This radio probably has the same disadvantages as FTDX10 and FTDX101. YAESU, please, do this: - introduce averaging of spectrum scope (and if it's required - remove 3DSS waterfall - it is completely useless) - to speed up antenna tunning; most tuners on the market works much much faster (algorithm is not optimal) - radio should not shift the frequency when changing modulation between AM FM USB LSB. Only changing to CW should shift frequency (700Hz) With this amendments all FTDX radios and FT710 will become much better.

@@robertdec3713 In regards to averaging YAESU engineering has studied the pros and cons regarding the suitability of Averaging applied to our FTDX-101/10 and scope design. We understand the theory, that Averaging calms down the noise level display. This theory might be the reason behind the wrong impression that weak signals could be visible by the Averaging function. However, we have concluded that the visual performance in terms of the noise level is slight, especially in a small display. Most importantly, averaging would sacrifice the ability to find the small signals in a noisy environment, which is not optimum for HF operation. In summary, we believe searching for small signals is the more important over smoothing out the small display screen by the Averaging function. For this reason, we have decided not to include the averaging function in the radio, though we do make it available in the remote operation on the SCU-LAN10 PC.

@@YaesuUSAOfficial Let me have a different opinion - now, in this chaos on spectrum (I'm not talking about waterfall) weak signals vanish, especially when they are short-lived. I emphasize - the waterfall itself is OK. So maybe not "averaging" just "hanging"? Please don't get me wrong - FTDX101/10 are great radios and I'm not going to change them. I just want to improve what is almost perfect :) Thanks for answer, 73!

Great collection of personal viewpoints. I'm in the market now for a new HF/6M rig. Need to "go to class" on SDR radios. One comment implied there are one or two general disadvantages in the architecture compared to old man Armstrong's approach. Casual mention of the StepIR antenna is important. My (borderline brilliant) question: Which of these radios, if any, performs noticeably better than the others in real-world situation (1) using an inverted V antenna in the suburbs and (2) using a hung-in-a-tree dipole or portable vertical antenna to do Parks on the Air in the woods somewhere?

I need to turn my volume up to hear the radio, but then as soon as you start narrating it comes booming out too loud and I have to turn the volume down again. Would be a much smoother/easier watch if you can get the levels more evenly matched. Still enjoyed it though. Thanks for the content 🙏⭐⭐⭐

I have the FTDX-10 and can spot a number of significant advantages of it over this 710. Unless the street price comes in under 1K I don't see the point of this lower feature model that is only slightly smaller. People keep referring the the FTDX-10 list price but I don't know anyone who paid more than $1300 as the FTDX-10 is always on sale. I think we need to wait and see how pricing plays out.

Thanks for the first look. Maybe this fits a niche in some other market, but I'm struggling to see what problem this radio is designed to solve. It's very big and clunky for a field radio, at least compared to something like a 891. The 3:1 tuner isn't going to be enough for all field antennas. The manual says it has a 2.2A current draw on receive... The 991A crowd is turned off by the lack of VHF/UHF. If you want a big SDR HF-only radio for the field, the IC7300 is cheaper. If you need a base station radio for the QTH, why not just get a FTdx-10 for essentially the same price? I'm not sure why they felt the need the design a "budget FTdx-10" that's not actually budget. I wish they had put a better tuner or a second antenna hookup or VHF/UHF or really any other useful feature into the radio besides that external speaker...

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Perhaps, but it's $1299. An FTdx10 is currently available for .... $1299. Why wouldn't the beginner just step up to the intermediate radio for the same price? I get that the FTdx-10 price is affected by coupons and the 710 might fall in price, but the prices currently at launch are what they are. And will the 710 actually go down in price over time, in the current manufacturing environment? Many people expected the IC-705 to go down in price after launch, and it went UP! In my perfect world Yaesu would have made a G90 killer, not a baby FTdx10 that's the same price as an FTdx10.

I still cannot see why the fT710, Yaesu has the FTDX10. DX10 slightly larger, similar features although I do like the one knob on the DX10 for adjusting IF bandwidth. FT710 this is multi-function knob. Both the FTDX10 nd FT710 are nice rigs. Thanks for your excellent video, but do ask why a FT710 with already the FTDX10.

So the Sherwood test on the FT710 is out and the results are basically the same as those for the FTDX10. So what does the FTDX10 have over the FT710 that justifies the extra $200? I have owned an FTDX10 since Dec 2021.

It is the only big box top of the line ham rig I see, even Kenwood seems to have stopped selling there big box, TS990s. Where is yaESU???????????

Shame you skated over the rf gain control? I believe the rf gain control is as important as af control , and more important than all the digital noise reduction put together ? Or at least it should be ? My icom ic 7300 rf gain control is absolutely rubbish. The dx10 works great , my old ic 746 , ic 7200 ic 781 ,ic 703 ,ft 3000 , ft817 , kenwood ts870 and 480hx all have great rf gain control but pure sdr rf gain is mostly junk ? In a noisy static crashing top band or 80m a good working rf gain is invaluable. Sadly my ic 7300 is a good all round rig apart from a horrendous rf gain control. My other SDR Xiegu g90 and Xiegu x6100 is also rubbish rf gain control. Anxious to find out if the rf gain on this ft710 is just like the ftdx10 which is just fine or a pile of rubbish like the ic 7300 and ic7610 ? All the back-light and waterfall is of little intrest if the most important controls are useless .

  • @HamRadioCrashCourse

I don’t think I skated over it. It’s a dial. I demonstrated it goes up and down and reduces incoming rf. What you see on the waterfall is not commensurate to what you hear as they are different sdrs.

One of these radios was left with me in early may of this year, 2023. It was left with me when the owner wanted me to examine it for any quick repair I can put into it. He did not want to go through the inconvenience of shipping back to Yaesu. However, after he left it, I have not heard from him at all. Both his telephone number and cellular number are disconnected. The emails go unanswered. The radio has been protected and guarded by me since he left it. I have been very tempted to connect it to listen to it. All I have for an antenna is a very long length of wire hoisted up a very tall flagpole. But, that is all I need to listen. I have been tempted to unbox it. There is nothing wrong with it. All I found were bad settings. It is not my radio. But, it is in my guardianship.
