I have the field. Bought it for $840 with the intent to use it portable. It’s small, dense, a bit heavy to backpack a long way, but feature rich. Yeah you need a bigger battery.

I have the 991A, the 891, & bought the 710 about 6 months ago exclusively for POTA. Over the 891, the 710 has a way nicer display & live scope. As mentioned, a tuner, and one of the best receivers on the market. Using the menu system is so much nicer than the 891. I transport my 710 with a Harbor Freight Pelican type case, which I picked up on sale for $20. I do not notice it draining the battery so much faster than the 891. I will not get rid of my 891, where if I’m hiking to my POTA spot, I would not want to be carrying my 710. For the money, I believe you cannot buy a better HF radio than a 710!

    My 991S is my field radio…it’s rugged enough…and it’s excellent as a POTA rig…it’s all about power consumption…good antennas are the problem…I mean good antennas…yeah, I know…dipole but still…

I've been using my 710 for POTA activations for the past year. I love it and it's perfect IMO. I do primarily CW for 3-4 hours and with a 30aH LiFePO battery, I have no issues. This is a fantastic rig for many reasons.

Hey guys, interesting sidenote: I just got a used YAESU FT-897. Portable enough for me. The ICOM IC-718 is a bit bigger, but just a bit. I receive good signal reports for both using the same antenna. Receive is good with both. I really like the ability to type in a frequency on the 718, but, have not found a way to do that on the 897. I HATE that I need a different connector for attaching headsets. Anyway, thank you. Your videos are ALWAYS worth watching.

I bought the 710 on black Friday along with a 100w qrp manual tuner, I would have bought the 891 but the offer was super tempting and I don't regret it, I took my 710 from California to Argentina and back without problems, it works for everything, my best use was in 6m and 15m

My only HF rig is the FT-710 Field and I use it weekly for POTA with no problem. It is a great radio. I use a Bioenno 20 Ah battery which has more than enough power and capacity. I use it with the Reel Pota-ble EFHW and with the built-in internal radio tuner I can work many different bands with no problem.

I'm using the 710-Field as my portable radio (also my first and only HF radio so far), and it's amazing for POTA and other portable ops. I wouldn't put it in a backpack necessarily and go hiking, but it's perfectly great for sitting anywhere with a surface in front of you to do it!

Also, Joe's not wrong about the higher power requirement, but really, a 20Ah battery (which these days is fairly cheap and not that heavy) gets me through a day!

i take my FTDX10 out in the park sometimes. Usually when I'm camping for a couple days. if you are looking to buy a rig for the first time and your choice is the 891 and the 710, i'd pick the 710 if you can afford the extra cost.

I have the 891. It is my only rig and I use it for home and portable. I am saving to get the 710, but I am not going to get rid of the 891. It is an amazing rig, and will use it as my travel rig, for going on vacation, using 11 meters in the car (MARS mod) and have it as a backup for just in case.

During my first activation with the 710 I got a handful of comments on the quality of the audio, even more than I do with my DX10. During my third activation I literally called CQ one time after spotting myself on POTA and in 1 1/2hrs later I have 134 contacts logged without ever needing to call CQ again.....of course the airwaves hot that day, but without a good rig and antenna, it would not have been a pileup from start to finish. I love that rig and will say if anyone has a DX10, it's rather easy to use other than to say the buttons are in different places, but the functions are very similar. Like others have said, it would be quite heavy for SOTA unless you can drive to your spot of don't mind hauling a 10# rig.

One of my local guys brought one out for a POTA, and oh man did it sound good. I have a 991 and an 891 and I'm happy with both, but I was a little jealous of the 710. He was feeding it with a 20 amp hour battery, and luckily he only had to carry it about 30 ft from the parking spot to the picnic table, and for that it was fine.

Fond memories logging & dupe checking (and trying to keep up!) in the CW tent in the 70's & 80's. Our club used a huge, towed, military generator, as described. I'm a night owl, so I'd work the late night shift. Good times! de KC9O . .

FT-710 switches between Digital and SSB with a couple clicks and has presets for FT-8 and others Has in internal sound card as well as an internal tuner. Super easy!

I own both. Ive used both on POTA. I'll never take my 710 out again. It's a beast compared to the 891. One of the biggest downers of the 710 is in moderate to low sunlight, you can't see the screen. It's just way overkill for POTA. 891 hands down. Just my opinion.

I saw a video you made of IC-718 and was wondering if you ever put it on ft8? if so do you remember how you did it. I know the video was 6 years ago, but just hoping. Thanks for any advice n7kon

I made a video on doing Winlink with the IC-718, but I never really did much FT8 with it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHmfkrmpm8u5ZbQ.html I would imagine the settings should be similar. Unfortunately I sold my IC-718 a few years back when I purchased my FTdx3000, so I can't verify what would be the best settings for that mode.

The 710 isn’t crazy expensive…very affordable if you own a home right…my FT 991a was more expensive…I take that out for POTA…it’s excellent for POTA…the 710 is definitely the perfect radio for Home and Field…a decent battery and solar charger…honestly, I only do field because as an amateur astronomer…I use it as part of my radio telescope too…

I plan on powering mine with a Bioenno 20ah and I have a eco Worthy 50ah. I use for my ft 891. You can use solar to top off. The time you get depends on what modes you plan on using.

Buying a 710 Field has made my DX10 and 891 pretty much redundant because I find it a LOT more enjoyable/less frustrating to operate. RX audio sounds nicer (smoother) to my ears too.

The correct answer is, "FT-710." Why? It has a built in DVR. I do not want to call, "CQ POTA" all day long. It also has a great onboard audio equalizer. For those that do not use a good antenna, and so many don't, it has a built in ATU. The list goes on........ Barry, KU3X

  • @KB9VBRAntennas

For reference, the FT-891 also has a DVR for auto keying. But is lacks a tuner and the equalizer isn't as sophisticated. There certainly are a lot of other compelling reasons to choose the FT-710 as a portable rig.

Do you mean the external speaker for 710? The 710 does have a built in speaker on the top.
