I agree with everything you said to be honest! But i'm noticing a lot of people are ignoring or not even noticing the fact that the score system is removed from this remake. And its kind of a bummer since I think that added towards the challenge of the GBA version. It wasn't just getting all the collectibles but rather doing it and in a fast time. So the remake will definitely be a lot easier in general.

That is really weird that the remake has the scoring system removed. That was like the only reason I would replay levels. It sounds like this may just be a one and done kind of game in that case since there seems to be no real incentive to replay a level once it is complete.

Great call out. Interesting decision to remove the scoring. I haven’t seen it in the demo or in any of the footage so far

@@mattb6522 even though they may have removed the score system that the GBA version had, they pretty much gave it a replacement in the form of the time attack mode, unlocked after beating the final boss in both the main worlds and plus worlds. I mean I’m sure we all wonder why they couldn’t have kept their original score system alongside the new addition of time attack, but at least to me, it doesn’t bother me at all. And at least the time attack mode does add some replayability

Why do some effects look better on GBA, like when you collect mini Mario’s?

This remake completely neutered the original game's challenge. In the original, you had to score x amount of points, beast the level as quickly as possible (for max time bonus points), collect all 3 presents, and reach the Mini Mario without dying to get the score star. In the remake, you just have to grab the 3 presents and finish the level. Doesn't matter how many lives you lose or how much time you have leftover.

Thank god! This makes the puzzles in the game much more manageable! In the OG, I’m correctly at 89 score stars and am trying to deal with the Expert levels before the final DK level of the plus worlds.

They reduced the difficulty by making retrys take no lives too. Also Casual Mode makes it even easier with the following changes: • infinite time _(was 120 on GBA and 100 in the GB original)_ • key respawn timer at 15 seconds _(was 12 on GBA and 8 in GB original)_ • number of enemies is reduced, sometimes as much as halved • enemies that normally kill Mario on contact just knock him onto his butt for several seconds • there are now checkmark flags mid-level • Mario can suffer up to 5 hits/deaths per life per stage, respawning at the checkmark flags • some conveyor belts, enemy movement, and enemy projectiles have reduced speed I plan on buying the game and seeing how things work out because I want to play the game with a non-gaming relative, but I'm *really* hoping the timer is available in the options or unlockable or something.

@@zackrader1906 The strict timing and push for level mastery is one of the things I loved about these games. I'm not against having the option to get rid of the timer and score system, but if there's really no way to enable it that genuinely sucks. They already have a Casual Mode, I would prefer if the baseline difficulty does not get needlessly toned down when they already added an easy mode.

I never played the original Mario versus donkey Kong on GBA and I’ve played the demo of the switch rebate and it’s awesome. I pre-ordered it awhile ago so I should be getting my copy at release and I can’t wait. I pre-ordered directly from Nintendo so I get the Mario versus donkey Kong keyring:

I've heard often the original game was the best in the series of Mario Vs Donkey Kong, never played the original, so this remake is how I'll play it. I've played the mini Mario ones and can tell it plays nothing like the demo.

I genuinely think the GBA version and it's very first original version,; _Donkey Kong '94 on the GameBoy,_ are among the best 2D Mario titles. I'm kinda miffed that the score tracking and timer are gone in this version because it makes getting a star on a stage ridiculously easy and kills the incentive to replay stages. Still excited to play multiplayer with someone special to me who isn't going to care about the lack of difficulty, but I don't know if this version is going to be able to hold my attention all the way through without the carefully crafted challenge that slowly taught the player control and stage mastery.

No you shouldn't. Play the original instead. Mario talking full sentences and gibberish is gone and replaced by generic voicelines like "Hey, wait !". Parts of the cutscenes are gone, mostly the parts where Mario shows more emotions than just happy and surprised, making him a lot more bland than he originally was. The score system is gone and the stars are ridiculously easy to get, which removes the challenge that the original gave to even the more experienced players. To get a star in the original, you had to get a high enough score, which required you to get all three gifts and finish the level fast enough. But if you die in the second part of the level, the time you had in the first half that was added to the second half's timer was gone. And without that extra time, you ain't getting enough points for the star. Also in the later levels, if you don't go through the absolute most optimal route without stopping, you ain't getting that star. I got all the stars in that game. It was challenging, but very fun. And for the more casual players, well you don't have to get the stars. That's what I did as a kid. I just went through the game without collecting the stars and I was fine with it. It was still a fun experience. Dying by falling from too high is gone as well, and now you can grab ropes after a handstand jump, which breaks parts of the intended way to solve some puzzles. They made this game significantly easier with everything I just explained, from the score system to the fall damage, and they then dared to add an "easier mode" to this already easier version of the original. It's stupid and makes this game boring for the experienced players. They also removed the various dying animations that changed according to the way you died, and Mario still interacting with the level when in his death animation. They removed some voicelines like him saying "let's-a-go" when unlocking a door and "Good job, little guy", when leading a Mini to the door in the Plus levels. Oh and they also removed the fun images you got after defeating a boss. A thing they could have done and that would have made me buy this game despite everything it removed is if they added a level editor. The original was meant to have one but it was cut. A good remake is supposed to keep the experience of the original but also improve it in some ways (Pokémon Oméga Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are good examples of that). Adding that cut level editor would have been a good way to do that. But of course a remake that removes all the charm, uniqueness, and challenge of the original couldn't improve on it in a meaningful way. Sure it has two new worlds, but it's not enough to make up for all the charm, uniqueness and challenge being removed for absolutely no reason. Sure it stays a fun game, but that's only because the original is a fun game. This remake is lame, and you should really play the original instead. It's a much more enjoyable experience for both casual players (which it doesn't consider to be babies that can't play games like the remake does) and experienced players (to which it offers a real challenge with getting all the stars thanks to the score system unlike in the remake). I said it once at the beginning, I'll say it again, play the original instead. Use emulation if you don't care about doing that. Don't waste 50 bucks on that dumb remake when getting the superior version that is the original will most likely cost less money. Also the modding/rom hacking scene for the original is inexistant, and I'd love to see more people get interested in it and experiment with it. Maybe restore the cut level editor for example since the remake can't do that.

If they wanted to sell it for more than $40 it should have included a stage builder and stage sharing system. The game is designed in blocks already, it would have been so easy to give us that... especially since they removed the strict score and stage timers that forced you to really master the levels to earn stars. 😮‍💨
