I am so excited for Bandstand!! Laura Osnes and Corey Cott are beyond amazing, but them together is just genius! Hopefully we will soon get a better idea of what the musical is about...and I get shivers just thinking about what the cast album will be like!! Good luck on opening night, Bandstand! ;)

The show centers around the band members, all of who are back from WW2, dealing with PTSD. Laura's character is a war wife and newly widowed. Without giving too much away, the music is fun and upbeat, but the scenes and story is actually really heartbreaking. The show's design and talent, rolled into one, is seriously breathtaking.

Thank you, +Darling Jen! Wikipedia doesn't give a whole lot of information other than that. I have no doubt that it's breathtaking - hopefully the cast album will demonstrate that just as much as seeing it on stage. From what you said, I assume that you have seen the show? I really wish I could, but I probably won't be able to. Then again, never say never, so maybe I will someday ;)

Yes, I saw it first week of previews. The plot was depressing af. The press is playing on the 1940s era music and style. While the show does have all this, the scenes are about the lives of these soldiers and being integrated back into society; music being their saving grace. Corey's character, Donny, was friends with Laura's character, Julia's, husband when he died in battle. I don't want to give too much away, because of the intensity it hits at, but...once the album comes out GET READY for Welcome Home. That is the song that KILLS you. Hopefully you will see it one day. At least in a bootleg, lol. :)

Yes, there is a recording of Laura singing "Welcome Home" on KZread. It's purely amazing. I can only imagine how it feels to hear it live. Thanks for all the extra information! It definitely sounds like a deep show, but also one that needs to be heard and told, so that makes it all the more impactful. And as much as I try to stay away from bootlegs, this one might be an exception ;) (At least once one gets circulating, that is)

Donny (played by Corey Cott) has just returned from fighting in World War II and is trying to get back on his feet. He is a composer and hears about a song contest that is looking for a song to honor veterans returning from the war. So he and Julia (Laura Osnes), the wife of Donny's friend who died during the war, come together to form a band. They recruit a bunch of fellow veterans to be a part of the band so they can enter the contest.

The general gist is about returning ww2 soldiers dealing with ptsd and music being their saving grace. They have no money and Donny (Corey) decides to make a band to win a radio to film contest.

I haven't seen the show, so I don't know how much Bandstand deals with race? But the idea of an all-white band of WWII vets competing in swing music seems more than a little problematic...... (but I would love some more insight on this if anyone has seen the show)

I feel like the leads weren't a very good choice, their voices are too Broadway not that real old timey voice. I think that it would be better if we had some poc in this show! I mean come on! And don't come and tell me "Well it was the 40's" black people, black soldiers existed back then too. Plus I feel that poc would bring the real soul to those songs and they'd sound more accurate to the time.
