Hey everyone, the cause of the square waves loosing definition and the rise and fall times not looking linear is a mistake that I made by not disengaging the bandwidth limit. This is not a problem with the scope.

learnelectronics, regarding your first update about the square waves going to pot, show me. After watching this video the Hantek came out looking much better in a number of comparisons. Square waves went to hell on the Siglent when on the Hantek it was quite recognizable, it could not come up with frequencies when the Hantek could, and the vertical display on the Siglent reduced considerably when you changed from 20mhz to 30mhz, but not on the Hantek. And somewhere the Siglent did not even trigger on something like a 10hz signal. But your comments were continually “Good“ and “No problem"? And you gave it a big thumbs up? You should have investigated the reason for the odd results and redone the video instead of rushing to be first. I know the Siglent can do far better, but I would never know it from this video.

For those not happy with the Siglent showing of a bad square wave. There is a fix for this that is well documented online. There are two unoccupied pads on the input section of this scope. The manufacture forgot to install two compensation capacitors and will need a modification of adding of the two missing 3.9pf capacitors. The procedure takes less than an hour to do. This is only effected on early serial numbers that contain a BA Serial numbers with a BB do not have the issue and the production line added those trim capacitors during production. Siglent will send them to you free of charge if you request them.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the money to get another Tektronix scope so I've been looking at these more affordable scopes. I work mostly on audio equipment including a lot of vacuum tube stuff. Does anyone know if this can handle the high voltages (up to 700VDC) used in this type of electronics?

I think you have missed that the Siglent's frequency counter only seems to count fine, when there is more than one full period on screen. In the cases that it failed to show the frequency, too little of the wave was shown on the screen to have the Siglent show a frequency.

FWIW, got this scope this weekend, decided on it for the serial decoding feature mostly. Couldn't find any vids or decent instructions on how to get it running. This vid is good at showing the feature itself, but this isn't about how to set it up. It's very easy for a noob like me, so I can give you some specific actions to take. I've been only playing with I2C debugging - here's the methodology I follow. Turn it on. I'd suggest hitting default, to reset from wherever you were before to ground zero. Set both probes on 1X. Attach grounds wires to BOTH of them, connect them to the common ground in your circuit. Connect one probe to SLC, other to SDA. Now you may or may not see the signal, most likely it'll be set to auto trigger, so it'll probably flash a wave every 500ms or so depending on the communications going on, maybe faster. Hit the auto setup button, it'll hone in on the signals for you - you should be between and 3 and 5v depending on the logic voltage, and your probes will show 200mv or 500mv or so. Now you can just setup decoding and fine tune from here. Hit decoding button, set channel 1 for SLC and 2 for SDA under the "signal" menu which ain't ideal (channel 2 may not be on after hitting default mind you, hit the 2 button to change it). Pick I2C. You're setting up "decode 1" right now mind you, not sure what that means. "display" turn it on. Hit next page (page 2). Click "list" - pick decode 1, and you're good for the options. You'll probably see no decoded messages at this point, but depends on the actual communication and the horizontal (period?) setting currently set. Set trigger to normal, and adjust the knob to get around 1ms, or 500us. If you're experiencing communications every couple seconds and not miliseconds, you'll probably need to up that to 2 or 5 seconds. Maybe you'll see some decoded messages. If you chose ASCII on menu 1 you can even read the message like a human. I don't usually see them yet, till I zoom in. So do that, zoom, and use the position knob to hone in on sections. If you make the time period longer with horizontal, you'll see more messages listed. If you're zoomed nicely you'll see the messages on the bottom, in the little DNA chain looking bubbles you'll see the full message in there, zoom in and out, pan around and suit to your liking! Want to correct me? have at it! :)

I have a question. I'm learning all this newly, and the rule has been you would want a scope that can do five times the bandwith that you're measuring, so on a 200 mhz scope, why do they lose "waveshape/verticality" at 5,10,etc mhz? Isn't the idea that since the scope is more than five times the bandwidth of those signals that they should be quite good in terms of wave shape? For example when a square wave starts to turn into a sine wave at 10 MHz? Great video by the way

When you were checking the square wave response, you should have terminated the scope end into 50 ohms. 18pF has a reactance of 295 ohms at 30Mhz, and when in parallel with 1M ohm... it will degrade the waveform.

  • @ve6kk

    @ve6kk

Nice video Paul, but I think you missed a great opportunity to show deep memory advantages. At times when you switched from low frequency to higher frequency. There are times when the Hantek loses signal and the Siglent is solid. If you were to use the zoom function, I think the Siglent would have given a nice picture of the wave while the Hantek would have displayed something strange. For instance I think at 19:48, 20:32, and the one at 24:30 was the most glaring example. I used to hate Digital scopes because of what I called digitizing. The Siglent deep memory has the bits to sample that amount of data. So at 24:30 the Hantek is showing what looks like low frequency because it is sampling just parts of the 5MHz signal while the Siglent easily captures the samples and stores them in deep memory - preserving the wave shape.

