If they take two seats, pay for two seats. It's simple. Or lose weight. Pick one.

Olivia Piper Robeck I agree. They are saying give them two seats. Well that is not fair for everyone else. Why should everyone else not have the extra space either. I travel and depending where I am going and how packed I think the flight may be I often buy two seats. I am thin but I hate the three seat rows. When I buy two seats I am assured to have that free middle seat. The fun part is when they have tried to fill the seat and they have argued that the second seat is not guaranteed. They always back down though.

The problem is that many of these obese people only buy one seat and then basically dare the airline to say something and "discriminate" against them. So they are being jerks by doing this.

If they can’t fit in one seat then they should pay for a second seat or the whole row. They shouldn’t get a right to a free second seat. There was an episode on My 600 Pound Life where this woman was almost 700 pounds and bought the whole row knowing she wouldn’t fit in one or two seats. Just like she was considerate knowing her weight problem, other obese people should do the same.

My mum works for an airline and this problem actually exists and is easily solved. I don’t remember exactly but I think she said the overweight person has to call the airline in advance and reserve a second seat, for which they WILL be charged extra but not as much as a whole other plane ticket would be. Which makes sense because with the ticket you also indirectly pay for airport security, boarding, food on the plane etc. and even if you need two seats those things still only apply for one person. So it makes sense that they pay extra, but not as much as another ticket would cost

if he uses the space of two seats, he should pay for two seats. I feel bad for the guy; however, if he was going to buy a car, he would have to buy something bigger and more expensive to accommodate his size. That is the price you pay if you are bigger. Same for clothes. When I travelled with my small child, I had to buy him a seat and he took up 1/4 of the seat!!!

Jenny Feng They can and will serve people of all sizes, bigger people just pay more. Disability is something that may not be helped. More than likely a person can help/control their weight. It should not get to the point of taking up two seats. If you take up two seats, you pay for two seats. Nothing personal it's just business.

All I know is that they should be treated equally as any other person right? I totally see the business side of it too but I'm not wanting to know the business side but more like the law side of it. Would he still be charged twice if he is protected by the law if he was certified as a disabled person? I'm really bad at explaining things, hopefully you understood me.

Airlines do cater to people of all sizes. If your obesity qualifies as a disability then you are supposed to make that known when you purchase your ticket and the airline will make special accommodations for you. Otherwise the airline expects you to fit into the seats provided to everyone else.

Alexis Jaussen Yes in most cases it's the persons own fault, mine was. In my case I was lucky to have great support from friends and family. It is not an easy journey and the bigger you are the harder it is to get started and keep the motivation, especially if the weight causes depression. I didn't go all "biggest loser" but rather made small obtainable goals to build momentum and motivation, and about 18 months later I reached my goal weight.

My ex was so tall he had to travel in first class to have enough leg room. You cant help how tall you are but in most cases you can help your weight. Thats how it is, you have to pay more if youre not a "regular" sized person. I think the easiest way to know if someone needs two seats is simply to ask if they can fit in a seat measuring X" across, or have a "sample" seat available to check against.

  • @dollhouseq1530

I was thinking the same thing about a 'sample seat.' I mean, these people know when they book that they're not going to fit; but I say if they refused to book 2 seats hoping to get away with it, then they are the ones who have to wait if a flight is overbooked, and they will have to pay for that second seat.

for the sake of this discussion, the problem is the individual's size. My point is that by asking people to fill out a questionnaire asking if they have a major medical problem, first, they're asking people who are obese enough to need a second seat to admit to it (which, we already know, they sometimes don't or we wouldn't be having this convo). Secondly, some people just don't see their own obesity as a 'major medical problem.' Of course it's a major medical problem in terms of one's health, and in terms of the current rates of obesity in developed countries; the comment was in relation to trying to figure out how to solve the issue of size vs. seat.

