Yeah I rode around on a rear tyre that had a mushroom plug in it for about 6 months and I'm still here to talk about it.

When I used to commute into London I picked up a puncture in a new tyre with only 50 miles on it. Got it plugged and rode 6000 miles by which time it was worn out anyway. No issues. Biggest problem is finding a dealers that are happy to do the repair.

I made a video about using tire sealant and it works great. In usa we don't gave a standard for repairing tires at all. The tire is assumed to be unfixable and we are risking something if we use a plug. Ride on tire sealant works fine. For reference, there is a guy named moonfleet41 in britain and he does repairs with sealant.

I've used loads of the stick type plugs. Done thousands of miles on them and never had one fail. And only ever had one hole that was too big for them, so I patched it from the inside.

Don't you have to use the stick type play/patches from the inside always ?

Used to pick up nails all the time on my R1 (City commute) had several plugs in several tyres. No problem at all and that's a seriously quick machine. Scaremonger's are either naive or money to burn!

Would I plug a tire on a bike that goes 300km/h ? The answer is no ! Would I plug a tire if I were a millionaire ? The answer is no ! Instead I had a service truck with you in it on a golden salary following me around all the time..... But I am poor and so I plug and luck or skill never had an issue yet.

Below is my experience copied and pasted from the forum i use . August 2017 About a month ago the Viffer's rear tyre picked up one of Screwfix's finest. Reluctant to bin an almost new tyre i looked at the various fixes and went with PuntureSafe (a liquid sealant) which used to be known as 'Ultraseal'. (cost £16 off ebay) The main reason i chose Punture-safe was because it claims to be a permanent fix for the life of the tyre, unlike the plugs ect. and also there is no speed restriction. (Punture-safe claim 150mph tested) The other thing i don't like about the 'plug type' of fix is that in order to fit them you've got to first make the hole bigger! turning what was a semi sealing slowish puncture into a rapid deflation situation should the plug ever let go, never mind the additional damage caused to the cords and ply by enlarging the hole. Because i got the puncture before installing the sealant (Most install it as a preventative) i simply added the required amount through valve stem and spun the tyre up (easy to do with a centre stand) then inflated it. And up it has remained with no air loss what so ever for 600 miles. Punture-safe say you can add it 'post puncture'. Riding with it... At first i was a little paranoid it would let go / go down... but after a couple of weeks of absolutely no air loss my confidence in the product grew and now ride in my usual manner of 70 - 80 and on the odd occasion 90+ No air loss No vibration Won't freeze (tested a sample in the freezer) Permanent fix. Washes away with water come tyre change time. I change my own tyres so wont't be pissing off the tyre fitter... apparently some places charge an extra ten quid if they know its in the tyre!!!! (any old excuse to money grab) Will i use it again? Only if i have a puncture... once this tyre is spent i'l be fitting a new one with just air installed :)

Do you have to remove any backing/cover material from the plug before you put it in ? Is there something on there to protect the vulcanising solution that is on the plug ?

Here in South Africa the same no mandatory regs around the tire plugs but the insurance industry when reviewing after an incident will make a decision if they would honor any claims due to a faulty plug repair etc

There's a few tyre sealant things similar to Slime stuff that claim to plug tyres with high speed constraints (unlike the 50 MPH temporary plug limits) and consider themselves to be permanent for the life of the tyre, have you had any experience with these?

If you know how to repair tyres properly and know how to use the glue it won't fail, I have fixed loads of bike tyres but I have learned through trial and error not to use mushroom plugs on them. The plugs aren't so bad on the hard touring tyres but when you get in to sports touring tyres they can be so soft that the rubber stalk can be hard enough to destort the tyre round it and I have seen the ribe grind through the band's In the tyre (knackering it) because your trying to open the hole out big enough to get the stalk through it. I have only ever seen bad repairs (not mine!) fail. It is surprising how many tyre fitters don't know how to do it properly and generally these are the ones that refuse to fix them. The only tyres I won't repair are track/race tyres as I'm not so sure the repair will take the sustaind heat - low tyre pressure and speed.

HELL yes! Because the TIRES ALWAYS go flat right AFTER you buy A NEW one dammit! So I have had to buy ANOTHER one! Now I’m D O N E doing this! BECAUSE THE TIRE COSTS $240!!!! So then I have to buy ANOTHER $240 TIRE? No WAY!!! So I purchased a Tyer Puncture Repair kit that inserts a mushroomed sized plug into the Tire! I have a Z rated tire. Furthermore when I replace my rear tire. I replace the front tire too! Yeah dealer waited till I drove all the F-way home to call me about not repairing the tire. So I had to pay the Bastard! Because I took the dam tire OFF! Screw the dealer!

If it's in the 25% wide gap from the centre of the tyre, there are no problems with just plugging and inflating. You can ride happily on that until you need to replace the tyre. Anything else is only a temporary repair and it would need replacing asap
