Shrink Plastic for Beginners: Coloring, Cutting, Shrinking, and Sealing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

!Here are some updates regarding shrink plastic.....
YOU CAN USE CRAFT ACRLIC PAINT AS LONG AS YOU APPLY IT IN A THIN LAYER. USE A DENSE SPONGE TO DAB IT ON THE PLASTIC.
Instead of modpodge you can also use acrylic sealer spray. If you used sharpie or alcohol based ink, use the Krylon Kamar Spray and for other colorants, use acrylic sealer spray. Always test a piece out before spraying it on your project.
You can also use acrylic spray sealer to seal your plastic before the resin to increase adhesion. BUT make sure test it first to see if it’s compatible with the colorants you used.

***I bake my shrink plastic on a parchment paper, Or with aluminum foil under the parchment paper. I don’t use baking pan because it can heat up too quickly and can be a source of direct contact heat. Shrink plastic shrinks more evenly with hot air. I also bake one piece at a time so I have more control. The shrink plastic I'm using by Grafix, the baking temperature range is 300-350 and I bake mine around 320. If you find your plastic yellowing after baking or shrinking unevenly, try lowering the temperature. It's always best to bake a test piece so you know what temperature to set at.
*can you use a microwave to bake the plastic? No you can’t! It will only work if you have a microwave that has a convection oven function.
*** PLEASE MAKE SURE THE SEALER YOU USE IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE COLORANTS YOU USED. USUALLY BUT NOT ALWAYS, IF YOU USED WATER BASED COLORANTS, USE OIL BASED SEALERS. IF YOU USED OIL BASED COLORANTS USE WATER BASED SEALERS. LIKE I SAID THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE SO MAKE SURE TO DO A TEST PIECE BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY APPLY TO YOUR FINAL PROJECT!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please ALWAYS use resin with proper precautions including wearing proper PPEs (glove, mask, respirator etc) AND working in a well ventilated space. I recommend getting a hold of the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) info that every resin company has available to the public (by law). This has all the info about the resin you are using including the precautions you need to take and first aid care. Watch my resin safety video for more info: • RESIN SAFETY | Importa...

Why do I use two different types of resin in my projects?
I use a casting resin to cast and a doming resin for doming.
Casting resin is usually low in viscosity and works very well in molds without much issue with the bubbles. Also the low viscosity will allow the resin to reach detailed area of the mold. Doming resin is thick in viscosity and holds its shape very nicely. It creates a full dome and tends to hold the surface tension much better than low viscosity resin. So lower risk of the resin dripping off the sides. It also gives the piece a smooth, flawless finish.

FAQ: Q: can you use a microwave to shrink the plastic? A: I never tried it and probably never will but I’m going to assume no. Since microwave has hot spots and doesn’t heat evenly. But let me know if it does or not! Q: Can I use nail top coat to seal it? A: You can but remember some colorants will smudge or bleed when nail polish is applied. For example sharpie marker will dissolve with nail top coat.

Excellent work! Explained thoroughly and very easy for all to understand. I would add to everyone, as a safety precaution, to try and get a dedicated oven to and for your crafting. Having had several college courses on Plastics and Composites Technology, I would warn everyone to please be very aware of the types of materials that you are using. Plastics and composites are extremely fun and if you practice the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) it can keep you and your loved ones safe from perhaps some toxicities that are found on some materials. Also, if possible, try and use your dedicated oven outside your living space, again, just as a safety measure. Again, great job with this video!😊

Thanks for the great video! I’m making some keychains using this method for Christmas presents this year, and I just finished my first batch tonight. They were so fun to make, but deceptively challenging, and I wouldn’t have known how to do it were it not for your tutorial. Thanks a ton! I know my family and friends are gonna love the keychains I made. 😭❤️ EDIT: I also used your printable shrink plastic tutorial for them.

I’ve been getting curious about shrink plastic after seeing others use it. Since I make resin D&D dice, I was thinking of using the shrink plastic to design the faces and inserting them into my dice molds. I haven’t bought anything yet, so I’m glad I checked out how and the best way to use it first

Wow, Amy! ! ! I just happened on you in my feed. I’m 77 & this brings back the best of memories. I did this with my son, now 57 & his 2 children, my babies now 36 n 32. I can still visualize us at table with Christmas music on making Christmas ornaments that STILL DECORATE MY SONS & GRANDCHILDREN’S TREES. O WHAT WONDERFUL MEMORIES YOU JUST BROUGHT BACK. It’s 2:30am & I cant wait to call my grandkids to set up a date with my GREAT grandbabies to start on their new Christmas tradition. From the bottom of my ♥️, thank you so very much. God bless you & may your future memories be as powerful as mine. Have a peaceful day precious Amy. 🌹🌹🌹