Wasn't that meaningful of a test, a 30 MHz square wave will have frequency components way higher than 200 MHz and that's what was being attenuated. Better to just see at what frequency (expected around 200 MHz) a sine wave starts being attenuated. So it's not really an issue, it's a 200 MHz scope.

The reason why the Siglent can not lock onto a signal is simple; it can only tell if there is a full cycle on the screen. I would know as I own one. If the signal is off the screen, why would I want to know what the frequency is? I think it was actually a smart decision by them to do this. The Hantek seems to be able to lock a signal no matter what is on a screen and to a user like me, that is also useful but not as much. To anyone on the fence about the Siglent, I totally recommend and use it daily!

The screen and UI seems to be pretty clear, the free licenses for decoding I2C and other things seem to be rare in that price range and overall it doesn't seem to have serious flaws - that's at least the impression I got from watching multiple reviews. 2-Channel should be enough for a hobbyist like me or?

i have this scope, I bought it for calibrating a few synths and have had no problems. However, I was designing a simple circuit with a UJT transistor (2n2646) as a simple oscillator and I wanted to see its resultant waveform. I was able to do that and all looked good, but the scope constantly goes into 'acquiring' mode and takes up to 30 seconds to refresh. It made using the scope really difficult as it couldn't keep up. Has anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening or what I maybe doing wrong?

did you ever figure this out? I'm just looking at a dc signal, but anything greater than 50ms per division results in constant acquiring mode.

@@Pedro_Takahashi_Gunderson_Jr hi Pedro, yes kind of. The frequency was too low for the scope to capture. If you press the Roll button it will draw it in real time that helps somewhat. Also, using Auto my scope couldn't lock onto the waveform I was interested in, there was a lot of other DC noise in the signal, someone suggested reducing the bandwidth of the scope to effectively filter out the frequencies I wasn't interested in. Through a combination of these steps I was able to display the waveform I was looking for.... LFO's in guitar effects and synths are slow, when heard as audio you can hear them go up and down, so it kind of makes sense that you need a bigger capture time (time division) to display them, but then the scope can't keep up. I think that's the essence of issue in this situation, but I could be wrong, I'm learning still too.... I learnt the above from posting to a guitar effects builders forum.

@@silvertongues2 Thanks a lot for the response. I was trying to look at the charging and discharging of a capacitor and the roll mode allowed me to do that. I want to get into designing audio amps, analog synths and guitar effects. so far, I've read Make: Analog Synthesizers, which wasn't comprehensive enough for someone to get into detailed design, and I'm currently reading Designing Audio Amplifiers by Bob Cordell, which will take some time to get through. what approach have you taken to learning audio circuit design?

@@Pedro_Takahashi_Gunderson_Jr the same books, plus a few others. I've been building a lot of schematics and then using the books and forums to understand what is happening, and then I've progressed to making adjustments, and combining blocks of circuits to make my own design. And then I've tried to drill down into each block to understand how it works. I'm up to a point in which I know what parts are needed, and which components influence the outcome, but only high level understanding of what's happening at an electron level.... but, I guess the impression that the more you build (and debug) the better your understanding becomes.....I also found a few guys who I can call upon as mentors if I get stuck or have any questions. One of those guys is a trusted synth repair guy I've used, and the other is someone whose an active member from a facebook guitar pedal forum.... If you can find the right facebook group they're invaluable. Look up Guitar Pedal Builders group. People post schematics, and some really experienced guys offer help. (also, using LTSpice to review a circuit, rather than an oscilloscope, is quick and easy once you're learnt the software, it's what the pro's do when prototyping).

as far as the "backward" rotating knobs go, I think they're just fine. Imagine those indications on the screen populated around the knob itself, in the same order, as if that menu were physically printed on the panel around its very own dedicated knob. Now imagine that highlighted position as an arrow pointing to the selected physically printed function. The functionality now translates almost perfectly for those being used to my old-school CRT Tektronix and HP oscilloscopes where there were no on-screen menus.

My current DSO is a 20 year old HP 54645A. It has a menu setting that allows a choice of Left, Center or Right for the Trigger zero reference position. Most of the time it is set to the Left because I'm only interested in seeing waveform after the trigger event. The Trigger zero reference position stays put regardless of change in Time base setting. I have been informed the SDS1202X E has the same ability. I have not been able to find confirmation in the operator's manual. May an owner of the model please confirm? Once one has become aware of this ability, DSOs that don't have it are unbearable to use.

In 27:41 you say it's a 20(!)MHz scope when, in fact, it's supposed to be a 200 MHz scope. But when I saw how amplitude and shape deteriorated significantly between 20 and 30 MHz square wave input, it DID act like a 20 MHz scope. But you wrote below the bandwidth limit of 20 MHz was still active in the video, so I guess this explains it.
