Wrong. There's diff types lab grown. GIA has ways of telling them apart. A man made pure carbon diamond (HPHT) are just as expensive. The process is extremely difficult. You can have a real Ferrari or a knock off. Both Ferrari's right?

They're both diamonds yes, but they're not identical. The inclusions are different for mined vs lab, many lab grown have growth strains, HPHT have blue nuance, CVD are generally brown and need a post growth treatment to improve the color. Lab diamonds are also generally type II a which extremely rare in natural so that's actually a dead giveaway they're not natural. They can also have weird fluoro that natural diamonds do not. So sure, they're both diamonds, but they are not identical. But I understand that sellers of lab stones want us to think they're identical, but it's just as much a marketing ploy as the crap De Beers preaches.

Bought a lab grown diamond. Very happy with it. No matter what, selling your diamond you get sooo much less than you paid. We took the extra cash and put it towards a down payment on a house. That is at least something that will most likely retain and grow in value.

I did the same! I used the extra 10k to buy a house back in 2017 when market was better. When buying natural you lose almost 40% of the costs of a diamond instantly while lab grown there is no sellback value but honestly who sells back an engagement ring?

Came here to either find this comment or state it myself. It's true that diamonds are not that rare. The value is in the criminally controlled supply chain. And that six months salary thing? Total bullshit. Also notice when Bonnie mentions future value, she'll give you 100%... on trade in. Not cash... trade in. Which means once you leave the store, your diamond isn't worth shit to anyone except her providing there is a future sale. Just buy something pretty for your Queen's finger that you can afford.

Definitely different to precious metal but if you have kids, you should buy a few for future use.

I advise people to look at the history of pearls. When people figured out how pearls were made and started to duplicate it, the prices of pearls crashed extremely hard. Pearls were once far more valuation than diamonds, now they're everywhere. Diamonds are next.

Lab is chemically, physically, optically the same as natural. It is designed and engineered in a lab, which to me is very impressive. I have been complimented across the room for my lab (I agree with optimizing the cut!)

Heres the thing - If you want to buy a lab diamond because its "cheaper" more power to you... If you prefer a natural diamond because its one of a kind and cant be duplicated.. that's great too. Its really nobodies business and Lab diamond buyers AND natural diamond buyers shouldn't make claims of one being better than the other. Just be happy with what you have.

Lab grown diamonds are literally duplicates. And natural diamonds are really common. So like.... What's unique about any given stone? Since you can't create or destroy matter, all matter is as old as the universe. So it's kind of a moot point to care how long carbon has been in a particular state. You can flush physical cash down the toilet while screaming I love you to your partner while beating the crap out of a poor person, because that's essentially the only difference between lab diamonds and natural

All diamonds look fucking the same to the naked human eye. I am absolutely here to judge - the rainbow fire to them is beautiful, but the usual white diamond I see everywhere is so boring, generic, and overpriced. Lab-grown all the way to me. Why bother with a blue diamond when there are stunning aquamarines at a much lower price? There are even more hardy gemstones, like sapphire, which are ranked pretty high on the Mohs Scale, are still gonna last too, despite the lesser durability compared to diamond. As long as you don't flush your gemstone down the toilet or throw it as hard as you can at a wall, your jewellery will last you a while regardless. The porous structure of rainbow opals is what gives that gemstone that beautiful, all-encompassing multi-colour effect - something diamonds of any kind, especially a natural one, could never hope to achieve You don't need jewellery insurance either as long as you do your own research online and ask experts, like Bonnie says here. I could buy a decent car for $10,000 AUD. What does it do? Take me places faster than public transport, plays music, has rear view cameras, safety prevention mechanisms like air bags and an automatic stop if you're going too fast and prevent a collision. You can customise it for an additional price, with a special paint job, get a personalised plate, open the sun roof, clear out rain with the wipers. What do diamonds do, on the other hand? Nothing. You can wear them, or bedazzle something with them, but they just take up space. Not all models of cars will have that, but you get the point, right? I say that even a constantly depreciating asset, like a car, is a more worthy purchase than any pretentious-ass natural diamond. I shall mention, yet again, so many other beautiful and genuinely rarer gemstones exist for so much less in price and are also of fantastic quality. I would only ever buy a diamond as an investment, because there's fuckall you can do with a diamond besides wear it. You can be a sheep and just buy natural diamonds because they're 'natural' or you can save money and add more colour to your life by buying lab grown diamonds and other coloured gemstones.

Or a better analogy to what you’re doing, scrapping the car for the retail value? No. Because you don’t buy a diamond at a jewelry store for the diamonds value. You buy the diamond, the mounting, the cost of labor to make that mounting set the diamond polish it and various other administrative costs you shoulder for not being able to do any of the things you’ve hired the jeweler to do for you. If you want to be able to buy a diamond and then sell it back for what you paid, go to the mines or a wholesaler and buy a 500ct lot like the rest of us. Until then, you have to pay your “I’m not willing to risk anything so I’d like you to risk it for me” tax.