Hell I wasn't that big when the seat belt didn't fit around me (215lbs). Hell I saw another girl who was nowhere near being big who couldn't fit either. Luckily I got to ride it 2 years b4 this incident

Delishea Penicaud It does not matter if the airline is highly paid. They are a business and grey deserve to be paid for their service. It may suck but if they do not fit they should be required to buy the other seat. I know some people that are obese. They always buy a second seat when they fly. They do it for their comfort in part. They mainly do it though for the people that would be in the same row as them. They always say life is not fair and life is not guaranteed to give you what you want.

For most of my life, I weighed 160 to 180lbs, I was lucky in that my build and job kept me skinny. But I traveled on many flights, buses, and trains where I was squeezed into half of my seat. It even happened at a theatre one time. I hated it and absolutely agreed that if you took more than your space assigned you should pay for the extra, rather than have a smaller passenger pay for the space you are using. Remember it is not the airline paying for it, it is the passenger sitting beside you. Then in 1991, I was involved in a bad work accident which required several surgeries and eventually disability against my wishes. For many years I was able to keep my weight below 200lbs, the several years ago my weight started climbing. Primary causes are an inability to exercise regularly, ill health and poor eating due to a lack of income. I am now 225lbs and would overflow a bit on an airline seat, due to the size of them, therefore if I plan to fly I will purchase two seats. Although I can fit into a bus or train seat I will have problems with an airline seat. Plus I have to consider the fact that the traveling vibrations are extremely painful for me, so I want to be as comfortable as possible. So my opinion is that no matter what your income if you encroach on another passenger's space you must pay for the extra seat required. This applies to me even living on a small disability income, as I can't afford the two seats I just don't fly. I certainly do not expect the airlines to pay for it, as we are ultimately placing the additional cost on the other passengers. Not their and should never be their problem. If you are too big for a single seat then pay the cost of being too big, sorry just the way I feel, after being on both sides of the issue.

I am 5' 10", but my butt has widened a bit with the weight gain. My problem is that due to the health problems, I can't handle being squeezed on a seat any longer. To be honest because of the health problems, it is highly unlikely that I will ever fly again. Since the accident I have flown several times, and each time finished the flight barely able to walk due to the pain. So buying the 2nd seat would probably be more for my comfort than consideration for others.

Couldn't this problem be avoided by requiring airlines to post the width of the seats on their websites? That way the customer can be informed of the exact amount of space they are renting for their flight. Then if someone rents too few seats it is because of their lack of planning.

I have had an experience of this before. Luckily it was only like and hour and a half flight across the state, but it still made me super mad. I’m more of a petite person, and being a tiny thirteen year old I only take up half a plane seat. I STILL wouldn’t want someone taking up that other half of my seat, it’s unfair! I didn’t pay for half a seat, I paid for a whole seat. And I sure as heck didn’t pay for you to have an extra half of a seat. Even though I only take up half of it, I am still going to take up as much room as I want on it to make me comfortable. If you know you can’t fit in one seat, then buy another one. It will make the person sitting next to you wayyy more comfortable not having to deal with you. Not only that, but you would be comfortable not having to squish yourself in a seat. I also felt bad for my sister, who was sitting in the window seat (I was in the aisle and the guy was in the middle). He was also taking up the extra room in my sisters seat, as well. We were also mad because there were like 20 seats available that day, so the flight attendants could’ve asked someone to move to an open seat so he could’ve had two full seats, not a full seat and two halves of a seat.

Also what would happen if there was an emergency? Completely irresponsible to allow obese people to fly. I don't care about discrimination or other liberals views - even thyroid doesn't lead to this level of obesity - it is greed and laziness. Someone of this size a few decades ago would be ridiculed and now we accept it and anyone who comments is said to be ignorant or rude - why because clearly our bodies are suddenly designed to get to this size? Irresponsibility all round.

Don't charge for more weight, how about just charging everyone a little more than normal, then once you get to check in, you have the OPTION to step on the scale, and if you weigh less than a certain amount, you get a discount refund off your ticket price. Something like, men less than 220, get like $2 off per lb less than 220, and females under 180, the same.

