Should you visit The Masai Mara without The Migration?

The Great Migration is the big draw card for The Masai Mara Photo Safari experience but what if you travelled to the iconic park when the big herds of wildebeest and zebra are not in residence? Will travelled to the Masai Mara in February to show you why you should consider this time of year!
The Masai Mara is an amazing National Reserve and we could argue that it is an excellent photo safari destination for most of the year and not just during the Great Migration around September.
We offer hosted safaris in both September and February. If you are interested in joining us then here are the links to those particular safaris.

We were there last August. Seeing the Crowned Cranes in this video is tempting to think about a February trip. We missed on them when we were there.

Hi William, I am lucky to be able to visit Masai mara many times as I live in the region and have been to the area all times of the year but tend to be before r after the rains. Quite agree that there are many great opportunities to visit outside of the migration where there are fewer visitors but with great sightings. Looking forward to seeing if the Narok County attempts to manage numbers through the Park fee increases has the desired impact. Just took a family member to the Mara for their first ever safari and it was epic, Cheetahs, several different leopard sightings including a kill, elephants, herbivores, hyenas, three different lion prides etc. The smaller creatures and bird life were also fun to watch, banded mongoose, reptiles etc. I had the privilege of doing the Pangolin long stay Chobe trip in January which was exceedingly good value and also a fantastic and different experience. Pangolin are a really excellent company that should be on every wildlife photographers bucket list.

August, it was a bit crowded but that's OK, I loved the non-migration sightings just as much. Vistas are unreal! Weather was perfect too.

I've been several times in the Masai Mara, in August, September, December and this year in February and it is always amazing! We saw a lot of different animals, every day lions. We had no rain in February but the grass was a bit long due to havy rainfall in December and January.

We just returned from a 3 week safari starting in North Kenya at Somboro and ending at the Crater in TZ. The Mara was fabulous, we saw every animal from large and small carnivore to a family of Bat eared Foxes and every thing in between. The rains had stopped around March 1 and we didn’t have any moisture until March 18, which allowed us to have blue sky and clear nights for drives. Our Maasai guides were able to show us the whole animal package and their culture.

So far I've only been to the Mara in early June. Personally I'm not fond of crowds, so I figured beginning of dry season just before it starts to get a bit crazy was right for me. Still had plenty of sightings, Lions are Leopards gain lots of attention. It can interfere a little, when vehicles are constantly trying to get a better position. Overall still amazing and exceeded expectations, cant wait to return again
