Show and Tell: Microscape's City Miniatures

Ғылым және технология

We check out Microscape's striking 1:5000 scale models of Manhattan and Chicago. These miniatures were made from aerial photogrammetry, cleaned up for 3D printing and offer a unique perspective of the layered density and landscape of these cities.

    On their website, they offer the complete model of Manhattan (including installation), of 239 tiles. This is almost definitely marketed toward businesses as a display feature. I'm sure it costs $20-30k. Even if they give a discount for buying that much, its probably a few days to install it, so that probably wipes out any discount on the tiles. They also offer customization options for this big dip: including custom colors for tiles, larger titles, even different materials including metal. So much, much more than $20K is likely, depending on what the customer wants. They might also use higher resolution printing for those projects vs. the single tiles they sell.

    If they did that, all the blocks would be different sizes, making it difficult to frame since each one would have to be custom; not all city blocks are perfectly rectilinear either. Looks like they chose modularitiy. in favour of cutting off a few buildings.

    Looking at them from certain angles you can see whole strips of open air above the streets between the buildings...with crowded cities becoming a huge problem globally, I'm surprised no one has come up with a way to build in that space. Building and business owners, investors etc., partner up and redevelop, filling that space. Surely we have the technology now and now would be a good time to do it. Shit's going to get hectic fast in the future.

    Which makes the proposition even worse. If I cant even be enthused at 60% of the price, then why even bother? They should probably just do resin casts, which would lower the price to a fraction of that. *And* itd be more detailed to boot, provided the initial print has a good enough resolution.

  • @TheLordFisch

    They may not be able to print at that size or want to reduce losses for print failures. If you get a jam on one big part, it's all gone, but if one of the four smaller prints has a jam you lose 75% less material.

  • @ddewaard3265

    @ddewaard3265

    6 жыл бұрын

    guess the printing failures are their problem. when looking at a big print like that, you dont want to see 4 of those ugly lines crossing it. they could have gotten a bigger printer, you can have some 40x40cm printers for somewhere around 5-600 dollars now, and they can easily deliver the printquality of these prints... 75 dollars for the small ones is just a ripoff if done in fdm at this quality. I'm annoyed my printer prints at the quality seen in this video, i would be pissed if i had to pay 75 dollars for it! also, its not like its all the labour costs that go into them, they already had the files, printing material would cost like 10 dollars max and handling and printing costs another 25 or so, probably less
