    The cup of water disappears from her hand because Andrew/Teddy is traumatized by water, and his mind is randomly erasing the water from his vision in that moment. One of the earliest clues that what we're seeing isn't reliable. That's also why he gets violently seasick at the beginning, and why his mind keeps telling him there's a massive rainstorm happening outside the asylum. All his water-trauma popping up in random ways.

    Yeah, very few people notice this. But its the biggest giveaway he's the patient! Which kinda ruined the twist as we already knew early on. Though rewatching the m movie there are other clues of course.

    "Shutter Island" is an anagram of both "truths and lies," and "truths/denials," The anagram shenanigans fit even better when you consider that it's revealed later in the movie that the name of protagonist Edward Daniels is an anagram of his real identity, Andrew Laeddis, while Rachel Solando is also an anagram of Daniels' dead wife Dolores Chanal.

    Shutter Island was mainly filmed in Massachusetts, with Taunton being the location for the World War II flashback scenes.Old industrial buildings in Taunton's Whittenton Mills Complex replicated the Dachau concentration camp.The old Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, Massachusetts, was another key location. Cawley's office scenes were the second floor of the chapel during the late evening. Lights were shone through the windows to make it look like it was daytime. The crew painted the hospital's brick walls to look like plywood. This served the dual purpose of acting as scenery and blocking the set from view of a local road. The crew wanted to film at the old Worcester State Hospital, but demolition of surrounding buildings made it impossible. The stone lodge, next to Leach Pond, at Borderland State Park in Easton, Massachusetts, was used for the cabin scene. The film used Peddocks Island as a setting for the story's island. East Point, in Nahant, Massachusetts, was the location for the lighthouse scenes.The scenes where Teddy and Chuck are caught in the hurricane were filmed at the Wilson Mountain Reservation in Dedham, Massachusetts.Filming ended on July 2, 2008. Bro, I am super glad you loved this movie because I line 2 miles from medfield state hospital and we go for walks there often!

    In order to reflect Teddy's broken mental state and keep the audience unconsciously uncomfortable throughout the film, Scorsese included a number of INTENTIONAL continuity errors ultimately intended to foreshadow Shutter Island's big twist. Iike the one where a patient can be seen "drinking" a glass of invisible water, only for the next shot to show an actual glass of water.

  • @williamdrake6711
    @williamdrake671111 ай бұрын

    Also I thought a cool fact was how much CGI was used in this movie..the exteriors of Shutter Island were achieved through a combination of practical locations, miniatures, and green screen compositing, but many of the Ward C interiors were shot on partial sets completed in post-production

  • @akyhne

    @akyhne

    Thats VFX, not CGI. CGI is part of VFX, just like green screen, miniature, matte painting, parallax camera work etc. Most VFX, like what you described, goes back to almost the birth of film making, while CGI is a fairly new part of VFX.

    Fantastic movie, and I don't usually like Scorsese movies, but I like this one. I caught that things were really weird, but my mind was stuck on Asylum = supernatural, so I missed some of the clues. The ending just shook me, but I can totally understand his reasoning. If I suddenly realized that my entire family was gone due to my partner deleting my children and me then deleting my partner, I'd make the same decision he did. I'd rather spend the rest of my life in what ever oblivious state of mind a lobotomy puts you in than to live with that knowledge and without my family. He knew the staff at the hospital did their best to take care of all their patients, so he knew they would take care of him after the lobotomy too... and he knew that lobotomized patients tended to die sooner back then as well, so it would be a quicker end of his life.
