Hi Mike I just found your channel and have to say you explain things more clearly than the big dogs of knife making. Your camera angles for the grinds are very helpful. And I like the tip about the wooden rest. Thanks, Ed from Courtenay.

Hey Ed, thanks for the kind words! I feel like I ramble and repeat myself a lot but hopefully I get across what I'm trying to say!

I draw out my bevel with a sharpy then get it to about 80 percent of the way with 7 inch angle grinder in a vice, 90 percent of the way with disk sander and last 10 percent on the belt, i found this to be the most afordable way. One of my buddies uses a steel cutting blade in his table saw and does the whole initial grind with it, but im not that brave

Mordy Fisher grinding bevels in a table saw might be the craziest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.

I could see the angle grinder helping remove a lot of the bulk, as long as you don't go too deep and develop a hollow grind when you don't want one!

@@MikejonesknifeandtoolTk yeah I use it upside down in the vise, and work on it just like you'd use a wetstone. So theres no risk of hollow grinding. Also i know theres probably no going back for you now, but i you did the first half of your bevel work with your edge facing down, you would save so much on belts, edge sheer is only really a problem when the edge is leading and cutting in vs trailling and skating over

This is great! These tuts are so insightful! Do you have suggestions when you get to the tip of the blade, where the edge starts to curve up to the point? Do you tend to just drag straight across or move the blade outward to accommodate the curve? I couldn’t quite tell in the video.

Hmm, it's hard to say, I definitely keep the blade horizontal (don't try to turn the blade to keep the edge perpendicular to the belt direction) but I think I might pull the blade away from the belt slightly as I get to the tip. I've never really noticed!

The motor spins at about 3600rpm. There are a lot of times I wish I could slow it down. Hopefully the next one has a VFD
