i think it could be useful if you edit in clips of the moments you are talking about and an image of the rulebook showing the relevant rule, as well as addressing common misconceptions or fan perceptions. For example in the welsh disallowed try, in the past few years fans have been seeing tries get awarded for what feels like less and less control so that might have affected how people feel about the ruling

Nigel in the next episode please comment on world rugbys decision to overturn Farrell red cards, and for a confused fan please help me understand how that was different to the Pieter Steph Du Toit red card against France when Kwagga pushed him into the ruck. Thanks and much appreciated
I love the idea of player names on jerseys. As an American baseball fan of the Chicago White Sox, I remember (when I was 11), the team owner, Bill Veeck, was the first in the sports world to come up with the idea, back in 1960. It’s now standard across all North American sports, but also most international team competitions, from Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, etc., world Soccer (football), Olympic basketball and handball and so on. I’m seeing it a bit in rugby, notably English Premiership and a few national teams (Scotland, with my namesake Jamie Ritchie wore our surname against France over his No. 6 jumper on Saturday)….I’d love to see it in the World Cup as long as they don’t allow what happened in world football where player numbers are totally random and no longer bare any relationship to a player’s position on the pitch. I want my hookers to continue wearing 2 and 16, thank you very much.
Try - only able to see separation in super slow motion! Laws of physics etc... slow it down enough... it’s killing the game! Pause yes, replay yes, but don’t slow things down it distorts everything!
I was giggling to myself when I was watching Wales beat England and thinking 'Nigel will be enjoying this' 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😊😊
Please comment on Kolbe incident against AB just before half-time. Try or no try?
@kristian762
11 ай бұрын
According to the explanation of the Reese Zammit try, seems like Kolbes try should've been awarded. He was never in possession of the ball so he never lost control of it, he got a hand to it and had downward pressure
My question is.. Why did the referee not look longer at the incident? The player was clearly knocked out cold by direct force to the head! Something world Rugby is trying to get rid of! What happens to the referee and TMO NOW? Are they fined? Are they sent off to do more training? Because incidents like this change players life’s and I feel they need to be held more accountable for their actions or their lack of action! Felt like they didn’t really care that much

I think they were reluctant to give a red card 11 seconds into the game as they would be accused of ruining the game. It was a red card incident so they couldn't give a yellow, it would've been upgraded to red in the bunker anyways, easier to just say its a rugby incident and move on. Maybe ref's are like players in that if they haven't officiated a game in a while they're cold, rusty, nervous... Brace looked completely out of his depth in that game. But there should be consequences for bad calls, specially terrible ones like that
Play for the jersey and we'll remember the name.

In regards to Nigel’s request for input on players names on jerseys. I may be old school (when you went in for injury replacement you took the jersey off the injured player and wore it for the rest of the game), but I do not think the players name is necessary. The player is the position/jersey and the team sheet let’s us know who is playing, thus is it even necessary? In the professional era is there a need to recognize the player more than the position - gridiron starts to creep into my thoughts here and I don’t want rugby tradition to be left behind for the sake of someone’s ego. Again, I may be too old school. Thanks Nigel for the awesome content and delivery, it is almost as much fun as still seeing you on the pitch.
I think having names on jerseys is a massive missed selling point, and one that I believe could bring exactly the influx of funds that Wales needs right now. What I'd have done as a kid growing up to have the names of my hero's on my back during training.
Question for you sir, if the ball is kicked backwards but goes out on the full dose a lineout still take place at the point where the ball was kicked?
Hi Nigel, just a quick question, the 5m line zone along the sidelines, where you can't be inside for lineouts and scrums, Why are penalty kicks and conversion kicks aloud into this neutral 5m zone.
He’s wasn’t gathering the ball - he was touching it down in one movement. It’s different.
@RatzaChewy
11 ай бұрын
Think Nigel overcomplicates the explanation. Ball is in the air, LRZ touches it, it moves away from his hand for a split second, hits the floor, then he grounds it. Ball in the air or being carried: Grounding needs to be CONTROLLED. Ball is on the deck: Downward pressure needs to be applied, no control necessary.
@commentwell3870
11 ай бұрын
The ball was momentarily lying on the ground and Kolbe applied pressure in one quick movement - even if he applied his pinky, it had to be a try. It had nothing to do with control as in the Welsh example.
@dannyboywhaa3146
11 ай бұрын
@@RatzaChewy excellent comment, agreed! Although, it doesn’t hit the ground before he is touching it again... his hand left the ball only momentarily... back on the ball before grounding! Did he have control? Doesn’t matter - it’s only a knock on if it touches the floor - if you regain control or even kick it before it hits the ground, it’s not a knock on! One might argue that he never regained control properly before touching down however, I’d argue he doesn’t need to because it’s a grounding, not control/possession. For example, if you’re running through and the ball is bouncing in goal area, you don’t have to be in control or even have downward pressure... just to touch the ball when it’s on the ground in goal area. Wrong decision, technically anyway but awful to slow it down and cancel a try like that! Killing the game!
@dannyboywhaa3146
11 ай бұрын
@@commentwell3870 why should you need control when the ball is in the air but not when it’s on the ground? What about when it is an inch off the ground? Not required then... so where is the limit? It was one movement, so fine by me, a try! I’m English lol
@mchiggo24
11 ай бұрын
@@dannyboywhaa3146 it always needs to be a controlled grounding whenever the ball is not already in direct contact with the ground to score a try (whether it’s an inch off the ground or in hand). It doesn’t need to be controlled whilst already grounded as any downwards pressure would score the try. For example if a player dropped the ball over the try line they couldn’t just fall on it to score they’d have to regather it before it hit the ground or it’s a knock on. The same applies here LRZ effectively took possession by touching the ball, then had to regain control due to him being in possession before he could score the try. He failed to do this
For the next video, can you explain why Owen Farrells red card was rescinded, whilst Pieter Labuschangue’s wasn’t?
Questions about line-outs: Why was Italy deemed to have players ‘leave the line-out’ when - to my amateur eyes - they didn’t do anything different from other teams’ line-outs?

