I've watched SEVERAL videos about jack plates, and this has to be the BEST explanation. I wish you would have also explained how engine tilt and the jack plate could work together. (Maybe you have already.)

Best video on hydraulic jack plates. One question how do they do with the hydrofoil?

I have a little 13 ft Dell Quay Dory (Unsinkable, English Whaler) with 50hp Johnson 2 stroke. It was the tender to my big boat, 41 ft Chris Craft Commander (virtually every marina and dinghy dock limits tenders to 12 feet but for some reason they never balk at a 13 ft Whaler). I had to rebuild the transom when I bought it (someone had adjusted the transom height by screwing a 2x4 to the top, of course water ran down the screws until it rotted the whole transom) so when I rebuilt it I built the transom to the exact height for the 50 hp Johnson I bought for this boat, so the cavitation plate was even with the bottom of the boat. It seems to me that one reason for having a jack plate is because the transom is not at the optimal height. The motor has 3 adjustments to set the position of the motor relative to the angle of the transom. I have tried all 3 settings. If I didn't have trim/tilt I would have set the motor in the most upright position. This would have made it take longer to get up on plane but run better once on plane. I discovered that with the motor tilted back (prop forward) the prop sits more under the boat. The force vector is more up towards the bottom of the boat rather straight forward. This forces the stern up and the bow down very quickly and allows for getting up on plane the fastest possible. The boat won't run fast this way but it will run on plane at the lowest possible speed 10,11 knots. Once up on plane or as it's going up on plane if I trim it out it runs at 21 knots at 4600 rpm all day. I can pull U turns at 20+ knots and it spins right around solid as can be slowing to about 18 knots but never breaking free. I still want to put a jack plate on it for 2 reasons. 1 run this boat in lots of shallow water in rivers with rocks and sunken trees. I am thinking that being able to raise the motor up would protect my skeg and props which have been getting dinged pretty regularly. When I was in the Keys this wasn't an issue because skinny water usually has a sand bottom. The second reason is that I can tell the difference at idle when I walk forward. The motor raises out of the water and runs better. Also, like any boat, when you jump up on plane quickly the stern squats. This means you need to have more water under the stern to get on plane or you need to have a jack plate to raise the motor so it doesn't hit bottom. The main hold up to buying a jack plate is I am wondering if even with only a 4" setback if I will need to buy longer steering cables and essentially redo all my controls. Does anyone know if a 4" setback requires longer cables? Thanks for any input on anything I might have missed about installing using a jackplate

Got the first part. It lifts you up on plane. But how does it help get motor deeper down in water. And in rough water keeping nose up. ? No Jake plate keep nose up with trim set , back? What size set back? Jack plate do you have on you Aluminum boat? I’m looking to add a manual Jack Plate to my 1870 Triton aluminum. Thus the reason for asking my question. Thanks

Blat, why not use trim? I understand 1/8 jack plate adjustments, as you explained. Most boaters want it in for rivers in Louisiana rivers, or low water sand barge environment. Show us a benefit please. I have a lot that want it and end up burning engines because they are focused on the drive and stop paying attention to the temp. It seems a 1800-2800 add on that folks want but are not ready to be that dialed in for and understand it.

What prop are you running?

Great info, I don’t have a hydraulic jack plate, it’s mechanical, when I hit top speed at 65mph and I’m trimmed up my boat fishtails. If I lower my plate would that give me more mph and less fishtailing at that speed?

Thanks for the questions. Sent it over to our Service Manager and this was her response: Not enough info here to accurately answer. I need boat info, engine info, jack plate set back info, rpms at wide open throttle, prop make and pitch and water pressure at wide open throttle. BUT……. Generally no. If he lowers the plate he will lose speed. Try a half inch and see. If by fishtailing he mean chine walking then lowering the jack plate should help a little but you’ll lose speed too. Hope that helps!

@@BucksIsland Good answer. Sounds like there is too much boat out of the water or more specifically enough chine in the water to stabilize the stern so there's nothing holding the boat on line. Small direction changes make motor push stern from side to side. A flat bottom boat will do the same thing. Could be hull design. Modified vee hull with flatter stern, (not enough dead rise) and too much motor might do this too. Not all boats are designed to go that fast safely. 65 mph is getting up there if the hull is not designed for it. I've been in some Action Marines doing more than 80 plus and they get scary when they start chine walking. I've been in boats with 25, 26 degree dead rise and at that speed they barely raise your heart beat. One thing is for sure. What he is describing is a boat barely in control. I would not be concerned about losing speed if I were him.

I’ve seen people say they don’t have a “hydraulic” jack plate on their boat, is there just a regular jack plate that doesnt use a hydraulic cylinder or do some boats just not have jackplates

Some are Hydraulic. Some electric. Some are manual, so you would use a socket to raise and lower. Some are fixed, so you mount the motor where you want and the plate just gives you more options. And many boats just don’t have one. So the motor mounts right to the transom.

I have an older boat , i am doing a few things to up grade it to make it the best boat it can be. I am wondering I have a 17FT carolina skiff center console with a johnson 48 special on it would a Jack plate be to heavy for my boat and would it truly be beneficial? the boat is in pretty good condition hull wise. TIA.

Thanks for the question! From our Service Manager - "We don’t tend to deal with a large about of the 17ft Carolina Skiffs here. However, I don’t think it would be overly advantageous to put a jack pate on that rig. The performance benefits aren’t really there. If it were my boat I’d put the money into cooler electronics." Obviously that assumes you don't already have all the electronics and trolling motor accessories you want. Hope that helps!