Everyone I know prefers lab diamonds over mined diamonds but why is it that jewelers try to discourage the purchase of lab diamonds? This whole video insinuated that a $20,000 mined diamond is “better” than a $7,000 lab diamond without really getting into the specifics. All you really said was that the latter could be a “poor investment” and discussed unfavorable “long term value” but this is simply not relatable as 95% of millennials do not buy diamonds expecting to re-sell it. We look to the stock market for financial returns, not the ring we bought as a token of love. I felt that this video was not informative at all. If you feel up to it, I would be interested in a more detailed video that focuses on the true differences between the two rather than just talking about price and showing a short comparison video.

Honestly I agree. It’s hard to trust anyone because I feel everyone has slight bias. All I can say is don’t look at a natural diamond as a investment because you will be very upset. This is what I say” natural diamonds have a terrible resale value and for now lab diamonds don’t have any resale value.” If you ever get to the point of having to sale your natural diamond your relationship probably had no value. So either way you lose.

Mined diamonds that are mined ethically support the indigenous communities where these beautiful gems are found. I'm from Tanzania and I can't express how much mined Tanzanite has empowered local indigenous tribes who benefit from the jobs that the Tanzanite industry creates. I’ve been married 49 years and the big 50 isn’t far away! My wedding ring has a small very good quality diamond. I remember the jeweler brought out a bag of diamonds and poured them out in front of us! That many years ago quality was more important than quantity. But here’s the point I’m trying to make! I would never have considered trading my original diamond for any other diamond! Guess I’m overly sentimental! So it never mattered if my ring went up or down in value! Because it’s valuable to me!🥰

You failed to mention the only reason natural diamonds are rare is because De Beers controls the supply to keep prices high, you also failed to mention the ethics of diamond mining, the extreme poverty of the workers and the massive environmental pollution caused.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think about value when I'm looking at purchasing a diamond (specifically for an engagement ring). I'm not thinking about how I can get my money back for it in the future. I view it as lost money that I'll never get back and not as an asset so that removes the value proposition of getting an earth diamond for me. I'll save the money, or get a bigger and better quality lab diamond instead every time.

I made my wife a classic tennis bracelet using lab grown for her birthday back in November 2020. She has yet to take it off since. She loves it and it cost me about 70% less than had I used natural diamonds (I have my own workshop but the percentage saving is the same along the supply chain). So, for bang for bucks, lab grown are the winner by far.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) This newer technique enables scientists to grow synthetic diamonds using moderate temperatures (700°C to 1300°C) and lower pressures. Carbon-containing gas is pumped into a vacuum chamber, depositing onto a diamond seed and crystallizing as synthetic diamond. The eventual size of the diamond depends on the time allowed for growth. 💎 Synthetic diamonds are seeded with a very tiny diamond, probably industrial grade diamond in size. A good grade industrial diamond is used to produce a good grade synthetic diamond. As the carbon-containing gas deposits upon this diamond “ seed “ , the crystal grows and depending upon how long it is allowed to grow will decide it’s size and end result. A synthetic diamond starts it’s life with a real diamond “ seed “ and can be considered “ real “ for all intents and purposes. ☺️

Thank you for your videos. I have watched them all now😂. I have a 2ct natural champagne that I absolutely LOVE but for some reason I’m wanting a Colorless too😬. My husband says natural but I’m leaning towards lab. I just can’t justify spending that money on myself when we could donate it/save for our boys. I feel bad spending more as it is. Authentic diamonds are abundant. The price is inflated because only a few in comparison to the supply are released into the market. If the entire supply was released, diamonds would be worthless. Lab diamonds are equalizing this inflated market.

Good comparison and great info on lab-grown diamonds! I would like to point out some stuff not mentioned in the video though - buying a diamond engagement ring from a jeweler usually has a markup of around 300% (and can be as high as 1000%!). So you can't really say that buying a diamond at such a high mark-up is any kind of a good investment because you can never sell it privately for what you paid - or, very rarely anyway. Most consumers are grossly overpaying for natural diamonds. So at what point does it just become excessive enough to start looking at more reasonable options? Your video and comparison was so great that it really makes a good argument for lab-grown diamonds, when all things are considered.

One thing to note, in reply to babycakes. All Princess cut natural diamonds and all Princess cut CZs and lab grown Princess cuts leak light. This isn't a huge secret in the diamond business. The traditional round diamond is the top-of-the-heap sparkler. "Princess" cut sounds great to women, but it's a 1990s term meant to sell a particular cut. Women in the know reject Princess cuts. If you want a square-look diamond, go with the beautiful old Asscher cut or a cushion cut. This is no reflection on ms.babycakes. Surely she knew this and opted for the cut of her choice.

