is in a class of its own, but it is manual focus only. The Nikon 28mm f/1.4 E is probably 95% as good, but it is auto-focus, which is important so some of us obviously.

Take a photo of a something with lots of texture like a carpet, then use photoshop tool Find Edges, then all it leaves is whats in focus and sharp.
Wow. This one looks like best lens for situations other than wildlife and sport. Now hunts begin.
I kind of fell in love with the 28mm focal length and was struggling to make up my mind to justify the damage of this hidden treasure, till I tried the Sigma 28/1.4 art, which is a more modern optical design, flawless AF, matching IQ to the Nikon 28/1.4E and for one third of the price. Wondering if you considered that and if not, why.
Ironic that this video came out about half an hour after I'd ordered the 35 1.8 :D
Interesting, I never even knew this lens existed It has piqued my interest already. Anything between 14mm to 35mm is particularly interesting for me, and within the 20mm to 30mm both 20mm and 28mm happen to be my favorites in the range. I just checked where I can get one, and it seems Amazon is the only place where I can order one here for around $1,700. While not cheap, it's definitely worth the price based on your tests.

Yes. That’s what I paid. It’s a perfect combination of sharpness and character sometimes missing from modern glass
Once the Z 35 1.2 comes out, it would be an interesting comparison. Im trying to hold out until its here and reviewed, with my backup plan to buy the 28 1.4E if the Z 35 1.2 doesn't have enough "character". Would also like to see how the 28 1.4E compares against the Tamron 35mm 1.4 as a budget alternative.

@@russandloz Follow up comment, I got the Tamron 35 1.8 VC (cheap 2nd hand), really good 0.4x macro close up bonus feature, good VC but i never was happy enough with images/focus on D800 (focus was great on Z6 II but too long/front heavy with FTZ, and to use TAP IN would require a manufacturer/fixation free firmware update). Sold 1.8 and got Tamron 35 1.4, absolutely stunning! still want Nikon 28mm 1.4E but this was a good compromise and much cheaper.
Do clients notice the sharpness difference between the 35mm f/1.8S and 28mm f/1.4E?

I seriously think that if Nikon makes an f-mount retro mirrorless a lot of Nikon users would be waiting at the shop to open. The f mount lenses are still very relevant. You’d have the benefit of not having to use an adapter so things will be smaller and with today’s technology the thing would just be so awesome. Would you buy one?

@@russandloz getting those was influcenced by lenses I already have. If creating an F-mount line-up from scratch I probably go with 24 or 35 1.4, and 58 1.4. But I got what I got.
