    I’ve just picked up one of these on EBay for £425. Really interesting to watch your review. It confirms everything I’ve noticed. I’ve used it with a Canon 5D Mkiii and a Canon 7D Mki. I was disappointed with the results from the 7D and now I understand why. Thanks for such a detailed review.

    Question: why would the pictures be worse on a cropped sensor? Doesn't that crop to the sharper center area of the lens?

  • @skaterdude1998
    @skaterdude19989 жыл бұрын

    While super telephotos are always sharper on full frame when compared to APS-C, if you have to crop anyways (for something like wildlife), the extra pixel density of APS-C sensors generally makes them the winner. Let's say you're shooting wildlife with a 7D and you don't have to crop due to the 1.6x longer focal length. However, on a full frame camera, you do have to crop. The full frame camera would have to be, in theory, 46mp to have the same level of detail (1.6^2 * 18(mp)). Of course if you don't have to crop on the full frame the image quality will be much better.

    You are mistakenly thinking that the focal length of the lens changes when it is fitted to an APS-C camera body. The focal length stays the same - i.e. in this case 50-500mm. What does change is the field of view, which is a cropped version of what you see on a full frame camera using the same lens. The actual size of the subject is the same on both camera sensors with the same lens fitted to either camera. Full frame sensor cameras offer more than a cropped sensor in other areas though....less noise at higher ISO's, shallower depth of field for the same aperture and better dynamic range. It's why some people prefer full frame cameras. Most enthusiast FF cameras have increased their MP's now as well...the Canon 5D MK IV has 30MP, the Sony A7R III has 42.2 and the Nikon D850 has 45.4MP's. Subsequently cropping down from one of those cameras can yield acceptable images comparable to using a larger focal length lens without the cost and the weight.

    "...it worked quite accurately in my tests..." Given the AF issues their 18-35mm f1.8 Art lens is having, especially on the Pentax mount, this is good to know. I think a dedicated travelling photo enthusiast who wants a two-lens kit to do everything might go for this one (they'll want something for under 50mm), but those lenses which do between 18mm at the short end and between 250mm and 300mm at the long end still seem IMO to have an edge for their relative portability. If all else fails, you can always put a 2X teleconverter behind one of those and crank up the ISO (which I know not everybody necessarily wants to do or can do, depending on their camera). I can live with the results that would produce. All that being said, if money were no object and they turned this out in a K mount, I would seriously consider buying it.

  • @christopherfrost

    @christopherfrost

    9 жыл бұрын

    No problem! Well, lenses tend to get sharper when you stop down their aperture. The best lenses start out sharp when the aperture is wide open - so, that's what my tests are looking for. Lenses tend to get brighter in the edges when you stop the aperture down, because of vignetting

  • @Ensign_Cthulhu

    @Ensign_Cthulhu

    I wondered the same thing, but he's answered the question well; it's a matter of uniform brightness across the field with a correct exposure, rather than absolute brightness coming through the lens.

    if you could reccommend the "most" sharp for aps c sensor in that focal length, what would it be? what about the sigma 150-500? and i actually also thought about just adding that expander (excuse me i forgot its name). and btw, the canon 300mm prime (its is f4 is) and adding the 1.4 expander which will make it 400mm 5.6L with is (and much cheaper though) it will be a good idea? thanks for answering Christopher :)

    Amit H I haven't really used enough super telephoto lenses to make a judgement call. The sharpest 400mm lens I've used on a Canon APS-C camera is the Canon 400mm f/5.6 USM 'L' - that is definitely quite good. I haven't stumbled across anything sharper than that so far. The Canon 300mm f/4 will not be very sharp with an extender, I'm afraid - it's only reasonably sharp at f/4 (although it is very nice from f/5.6)

    Christopher Frost Photography Hi Matt Chris is right. For variable aperture 4.5 to 6.5 tele lenses you always lose out at maximum focal length for sharpness. Physics just takes it toll. So the Sigma 50-500mm and Tamron 150-600 represent great bang for your buck for a tele lens under 2000 dollars. Nikon has some quite sharp DX lenses such as the Nikon 28-300mm. Perhaps you should consider this one. Some of the sharpest zooms for example are 400 f4 and 600mm f4 (I think) primes from Nikon. . These will set you back up to 6000 dollars or over and a HUGE. Always get as close to your subject as possible anyway regardless of your zoom. I plan on buying the Sigma 50-500mm at some point in the future.