Well done on the new calves, do think names on the Jersey is good
I dont mind have the name on the back of the jersey but id prefer that it if the names were underneath the numbers, it makes the position most important then. With the names on the back it makes it seem like the player owns the position because it is read first
Always interesting to get the explanations, but his fellow referees are well protected with him. Why talking about Rhees-Zamit's try and not the exact same try awarded to Scotland?
6:12 i don't like it. One of the things i always loved about rugby was that the roles were more important that who did it. Put Names on the back is the beginin of put any numbers, just like football do. For me it must state in 1 to 23 forever ❤
@RubyDoobieScoo

There's so much history behind the numbers for each country, great players who inspired past and current generations to play Rugby, the All Black's 6 jersey is the jersey of players like Jerry Collins and Michael Jones, so when Shannon Frizzel puts it on before beating Ireland in the quarter final he'll be putting on the jersey of every All Black's Blindside flanker, if his name is on it it's just his jersey.

I agree about the numbers but do think adding player names adds something for fans, especially those watching on television….Though granted this would mean hurriedly preparing jerseys with the correct name and number match after teams are announced. Some of the English Premiership clubs have used a kind of template space for the name to be added to a specific number, but I do want to keep the 1 through 23 system that attaches meaning to each number.
Normally, I would not like the names of players on jerseys, but I'm watching from Canada, where the options are to watch the French commentary on English broadcasts (on TV5), to pay exorbitant fees for specialty channels or wait for the highlights on KZread. I know the names of many players, but I do not see them often enough to recognize them at sight. So, to my surprise, I quite like having names on jerseys.
Great to get a refs perspective on decisions. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your comments in the world cup.
lrz deserved that try, shame it wasn't to be. I reckon names on jersey is a good thing for people watching it on TV, so they can know all the players on the opposite team.
I'm personally not a fan of the numbers on the tops, but I can understand for new fans trying to get into rugby, finding it easier to identify players.
The name on jerseys is unnecessary for me.
Think the names on the jerseys is a good idea. It will help casual fans identify who’s who making it easier for them to follow and will encourage bairns to buy jerseys with favourite players names on similar to football hopefully increasing the fan base in the sport and helping it in some small way to grow.
Would England, Ireland or NZ have had that much scrutiny......
I love rugby and want the sport to grow across all ages and countries. For me the names on the shirts will help the casual rugby viewer maybe become more than that. It can’t hurt in anyway. So I say let’s go with it 👍

Thanks Nigel for backing up what we 'one-eyed' Bok supporters immediately thought about Mallía's blatant thuggery. What has riled me up particularly as an ex-player who was very privileged to be able to help with the primary school rugby training of both my sons is the very poor image this type of nonsense has caused in convincing parents not to encourage their kids (of both sexes) to play the game. Add to that the vitriol aimed at Jaco Peyper for quite correctly sending Steward off for his terribly poor tackle on Keenan and maybe you can see where I'm coming from (Cape Town!).
Not convinced the Zammet pictures proved your point there. No names on jerseys, very crass and what if someone else need the Jersey in an emergency situation? More in-depth long form content from Nigel, please.

