The 10 Sharpest Lenses I've Ever Tested: 2017

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A lot has happened in the world of optics the past two years. I've recently been reviewing some unimaginably sharp, new lens, and this list was in need of a serious update for 2017: so here we are.
These are:
1) Full-frame lenses I've tested (and I mostly test on Canon gear, so sorry, but no Nikon, Sony etc.)...
2) ...which cost under £1,000 GBP (approx. $1,300 US)
I'm sure this list will be nice and controversial and I'll get all kinds of accusations of bias here and there and everywhere! But these are simply based on the test results I've managed to get from each lens. Hope you enjoy - let me know if there are any amazingly sharp lenses I've missed below.
FAQs:
Q) Why is the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 'ART' listed as being under £1,000? A) It can be found on the grey market for under £1,000, and as a new lens it will come down in price a little, soon (I think)
Q) Why has the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM suddenly made an appearance? A) Because previously I'd never tested it on full-frame to see just how sharp it really is

Great charts! I bought the Samyang 135 and I can confirm that this lens is incredible sharp. It's now my absolutely favorite lens. On my EOS 6D the manual focussing in Live View Mode is with Magic Lantern very easely. Focus Peaking with an sensitiv treshold and grayscal image "on" and you nail the focus in 80 - 90 % of your images.

I realised that there is much more when watching your videos. The way you portray your words is very interesting. And your images are amazing as well. I only have 1 of my 3 making the list: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L. My other Canon lens 24-70mm f/4 L I'm not largely impressed with. It is good, but not great and for that kind of cash I could buy the Sigma. What the Canon 24-70mm has over the Sigma is 'IS' and that feature is worth some gold especially when I used the setup for video. If the Sigma version had 'IS', my Canon would be on Ebay right now.

Chris I gotta say when I first entered the world of photography and videography it was a harsh grey area for me when it came to technical decisions. However I stuck with it as a self taught student because classes were just out of budget. I can't say that I'm a "professional" yet, but you have helped me with so many aspects of not just choosing a lens. But actually seeing how lenses work and how they work better and why. Ed Wagoner Sr. , I doubt that there is the whole ten APS-C specific lenses worth the title in existence. Usually the full-frame lenses are of a better quality, so basically, if you shot APS-C, you need only a short focus distance lens to get your wide angle covered, and for the rest a full-frame glass will be a better investment.

I always enjoy your comprehensive videos and look forward to them. This time however, I have a problem agreeing with your assessment of sharpness on most of your tested lenses. Unless my monitor is quitting on me, I do not see the sharpness as you do. In fact, when I watch other videos that are testing Nikon Lenses, they appear much sharper. Although I am relaxing my stand toward third party lenses, they still do not compare in quality as the first party manufacturers, and they do not last as long either. I have Canon equipment and I am quite pleased with the quality, versatility and ruggedness I have learned to expect. Again, thanks so much for your hard work. Tony

Mr. Ignacio obviously doesn't have any idea what he is taking about. There is no "Canon FX". Honestly some people need to take a chill pill. I watched the entire video and you tested a fairly wide variety of lenses. Of the none Canon lenses my gut tells me most of them can be purchased with Nikon mounts, Olympus mounts, Sony mounts, etc. Which, ultimately means by the hater logic you should title the video "The 10 Sharpest Lenses I've Ever Tested: 2017 (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus)." In reality, there are adapters that will allow you to use Canon lenses on a Sony, on a Nikon, not sure about the Olympus, but you get the idea. Sounds like someone lacks the capacity to listen to your fairly complete detailing of how and what you used to conduct your tests. But they obviously rather blame you than themselves.

Great video as always. Can you please review the Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro? Although some have reviewed it and gave it great reviews as both Macro and Portrait BUT still I think it has to be reviewed by you since you are one of the best in lens review. Thanks.

Thanks for the reveal about the loss of sharpness on the sigma 85 when on aps-c as compared to the samyang. As my friends and I borrow each other's lenses, (I'm full frame and they're mostly aps-c) this will help factor into what lens we split price on. It's incredible they're both the same price too.

I love my Sigma 35mm. It lives on my Canon and rents the space on occasion. The 14 mm Samyang is equally impressive for wide angle architectural shots and its 85 mm sibling is tack sharp as you've said. I've yet to decide on the newer XP series and will probably pick up the Sigma 85 mm along with Sigma 12-24mm because there are times I wish I didn't have to fumble with manual focusing. That said, I rarely use zoom lens anymore. My goto lens apart from aforementioned, are the Canon 100 mm Macro and Canon 135 mm. Great review as always Chris. I appreciate the fact that you take the time to objectively report the value of third party lens as they are getting really good and exceeding the more expensive Canon or Nikon lens. Cheers!

I'm happy to see that the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS made it on to the list. I own it and got at a very good price on Black Friday last year. Very nice lens. I use it on my Canon eos 80D - which makes it work like a 112-320mm when factoring the 1.6 crop factor in.

Hi Christopher, thank you for this video. I purchased the Canon EF 4.0/70-200mm L IS USM lens and it delivered very sharp and brillant photos on a Canon APS-C camera I once had and now on my Canon 6D (a camera I also recommend). Now with an adapter I've attached it on a Olympus PEN E-P5 uFT camera. This adapter aroused my curiosity, because the lens has the effect of a FF 140-400mm telephoto zoom. On saturday or sunday I'll test that combination thoroughly. Best, Magnetron

Thanks, very useful.I was just watching your other similar lens list videos and wondered when you were going to do another. Interesting to see the 40mm on this, but it is a good lens and for sharpness, I'd rather have it over the 50mm f/1.8 which I have. Looking forward to seeing your review of the Canon 100-400mm L II. I have seen some very sharp images of birds taken with it, but at its price I would expect it to be very sharp. At some point if you can get it, could you review the Laowa 24mm f/14 macro lens? I have never seen a lens like it and wondered what you would think of it. The dark f/14 aperture might be an issue. I haven't yet seen it available to buy yet though. If not, could you review some more macro lenses?

You do it very unbiased and whoever's fan might be happy or annoyed, the truth is that if people pay attention to what you said, they can save a lot money when getting identical or much better result, when compare to strong ads out there. Samyang 85 1.2 is officially on my list now.Well done and keep up with your excellent reviews. Please make sure your remain yourself and not influenced by the seductive offers to sell your believes as I am sure that will push hard.
