SHOWDOWN! Yaesu FTDX-10 VS Yaesu FT-710 AESS, Which is Better?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I welcome Doug, N4HNH, onto the channel. He runs the channel ‪@n4hnhradio‬ and does some really good videos about receiver performance on many models of Ham Radio. Today we compare the new FT-710 AESS from Yaesu to it's older brother, the FTdx-10. Doug has a more detailed breakdown of this comparison on his channel, but you will want to get the highlights and main differences from this video.

My first 100 watt radio (710) and I really love it. It's almost as easy to use as my 705. Yeasu could shock the world again if instead making another 10 watt QRP radio, they instead make it a G-90 killer, with 25 watts, internal tuner and 2m and 70 cm. That would set the Ham world on it's ear.

The internal tuner apart. Yaesu did that years ago with the FT-857D. Used in tandem with the Atas 120 mobile antenna. You have your internal tuner.. 😉

These Japanese Manufacturers absolutely need to include a 10:1 Tuner instead of the regular 3:1 they have been making for years. Out in the field most antennas are a compromise so you need a bigger match range.

Well that’s what everybody expected with the FT-818 but a more powerful output takes more power input something that a portable radio doesn’t want. It’s a trade off. I think the new Lithium Batteries are a fix for that. Yes even on CW it would be nice to increase power and especially beneficial on SSB. It was stupid not to have included 10 watts at a minimum on the 818.

Though not a holder of any sort of radio license, a customer abandoned a Yaesu FT-710 aess in my, "shop," The 3rd of March 2023. I have no equipment abandonment policy. Thus, I have been guarding the Yaesu Ft-710 aess since that night. I tested it and it operated flawlessly. The issue must have been on his antenna, or power supply. As much as I tried to contact the owner of the Yaesu, I could not do it. I stopped trying after three weeks. Come the third of January, I will be take the radio out of its original box and packing and make it mine. Perhaps I may sell it or aquire an amateur radio license. The problem is, I can not hold a conversation if my life depends on it. It may sell it. I am very curious about it. Thus, I will be experimenting with it before considering the possibility to sell it.

I just picked up the FT-710, excellent deal from RandL electronics, received it from UPS on Friday.......and made 14 QSO contacts this past weekend. Being this is my first HF radio, I find that not having any experience with other comparable radios, I'm not biased or spoiled. I absolutely love this radio, the audio is clear and packed with ton of features. All that and running just a random wire end fed multiband antenna, I'll be working contacts with this as my primary base station HF radio.

I recently acquired a new FT-710 in a straight across swap for a Kenwood TS-590SG. I wasn't too impressed at first as I found many of the functions to be somewhat glitchy. However, after installing the latest firmware update (March 2023), it's actually a pretty decent radio now. CW keying is much smoother and digital noise reduction works noticeably better. In the meantime, I really missed my TS-590SG so I bought another one. The FT-710 is a very good transceiver but I still prefer the Kenwood for its well thought out ergonomics and solid, reliable performance. Lack of a waterfall display is no big deal for me because I operated without one for 38 years and that's what I'm used to.

I really want this radio to test in the truck on a local hill at night with a tuned whip set for the differing bands. No power box and ground hardware needed. The extra speaker and power suppy can be used later when I test for the license and hook up to all this. As you can see I am new but like the versatility of the field set up to get into the hobby relatively cheap yet still have some fun with a whip up on the hill at night. I did notice that, with a Heil Proset headset. you can't do something like you can with the IC-7300: you can't partially plug the headset in and be able the hear both on the headset AND the external speaker (which helps when I'm teaching a new ham about HF and/or acting as their CO, so I can hear the contact they're making while they have the headset on).

Keep in mind, there were crowds of people EVERYWHERE...Over 2 days I never saw anyone in front of the 7300. I thought to myself, no big mystery here... I own both radios. The most noticeable difference on receive to my ears. Is the DNR algorithms sound watery on the FTDX10. However not so much on the FT-710AESS..Considering the difference in price. I would say the FT-710AESS is the better bang for the Buck..

It's not just crowding of the buttons it's the fact they had a chance to jump out in front of competitors with back lit lights, like they did on the 991A?? It is a great radio but they could have made it super and they failed.

I would like a 705 competitor. At the same time it very well could be more money. I'm at the point where I don't have a radio that I would consider selling, it's a possibility. I'm looking at having dedicated hf and UHF/VHF radios for the shack, the truck and SOTA. That's a bit of money there. I will give one of my baofengs to a new ham, but thats about it.
