The frustration Elle has about this Caitlin Clark narrative resembles the frustration NBA fans feel about the narrative that WNBA players are underpaid and the NBA should do more to support them. Look at how vets like LeBron, Durant and Kyrie have heaped praise on Anthony Edwards during this "next face of the league" narrative.

Not sure what the aggression is about. Sounds a little over the top. The silence from the vets is also deafening and yes there is hate from a number of them either passively or actively. Just do a quick search online. But they are all benefiting from her as we speak, the charter planes, the viewerships, the shoe deals….stop ittttt No one is saying worship her but people are saying there is not much embrace from women in general. Lots of men watch wnba now because of her. that needs to be highlighted and praised by all of them since they are benefiting from it. And to suggest no one talked about Lebron in that sense when he came into the league is quite literally ridiculous on its head.

Caitlin is a rookie. She's supposed to get rookie treatment, regardless of the media spotlight. It's a part of the game that's just going to happen. She shoots too well to go scoreless, but teams are going to make her earn it all seaaon; especially as a PG. That's the double-whammy position because she's gotta run the team based on what her coach wants, but she's also gotta adjust to the pro game with each team she faces. It's not supposed to be easy, and no vet should make it easy. Angel Reese is getting solid numbers, but she's not close to the threat she was at lsu. These are full grown women with years of pro conditioning, strength & experience, but she's holding her own in key moments. Cam Brink has really low numbers, but she's making a defensive impact. You have to be encouraged with Caitlin hitting 3's, Angel on the offensive glass, and Cam's defense. They're going to be ok, despite everyone not named Caitlin being totally ignored by the stupid wnba.

I like Elle but her comparing Lebron coming into the NBA & Caitlin coming into the WNBA are apples to oranges. The NBA was an already established/growing league that was looking for its next superstar after the Jordan era had ended. Caitlin was joining a league that had players flying commercial airplan flights. If you really want to see the WNBA grow, you should be happy that a female basketball player has the popularity that Caitlin Clark has because her popularity will lift the popularity of the other women in the league and grow the WNBA to new heights.

It was a similar situation, a highly touted college athlete with a big deal from Nike, huge galleries and so on. No one owes her support or anything else, they are fighting for their own legacy. She'll have to go out there and earn it like any other athlete through her performance.

Exactly. I admit, i begin watching the WNBA because of CC and Angel. And I love that she's going through the struggle because it shows just how competitive the game is, and it builds character. The media has to stop saying that players are "hating" because theirs no evidence of that. And the disrespect Jewell Lloyd received after her 32-point game, from the reporters' questions being about CC, is what creates a toxic league. Her team gets better every game. CC gets better every game. Respect the process because shoe deals and charter flights mean nothing during the game. That being said, I'll be tuning in tonight against the sparks 🙂

As a new fan of the WNBA, we watch what is happening and see that Caitlin is 90% of the reason people are now watching the WNBA. Sellouts, 2 million plus viewers, jersey sales better than the Dallas Cowboys- it’s all due to Clark. Not the rookie class or the incremental growth of the WNBA. You need to just say you understand that and not try to provide an alternative answer. Because the options other than it’s due to Clark are wrong. And for the new fans, we like Clark’s style of play. The rest of the WNBA is pretty boring. High School boys games are more interesting. But Caitlin shoots like Steph and passes like Magic so we enjoy watching greatness. If Clark leaves so do I and so do millions of fans. It may not be fair but it is the reality that we see. It has nothing to do with race, it’s all about the Logo 3’s and, as Elle said, the Mahomes like dimes she drops on teammates from the other end of the floor. She is amazing! Give her her flowers and thank her for Charter flights.

Unfortunately Reese"s game on the NBA TV apparently only drew 60,000 or so. Those numbers have to be wrong. Reese, Brink, Martin etc the real draws from the class of 24. Not to mention Reese has far less turnover's then CC does. I just don't get it. I'm sure the math is wrong and will be corrected in the near future.

Well, in a recent LA Times column, Nicole Melton of the University of Massachusetts and podcaster Jemele Hill were quoted as questioning whether Caitlin's race and sexuality factor into Caitlin's popularity. Caitlin Clark- charismatic, well spoken, straight ( oh yes white), never says a bad thing off court about any detractors. Joins the weakest team in the league that has difficulty making lay ups. Initially, three blow out losses against top teams. Then two exciting last minute losses. then a thrilling last minute win with her as PG going 11,10,8,4,1 with laser passes and two key game winning 3s near the finish. Meanwhile a league that many didn’t know existed is playing to sellout crowds.

I find it odd that we don’t hear commentators talking about what puts people in awe of CC. It’s because we want to see her logo 3’s. Yes she’s a baller in other areas too, but those long 3’s are what does it. It’s the big thing that made/makes her stand out. Other players are good yes, but they fail to have a “one thing” that seams supernatural. It’s just like watching a Mike Tyson fight. There’s lots of great fighters, but everyone wanted to see his next big knockout. That was his “one thing” and it made him stand out from the rest. Many athletes have great moments, but not many have a “one thing” consistently like CC’s long 3’s, Steph’s crazy 3’s, MJ’s long dunks and fade aways, Tyson’s KO’s, Birds Shooting/Passing, and Magic’s hook shot.

Certainly Sheryl Swoopes hated on Caitlin Clark on Gilbert Arenas podcast. She said she was 25 years old playing against 18 year olds, that she took 40 shots per game, and the she an extra season to set the all time scoring record (all three of which weren't true). In terms of current WNBA players, I would say they have hated on her, but a lot of them have basically been urging some brakes be applied to the hype train. I am thinking of comments by players like Diane Tarusi and Lexi Brown, but I think lots of players have made comments. And while current WNBA players haven't hated on her, she has got a decent amount of hate from the media and that includes Elle Duncan who is making ad hominem attacks like calling her a "white princess". And Caitlin is elevating the league in a way even Lebron didn't elevate the NBA. I bought the WNBA league pass this year because of my intrigue with her. She is arguably the greatest women's college player of all time who plays an exciting style of basketball. If she was just a really 6'6 center people wouldn't care about her because that would be boring.

I think Elle is right...to an extent. You see some negativity from WNBA players, but not much. I don't, however, agree you can just blow off social media as a non-factor. Social media is a place where hate and overall negativity can coalesce and magnify to the point it feels like a social force. It's the reason most popular artists, athletes, and others subject to broad social scrutiny, tend to avoid it. That constant avalanche of negativity eventually takes a toll. Haters are going to hate, and social media gives them a bullhorn. While Elle may rant about it, I do think it's helpful when high profile stars like James and Barkley speak up and at least try to bring the temperature down a bit.
