My employer closed my office and forced us all to Philadelphia. Commute went from 20 min to an hour (some days more). I had to pay 300 a month for parking and city taxes were 250 more a month, not to mention more in gas. I was miserable and broke. Turns out it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I finished my degree while working. Found a job posting with in the company (big company with a pension so I wasn’t about to give that up) that required us to move 5 hours away. The job was something I was excited about and It was almost double my salary, higher pension band, more opportunity for OT. Got the job, sold my house, moved to the new city. I rented a house blocks away from work, no more parking fees, no more outrageous city tax. Absolutely love what I do.

Dave Ramsey never asks the women that call what they are doing to help get out to debt because of his religious beliefs. Fundamental evangelists don't believe in working mothers. You and I clearly do, but they don't. It comes up a lot in is radio show. A lot of financial issues could be solved faster if some of the wives with older children went back into the workplace.

I was the only on whose hubby worked. only one had teen children, all the rest were house hubbies. They don't mind cuz hubby does the laundry, cooks and cleans. most are pretty good about it. none are under 26 and none are over 55.

Nick Joslin Agreed - obviously no one chooses this ahead of a better option but so many things can be bad for mental health. Try having a stressful job or even no job. Give loneliness or bereavement a try. Those can be life changing. There’s nearly always some compromising needed to get to where we want to be. I’ve done some long commutes for work. I gained the skills and experience and worked up to better jobs with easy commutes. Now I’m well paid, satisfied and things have never been better. Do what you need to do to get where you want to get.

My anxiety, blood pressure, & blood circulation are all mest up (got some cool compression socks tho) I’m at a normal weight/height & only 22 years old. Honestly you just have to set up goals for that position, ask yourself how long you’re going to be there for ? Are you at least growing and getting raises ? Best of benefits ? Have you paid off your car loan, school loans etc ? Set SMART goals for yourself & make good connections is what I understood from this video. And no I don’t want to be in this positions for another 10 years. But I do want to go back to school, so that means I need to hurry up and pay off my student loans !!

Where does her husband want to be in 5-10 years? That's the key. All this talk about minor difference in base salary, insurance and commute is all smoke. And for the record, a 1 hour commute is not that bad. If his future lies in getting out of debt now then maybe the farther job is better. Sometimes you need to take a step back to make forward progress. If his future lies in some expectation that he will get a raise or promotion in the close job then he should stick with it.

Anything hour and under isn't a bad commute. Where I've lived in the boonies, it takes 30 minutes to get anywhere. Its when you get above an hour, things get tricky. Hour and a half especially. Like I'm debating a job 2 1/2 hours away. I'd sleep there in between shifts. Make more than anywhere nearby.

I would call the company back and politely decline. With this statement. "You're offering a job for me that is a step back from what I currently am: a supervisor. Thank you, but it does not meet my career goals to step back in roles." The fact that they had to offer you the old job back at higher pay after you already left shows that they didn't value you to develop you into a supervisor. The commute isn't the problem. Most people commute an hour to work at least. The red flag was not valuing you originally to make you leave for elsewhere to further your career.

There are a number of tough choices out there. I worked for a well-known food company, offsite, for 2 years. As I am not really a people person and love my pets, it was the best thing ever. But, I didn’t trust it. I worked these 2 jobs for a few months. So, I also took on a job in the next state, working for a well-known hair and makeup brand - didn’t trust them either. Commute was 4+ hours/day total, working over 100 hours/week. I lost both jobs within months of each other. But, although the whole thing was a killer and I knew I could not do 20+ years if that commute, like other passengers I’d commuted with, the money poured in and I saved a lot. I’ve since found something with a sweet commute, great money, and working with people I actually like and respect - which was a switch. Having done what I did, without even knowing of Dave Ramsey at that time, I’m glad that it gave me an opportunity to build an emergency fund, considering that I’ve come to the realization that I need to be low/no contact with my family. As Dave often says, some of the things you must do are not forever. They are to get you to a more comfortable place in your life where things aren’t a horrifying emergency. That’s something I didn’t even know I’d need a year ago yet, something was either guiding me or compelling me, other than a reason to expand my portfolio. I was quite unhappy at the time and I’m glad that phase has ended. Onward and upward.

I am running into this dilema- a house for the same price as a crackerbox condo i town. The house is a 40 minute drive from work. The condo is 15 minutes from work. The house is in my hometown where I grew up as a kid. My sister and mom would be blocks away from me at any given time when I am not at work. The crime rate is litterally ZERO in my hometown. The condo here in town...well it's a city and it draws riff raff from Chicago like flies on manure. Both new places are the same price, both have pros and cons. The condo also sits 100 yards from my wife's office at church where she works, has several restaurants, and amenities close by. My home town......we have two taverns, a post office, and a convenience store. Nearest town with a Walmart/grocery is 15 minutes away. BUT I'd be close to my retired mom (dad passed away a couple years ago), and my sister and her family. Tough choice, haha.
