Sigma 14mm f/1.4 On the Streets of New York

Ғылым және технология

Yes, a 14mm f/1.4 CAN be used for street photography. It isn't easy, but when it works, it's worth it.
I call the Sigma 14/1.4 IL MOSTRO, but I do so with appreciation and respect. I wrestled with it AND Adobe's Generative Fill (and got some incredible results) but this IS a special purpose lens not always easy to tame.

I find it very tough to get a good shot on a superwide. They are brutally unforgiving when it comes to user error. But they can convey a wonderful feeling and intimacy when you hit it right. Very impressive shots there. Just lovely.

Ultra wide angle lenses are hard to use. You really need to nail composition. Otherwise your images will look messy. This Sigma lens is clearly made for landscape astrophotography where you need ton of light. Most of the time in landscape astrophotography, 20mm focal length is wide enough. If it’s not, we can always do panoramic stitches. However, there is one area where 14mm is superior to any other focal length. That is landscape astro timelapse. You can’t do panoramic stitches. 6mm difference can decide between good and bad composition. I learnt it a hard way.

Great images, Hugh. And independent of the review of the Sigma itself, an excellent exposition of why 14mm lenses are so damn hard to tame.

I can also see a great use case for this in caving, where you often cannot lug lights or tripods. This would have been a dream lens for the lantern tour I did of Mammoth Cave last year. I was using a 50 f/1.2, which was great for capturing the people on the tour (though I was still often at 20k+ ISO), but not for capturing the vast expanses except at sufficient distance.

The need to stop down to increase DOF and reduce distortion definitely calls into question the usability of an f/1.4 at 14mm...which is probably why so few manufacturers make such an optic. Nonetheless, I admire Sigma for bringing to market a unique offering, even if it will only benefit very specific use cases.

Ooooh, I love your perspective on that lens! Right now, I have a Laowa 12mm f/2.8 with a magic shift converter, and the 17mm f/4 shift lens is one of my favorites. I like the 12mm as-is as well, but for satisfying enough image quality, I have to stop it down. That 14mm f/1.4 looks like it could become one of my gotos. 🤩 Btw, your images were fantastic. I use FOSS tools, and generative AI didn't make it there, so my solution to your problem would be to take extra shots on the scene so that I have something to blend in the final picture. That means that if I forget something important and cannot construct it in post, I will have to go back and do it again but better. 😂

I have a voigtlander 15mm v2 manual lens in VM mount. Great when I want to shoot Film and surprisingly competent on an SL2S. I'd go as far as to call it a pancake lens due to its size.

Minor nit pick correction: The perspective distortion is not a function of the focal length, it is a function of the field of view. A 14mm lens in front of an APS-C sensor is the same focal length, but has the field of view of a 21mm lens on fullframe, and has less perspective distortion.

I made an ooops on my comment to the Instagram post. I have the Sigma 14 f/1.8 Art .. a massive beast in Nikon F Mount that requires a dedicated filter adapter to use the most expensive filters…should one decide to do that. I love using mine even still today on my Z9 on the FTZ adapter… it still works great. I have had this lens a good while now and even though it’s not the same as the one here… it still should share one particular use point. MINIMUM FOCUS distance…. Take this puppy up to a flower and get right in there … crop off the sides and see what you get. That is what I have been using mine for. One of most favorite photos… is my photo of the horses… the one I asked you about… was a hurry up shot….taken and MIN distance … that’s when I figured it out. Sure it’s not the same lens…. But I’m sure the similarities are shared across the lineage

Not to mix format metaphors , I make my income with a Sigma Art 12-24mm which retails for about $1,600 affixed to my D850, I think it's a great lens, not overpriced for the work I require from it as a real estate photographer. Yes, this thing competes with boat anchors in weight but I always use a tripod, mitigating the weight issue. I wish was faster on principal but when working on a house f6.3 negates the need for a fast lens. My confession: I bought the lens used for $1,100.

This might be weird to say but if we care about camera market, we should wear it out more often to let young and even older people to notice and know it is still a thing in today age and smartphone can't replace them yet, that will drive interests and sales of camera plus you might get new gig from it too, isn't it? There are people think you can just take with smartphone and you are outdated if you still take with dedicated camera. Like Thorsten Overgaard said, Always Wear A Camera. Should I get Tamron 50-400mm 1155g with A7RV 723g or Tamron 18-300mm (27-450mm) 620g with XT5/A6700 557g/493g mainly for photo and if I pair it with iPhone 15 13-52mm 171g for pocketable pic/vid stuffs and Panasonic HC-X1500 25-600mm 1200g camcorder with Zoom M3 mic 135g mainly for video? How about G9 II 658g with 50-200mm (100-400mm) 655g? Full frame Lumix, Nikon and Canon doesn't provide such focal lengths lens, right? Tamron 50-400mm I can crop a lot more, 2X or even 3X, but is it sharp enough to do so? Tamron 18-300mm I can have a 27mm everyday focal length and have native 50mm more tele but can't crop a lot more and quality control doesn't seem consistent base on reviews? They all have 1:2 macro, can I add extension tube to all of them to reach beyond 1:1 macro? Should I add ultra zoom lens but need to change lenses or the iPhone is enough you think? How about Sigma 14mm F1.4 which can crop 2X to 28mm F2.8? A7RV has the unique 4 was screen but not all video type get full sensor readout, XT5 has silver body color and dedicated tactile dials but will I use them much and I want realistic image color mainly, A6700 seem good grip but smaller EVF yet unpocketable, G9 II screen only go side way but it has 300 fps and has my favorite Yellow color as the menu theme!
