This is legitimately one of the greatest movies of all time imo. The story, acting, cinematography, score,... everything is perfect.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon. It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again. As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”. No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world. An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

Not a lot of people seem to do this one, and I don't know why, as it's goddamn brilliant. Scorsese and DiCaprio had a really good run around the time of this film, including The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street. As to the ending of this one, I think Leo's final line about living as a monster or dying as a good man indicated that he hadn't actually regressed...he just wanted to be lobotomized rather than to live with knowing what he did, so he pretended that the experiment failed. Look at his doctor's face as he's watching Leo being led off; he knows he's actually sane and is choosing to go to his end. It's a great film to rewatch, because you catch all the little clues indicating what's really happening, such as the fact that his "partner" doesn't know how to take his gun off his belt.

Agreed! Great movie. “Arrival” with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner is spectacular as well. Very twisty. If you love this, and you like space or alien stories, check out Arrival. You won’t be disappointed. Great visuals and insane soundtrack. Take care! Love from the 206!❤

this movie is so trippy. on a second watch youll notice so many little things, like the water glass during the interviews. the background being hazey in some shots.

Great review. You missed something though… lol… the end of the movie. He didn’t regress. It did work. He just wanted them to give him the lobotomy so that he would really forget. He wanted to end it. That’s why he said: “What’s worse? To live as a monster or to die as a good man?” He wanted to die as a good man. He didn’t want to spend the rest of his life aware of his reality

I don't know how I missed this reaction! Glad you loved this one. This might be Leo's best performance and I can't take how bleak the ending is, but I still love this movie. You're spot on about the sound design, it's immaculate, same with the cinematography. Scorsese is brilliant, in general.

Did you actually realize that he didn't regress? his last line gives it away, he chose to die as a good man than to accept the reality that he is a monster. So he knew it and consciously wanted to die

206 in the house! Seattle is here watching my second reaction of yours. Once Upon a Time was great. Glad you got to research the Manson thing. Sharon was a true Angel. Her sister is still alive and approved of the movie. All my love to you! I’m an old lady…53 from North of Seattle, WA…and you are like a son I never had. Thought it might help for you to know your audience a little. 😁😂😀🤩

You have a place to crash here is you need it. Log home my Pa built in 1978-1980, , awesome location right in the middle of everything just North of Lake Washington in Brier. It’s right next to Bothell, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Kenmore. It’s a tiny town in the middle of a bunch of larger cities. You would be MOST welcome. I can tell you are a young man of fine character. Anyhow, come on up! ❤😅

I'm not sure if it's because maybe you weren't taught much about it. But the visions he has of all the dead people it's because he was a soldier who saw the death camps in Germany. That's what all those flashbacks were. All the dead bodies, the German soldier who shot himself in the head, the firing squad etc etc. It's supposed to be obvious that that's what the flashbacks are.

he did not regress watch that part again & listen to what he said to his doctor he said "which could be worse to live as a monster? or to die a good man? he actally did not regress & look how leo looks at his doctor when he said that. If that part does show but anyway Leo could notlive with the fact that he murdered his wife even though he did not regress because the treatment worked he did not want to keep thinking what if he this time regresses again so be basically killed himself nso he doesn't have to remember everyday what he has done but anyway I now have to watch mimento lolz I wished you would've said spoiler alert when mentioning mimento because now I know it'll be like over & over as you stated looolz shrug 🤷🏾‍♀
