Siglent SDS 1202X-E vs Hantek DSO2D15 - Serial Decode, Bandwidth, Rise Time, USB Wave Capture

Ғылым және технология

I'm hoping to save others from feeling the need to do what I did... buy both scopes to see which is the better value for money. There are a number of youtube videos out there on both scopes, but none that I found hit this handful of topics in this level of detail.
Cliff Notes:
Scope Comparison Video
Bandwidth
Rise Time
Memory Depth
USB Waveform Captures
Decode
Hantek Automatically limits Memory Depth in Serial Decode mode
Siglent still decodes when zoomed out to 1s or more
Siglent Decodes in Windowed mode
Siglent has better Decode Format / config settings
Problems / Troubleshooting
DS5072 USB doesn't work
SDO2D15 USB doesn’t work
Siglent UART Decode didn’t work
Firmware update resolved this. Most recent firmware bug fix says it fixed this is the revision notes but the problem remains.

UPDATE: RESPONSE FROM SIGLENT TO MY KZread COMMENT REPORTING THE BUG TO THEM "Thanks for your feedback. We've already told the relevant technical team to deal with the bugs about this version of firmware, and you can use the firmware version 1.3.26 for the time being. If you have any other technical questions, please feel free to send us at support@siglentna.com."

Siglent EU never published firmware version 1.3.27 so I didn't know it existed. In fact I thought they'd given up updating this scopes firmware. I've been using firmware version 1.3.26 ever since it was published and have never had any problems with UART serial decode. As a quick test I used the 1KHz CAL signal as a data source with custom baud rate set to 2000 bits/sec, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop on firmware version 1.3.26 and the scope correctly decoded 55H with the character windows correctly butted up next to each other. I tried the same setup with version 1.3.27 firmware I got from Siglant NA and the character windows are blank with gaps between them, which is obviously wrong.

@@chrisg6597 Just got my new SDS1202X-E scope, which arrived with 1.3.27 installed. Sure enough, UART decode fails if decode/trigger are SET for stop bits > 1, and also fails unless the source uses 2 stop bits. BUG. Will now try 1.3.26, as the only other documented changes in 1.3.27 are for PC connections, which I don't need/use. EDIT: Yup, 1.3.26 seems to work with a single stop bit. Keeping that version.

Siglent SDS 1202X-E is awesome finding between "affordable" scopes. I have Hantek DSO2D15 for a while, it has kinda everything, however many of features are only for words. Trigger glitches, math functions glitch, in slow resolution (50 ms and slower) graph often freeze with impulse packets clobbering into single color ribbon without a chance to distinguish something, overall speed is sloweish by general. In our new office we have Siglent SDS 1202X-E - tried it, realized that DSO2D15 is not for work. Seen this video and bought SDS 1202X-E for myself. Thanks about notice about firmware upgrade :) By the way which probe you're using?

You really want to get a dedicated logic analyser. The dreamsourcelabs have internal buffering and can store a huge amount of data. Mine captures spi at 5mhz and decodes it faultlessly. Decoding 110k serial is a nothing. Or use Salea 8 channel clone for 10 bucks which is a lot better than your any of your scopes. By a long way. Both these use the sigrok or derivatives. They can decode 100s of protocols. (I have the new rigol scope but I would not bother using it as a logic analyser) Good idea building a fast pulse generator to test the bandwidth. I was yelling when you were using a sine wave to test the bandwidth. ha. I got one of the dedicated generators. My scope is 200MHz and measures 220 by rise time.

I agree with you on the logic analyzer. Ive had the bus pirate logic sniffer on my home lab bench for 7 years now but have yet to it. I figured a scope with bus decode is nice because you can watch the communication for any kind of glitches or weak signal strength (abnormally low logic level or runt pulses). I see them as two different tools for two different purposes. As far as the pulse gen. I'm still not happy with my edge speed so I'm building a transistor avalanche pulse gen and I have parts on order for an LT6905 because I read it has really fast edges. I have no current need for even 200 bandwidth but it's a fun little project just to see what I can get. Of course all theis playing with scopes has me looking at the Rigols that are hackable to 500Hz. Again, way faster than I need an can justify the money for. I think I'm finally settling on the SDS1104X-E. If I return another scope Amazon might drop me as a customer! 🤣 Thanks again for the feedback!

@@mcorrive12 I also have a bus pirate. Most every time I went to use it, what I wanted to use it for didn't work, found it was a bug on the tracker, then tried to compile the firmware, only to find it either didn't compile or didn't fit on the device. Maybe I should send you mine to keep yours company on the shelf and live happily ever after :) Of course a man can't be happy with a 5nS pulse time! Instead of building one, I got this one from Ali: "Fast Edge Pulse Generator 350 Picosecond Rising Edge" for $30 USD. It's got a BNC on the board that goes right to the instrument, so no cables or probes. I needed this about as much you probably do. :) May I suggest you never look into getting a GPSDO, it's straight to the time nut asylum from there. PS. My logic analyser picks up glitches at the level they would be a logic level event way better than my Rigol DHO.

@@originalmianos I use a 34-channel LogicPort USB analyser. 500 mega-samples/sec on 34-channels simultaneously, so it easily does logic to 100Mhz and higher. But having it in-scope for simple stuff saves a lot of fuss!

About the usb drive not working - with what file system is the usb drive? The oscilloscope is running linux, so you need to use file system, which linux support, like exFAT. I had the same oscilloscope and the usb is working just fine - screenshots, firmware updates.

I considered a 2nd scope going Hantek but the price difference isnt that much. +100$ for a higher quality one that works a little better..