That video was not only incredibly well done but the entire process was very informative & helpful to those who are not only curious to the process but want to do it themselves. I have a large collection of gemstones & have always wanted to apprentice at a jewelers. I have many videos, books, & tools to start being a bench jeweler only for myself. Some of those tool, especially the flattening tool. I do have a few questions tho. What was the metal value? Was it white & yellow gold mixed & what kt. Of the metal. Also, why didn't you use Flux? I have subscribed & look forward to many more & will save them & watch over & over. The process makes much more sense in the way you made that ring. Becoming my own bench jeweler is my dream. Good info. I went with a 2.0 carat lab grown diamond for my fiancé. A few factors lead me to this here are my top three. 1. PRICE - the cost savings on a lab grown diamond and bang for your buck is attractive. I find an even greater price difference than discussed in this video between the lab grown and natural diamonds of equal quality ratings regarding the 4C's. 2. EMOTIONAL PURCHASE NOT AN INVESTMENT - My fiancé and I don't view an engagement ring as a financial investment. It seems like a sales trick to think of it as such, even with a natural diamond it's not exactly liquid or something you will want to ever part with provided the marriage lasts, and the cash value will likely always be a fraction of what was paid. It's an emotional purchase, pure and simple. If you wanted to make an investment then put the money in real estate or the stock market. 3. THE DE BEERS CARTEL - not a fan of how De Beers has maintained a grip on the diamond industry for years. They are a cartel and have manipulated markets for years not to mention the exploitation of labor. So I prefer not to support them directly with my purchase.

Same here. I went with a 1.5 Carat lab grown for my girlfriend. The saving difference between the lab grown and natural were insane. Lab grown allowed me to afford a bigger and nicer diamond without breaking the bank. Spending 4K is a lot better and more reasonable than spending 25K.

Diamonds will always be a demand, even if they aren’t “rare” like people say etc, there are thousands, millions of girls out there that hope to experience being engaged and receiving a diamond ring. Man made are duplicates, but it’s what people prefer or how much people are willing to spend. Man made or natural who really cares?? Except the girl that is wearing it of course. There’s pros and cons for both I suppose, but I know many girls who would put up their hand for a natural over a man made, but again there is nothing wrong with that.

FYI The mark up in the jewelry business is significant-so she probably bought her $20k vvs2 wholesale for $12k. So if you needed to sell that diamond to a jeweler expect to get 75% of wholesale , or $9k. If you notice she says she will give you your purchase price on a trade in upgrade.

Yeah that’s what I see in a lot of videos , it’s like more clean softer while the labs hit real hard almost like too much sparkle , not a lot more but it’s noticeable to me and others who have been seeing more and more comparisons

The only reason there is a limit on supply is thanks to De Beers

Lab grown diamonds are beautiful. I have mined diamond in wedding rings and things given to me in family and recently in the last couple of years I got a lab grown diamond and I absolutely love it. It’s just as beautiful as the mined type. No difference. I also have mossianite earrings I received as gift I love as well

I have researched the lab grown diamonds for over 10 years now. I just purchased my first lab grown diamond ring for a special teenager as a gift -, H color/VS1 clarity is the standard for this brand. It's a tiny .10 diamond in rose gold. The chemical and physical properties are the same as a natural mined diamond! It's a diamond, and it's beautiful, even it's a hard concept to accept at first. LOL! The scintillation of the diamond is amazing, and It cost me 40% less than the natural mined diamond. Whatever diamond one gets, enjoy!!

Yes. A diamond whether it be natural or lab grown is meant to be enjoyed for the person wearing it, and both are the same material and won't wear away like cubic zerconia. Either way you choose you are doing good, and honestly I am all for technology helping me save money for a change because I feel like I usually spend more with technology lol.

There are companies selling cubic zirconia and marketing them as lab grown diamonds. Always test your diamonds on a diamond tester no matter what company you buy them from. This has saved me from getting duped.

Both of them are great! CVD is a little bit expensive than HTHP! I choose HTHP, how about you?

Can you give a clarification for the long term value on smaller carats. Prices below 2 ct diamonds have literally not changed for the past 5 years they go up and down and 5 years ago the price was almost exactly the same as it is now

NO your not. You listened too a sales pitch. Leaves out much of the technical info , All the down side. They're worthless as compared to GOOD qlty Nat.Very little of HPHT CVD mtrl is IF wht brilliant untreated. The tiny portions that are? Are nearly as expensive as genuine. They are NOT pure carbon containg many trace elements( boron nitrogen ect) do NOT have the luster of Natural diamond. I'll sell a customer what ever they want. At my end the profit margin is about the same. I won't lie, or tell you 1/2truth.