The names shouldn't be on the top. In rugby, it's still seen as the shirt that means a lot and the name takes away from that imo

If anything they should add the names of every player that has worn that jersey a substantial number of times/achieved something great in it, written in small lettering, added into the design in a non obvious way that you'd only see in person. As you were saying there's so much history in the jersey number, it doesn't just belong to the person wearing it, it belongs to everyone who has worn it.

Question for you Nigel. If your team has a penalty advantage and you know where the mark of this penalty is - Say in a ruck. Are you allowed to deliberately knock the ball on to end the advantage so you can do a quick tap in the hopes that the team will all be offside? As deliberately knocking the ball on is a penalty offense, could your penalty be reversed because you intentionally committed a foul?
i cannot wait for next week after the second england wales game
A couple weeks ago, in the first meeting between Australia & New Zealand, an injured player got a yellow card, after a sub had been waived off by the ref. Can you explain why the sub didn't happen? Does the ref bear some responsibility for the yellow, if he refused the sub?
@McDJNomi
11 ай бұрын
im quite interested in that too. I think the ref can have a say, because he wouldve subbed in a player that was already off. The sub would only be allowed if the player is injured. But i dont know how you want to have a ref determine if a player is injured or not. Hes not medically trained for that. But also the player was more or less able to continue to not warrant a 5 minute break to asess his injuries. and just allowing him to sub off because he says hes injured, would open the door to abuse of the rule. but i dont know... was unfortunate, because it was clear he wasnt 100% percent
I feel the interpretation of laws due to them not being clear cut is what causes as many issues in the game now. Referees and fans are constantly disagreeing on the exact same call at different points in games which causes a lot of criticism due to the u-turn in consistency
everything is going very well
Names on shirts its great in my opinion. Creating characters and/or heroes in the game brings in supporters and more importantly the next generation. We dont have enough characters in Rugby. You see the ones we do have Joe Marler, yourself Nigel, another referee I loved to see was Tony Spreadbury. Then dare I say James Haskell, Gavin Henson all bring something special to the game Names on shirts sells shirts which is also good for revenue which is clearly needed but maybe not shirts that are £100 plus

One problem - e.g. in SA game: a red card after the event isn’t effective as in this case the offending team had a player who should have been off the field playing which disadvantaged the other team.
Not a big fan of names on jerseys, at least for the All Blacks, it want it to be as black as it can reasonably be, also the numbers have their own history, the All Black's 10 jersey is the jersey of players like Grant Fox, Mehrtens, Carter, Beauden, Mo'unga and more, stamping a new identity onto it lessens the old identity and legacy.

The bunker is a great idea, and worked well for Fagerson. I think there may be a tendency for refs (and TMOs) to "bottle it" when making tough or unpopular decisions. The Owen Farrell incident at Twickenham this weekend was a prime example. That was a red all day long, and the TMO (and possibly assistants) should have said to the ref (who i thought was otherwise excellent, by the way) "hold on a minute, Nika - i think there might be a case for a red here". The bunker adds that extra layer of security, but i wonder if it might cause refs to shy away from straight reds. Thoughts? Also, should Steward have got a red? It was only Josh Adams' ability to turn in the air to land safely that prevented his serious injury. Steward's actions were deliberate, reckless and dangerous.

Nigel, I have a question about he Italy/Ireland game but applies to most Europeans games. Why do the commentators talk like auctioneers? This might be out of your wheelhouse but would like to know your opinion none the less. I vote for no names on jerseys...it is a tacky marketing ploy. In North American sports the name equates to paycheck usually. There are lots of players that rarely get a nod or notice but the game would fall apart without them. What does it say to these players when their jersey is in the discount bin?

The names on the back is great especially in the world cup where there are loads of unknown players in tear 2 teams. Helps viewers and commentators. I understand, that rugby is a sport which is way more focused on team cohesion than single player action (in comparison to football) and I love that. But on a more general level, humans have developed to be especially good at identifying faces and thus identifying single players. Humans are also more trained on feeling with and thus cheering for players than only for a full team. So I do think that player names on the jerseys are a tiny but extremely impactful step towards making rugby more popular!
No problem with names but should be more prominent than a sponsor.
Rugby has got itself into a right mess to the point where I'd sooner watch old repeats. They'll be banning running fast next because it might be too dangerous for anyone to tackle the runner...
In regards to the charge down red card, you say the player in the air is not in control of their movement, so why is a player penalised when trying to catch the ball and a player leaps intot he air? Why do they have controll then? Bit of a double standard