This may sound harsh but that’s not my intent here. But just bc a person ‘can’ squeeze in a seat it still creates problems for the people to the right or left of you. I hate saying this but everyone I’ve been seated next to an overweight person, I feel like my own personal space has been encroached. Idw to be touched by another persons body for hours or unable to ever enjoy the armrest or shift from one side of my seat to the other. Now IM STUCK too and that’s the part that one must remember-it’s not about you and what YOU can tolerate. I’ve paid hefty prices for trips that were made miserable by the size or even just the inconsiderate nature of my neighbor. What is fair for the overweight person must be asked of the person beside you. What is fair for them or me? What is fair for one in front of you who feels your knees n their back etc etc. And the stewards and safety issues for the passengers relative to the pic of that man taking up the aisle as well-he’s a safety hazard to EVERYONE on that plane and you have to be blind not to see THAT. It’s about paying customers and their comfort, safety, and satisfaction as well.

I am just shy of 5’ 8, and thinking I should not have to do a hard target search for a pair of jeans. I have lived all over the world, so geography is a big indicator of diversity in sizes. So called tall sizes are often not available unless purchased online. To complicate matters, I have one of those rectangle bodies without many curves, so trying on slacks is necessary. Sometimes I shake my head in disappointment when I am faced with a rack of pants only meant for those 5’6” and under. Kudos for you for learning how to sew. Wish I had the ability.

This doesn't just happen on American Airlines. I recently saw a video a guy did because he very obese and he said he was on a plane and the company had to delay the flight because they needed to find a seatbelt extender for him. The man sitting in the seat next to him said to him, "Thanks to you being fat I'm going to miss my connecting flight!" (due to the airline needing to find a seatbelt extension). Airlines shouldn't have to lose money because a person is too big to fit in one seat. No airline should take a loss and a person who can sit comfortably in 1 seat shouldn't be crowded by a big person. It's not fair either way.

+Donna James There are no "fixed" prices for a seat on a plane. Each passenger pays according to variables such as when and where purchased, and whether or not refundable or upgradable. Even these prices vary widely. Cost is always per passenger. Being forced to purchase a 2nd seat because airline seats are too small, is, imo, partly the fault of the airline. There is no reason a 2nd seat can't be offered for a slightly higher "add on" price when it's required (and not offered when it's not required).

This works out well when I buy the extra seat between me and my buddy who is also fat. It is cheaper to buy the middle seat to Europe than to get business class. It is no one else's fault if someone is overweight so they should not suffer. You would not allow someone to bring a giant suitcase as a carry on bag, right?

When he wanted to fly, he had to pay for the whole row, so he could lie down. Of course, he was just one person, but he needed an entrie row, so he had to pay for an entire row. The condition wasn't his fault, still doesn't change the fact. I don't think it is fair to bully obese people, but of course they will need to pay for two seats, it for their own comfort.

The loss would be absolutely tiny, and i get if there is no space you may need to be bumped to a different flight if you dont want to buy another seat, but there is just no justification to charge for 2. I have purchased extra seats at times - but that was because i wanted an entire row for my partner and myself so she could have the window and i could stick my fucked leg out into the isle, and i did it when it cost a few bucks. I still think booking an empty seat should be half price at most outside those sales.

What that person did to get to that state, doesn't matter. They are at that state now, and they have to pay the price which is two seats. And if money is an issue, say they have to get on that flight to go to a funeral... well tough. Be sure to always keep money aside for situations like these. What ever reason they provide, and there are some cases that have nothing to do with being a lazy unhealthy person. Some people have a brittle bone disease that prevents them from getting enough exercise, or a deteriorating muscle condition that keeps them immobile. In those cases, maybe insurance should help foot the bill for two airline seats. The case is you take up too much room that cannot be fixed before the flight. It is, what it is.