Last time I checked no one will sell their wedding ring so unless you are going in for a purpose of investment, it isn’t necessary to include this thought in your purchase. A natural vs lab are identical and actually lab is better because you can afford a nicer cut and color. They are the same and you couldn’t tell the difference. It’s like a natural birth vs a test tub baby. Still result in a person, you couldn’t tell the difference of how they were created.

tinge can be seen with loupe. compare no milky with a milky one on loupe. browness can also be comapred with the white one. just ask for no BGM.

@@headphonic8 Right!! Everyone knows when it comes to Jewelers and diamond dealers they all give the same accurate information.

I'd love for lab-grown diamonds to get dirt cheap. I'd be happy owning a 4-5 carat one. With jewely you rarely get what you paid by reselling it, but I still think prices are too high for lab grown stones.

I grew up watching the movie blood diamond, so I'm very happy with moissanite and it holds up over time.

So what would be the best cut for a lab diamond ?

There are a couple of points you missed regarding value. If you buy one of the 99% of natural diamonds that are not investment pieces, you'll be losing money if you want to sell it. If for example, you buy a 5ct natural stone for $50k, it's going to be worth half that if you want to sell, so a $25k loss. If you buy a lab stone for $5k, you'll still lose 1/2, but that's only a $2.5k loss - so which was the better investment? The other point about future value is that lab grown diamonds are not common in the high street yet. When the average consumer discovers that they can buy a chemically and physically identical stone for far less money (or one that is far bigger) for their budget, it's very likely to start pushing down demand for natural stones as they lose potential customers to the lab stone market. This may have a seriously adverse affect on the natural stone market and their value, so I would not count on the retained value of natural stones.

I’ve made it into a necklace and got an 8 carat flawless lab grown diamond ring instead. OVERJOYED. Will NEVER buy a natural diamond again.

@@cuddledog142 my original ring was from the famous Harry Winston collection, purchased at $98,000 (incl taxes California) after so long, they did not allow “trade ins”. Pathetic. We where told to auction, however our reserve was never met (several auctions later). Brokers offered $45-50,000. I imagine a much smaller stones are far less in value. In the end, I kept it. It’s a sentimental time piece for me.

As a jeweler of 15 years, we started selling labs a few years ago. It all comes down to your level of wealth. If you're normal income, spend 5k get a 1ct or bigger lab grown & solid mounting. It will look great and your girl won't get self conscious or feel diamond envy towards her friends. If you have some excess wealth get the natural. It will indeed always have good resale value just be prepared to spend market price.

@@skimmer521 How is he lying? If you did your research when buying a diamond, you should immediately have a resale value of 70-80%, which is better than most jewelry. Now, if you blindly bought some subpar diamond from some jeweler and over paid for it, then yes, it will not have a good resale value.

So is there a way for a professional like you to tell the difference? Thank I definitely only will love real diamonds 💎

I saw a documentary on De Beers diamond monopoly the other day. There are plenty of diamonds around naturally; they just control production to jack up the price. By the way, if you accidentally mix up a lab and natural diamond of the same size and quality. What are you gonna do?

Sure, historically speaking, natural diamonds have retained its value. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will continue to retain its value in the future. Lab diamonds and the technological improvements with creating them is accelerating. As long as you’re getting what’s being advertised from your jeweler, that’s great. Buying diamonds are a luxury, but I prefer lab diamonds and investing those savings into crypto lol

Hi please help! i am wondering my sister just got 3.60gr diamond ring, i google it, it says around 18karat/ carat? And price around $4.000 australian dollar and i went to jewelry shop yesterday and i like one of the ring, cost $4.500 aus dollar, but it says 0.95 Carat TW Of Diamonds In 14kt White Gold, not even 18ct, so i mean why are they different? Unless it’s a multi generational heirloom (long hold) you lose more money trying to resell a natural diamond because of the upfront costs in comparison to lab diamonds of the same quality. IMO the difference in money would be better invested in physical gold (can be artificially produced) or shares in the S&P500. Gold and Silver also goes up in value historically over time and unlike natural diamonds it precious metals can’t be lab grown. This is the main reason that I usually buy gold and silver fine jewelry that has more pricing due to the weight and Grade of the metal rather than gem content

Anyway they are exactly the same chemically, at atomic level, despite the fact that lab ones are always more clear, free of inclusions, not cracked, much lower in price and more ideal in any physical, chemical, aesthetic or economical way.

The lab grown diamonds have engraving along the sides, but yeah they would be basically indistinguishable otherwise There are tests that gemologists can do to test which is which. Natural diamonds tend to form slightly differently, and it's not something that you can tell without specific equipment. I can tell you for free that lab grown tend to give you better quality diamond options because they don't have contaminants in the stone, but the cut and quality does vary

So I bought an engagement ring...got a diamond certificate for a diamond, and turns out the diamond I actually got us if lesser quality, and obviously not laser engraved with the diamond I purchased. What do I do now?
