There is a series with Gemma Chan called "Humans" which is exactly what you are talking about! The robots literally took over the world and humans were forced to work under them. Even therapists are robots. Very interesting series, totally a must watch!

One thing to note about the google engineer is that he is a self proclaimed “christian mystic and gnostic christian” and has explicitly stated that his conclusion that the AI is sentient was “pretheoretic” and informed by his religious beliefs. Not saying that sentient AI is out of the question, but there are probably way more problematic things about google than the lambda algorithm right now

Just my opinion, the reason why humans are working is to earn money and put food on the table. Humans are competing because there are limited resources. Let's say AI solves these problems, they are able to create surpluses for both humans and AI. They can run the world themselves without human intervention and humans' purpose in life is just to enjoy life and do what they want. Would this be eutopia? AI still run under the basic fundamental rules of not harming humans etc.

But the ting about AI development is, we are not 100% certain how advanced it can be. To the point where it can successfully lift this restriction? Then what? Keep in mind that the internet space is HUGE if not boundless. We have WAY more restrictions here, an analogy is say Minecraft where developers can make one that has no barrier vs one which you can walk to a "Wall". AI and the internet is the former while we in this Earth is the latter. Even if you say there is the whole galaxy/galaxies which we can move about, it is still not as good. AI can (at least theoretically) live in the virtual space forever, even if it is disconnected from us (except when they are destroyed in the internet space), akin to how the things we put online stays online until it is permanently removed. But we cannot live forever in our current body or/and place because they will fail eventually.

far from sentient, like light-years far. any open-sourced NLP ML engines can do what this "google engineer" claimed to be a sensation. AGI is very task centric. people often confuse deep learning and no/lack of supervision. but having said that, it would just lead to the AI doing what we call "stupid stuff" due to the lack of semantics in the worst case, or to put it simply, waste of time and resources.

I remember there is 1 BLack mirror episode that talks about this. It’s about this lady who lost her husband and he ‘came back’ in ai through chats/email/phone call. Later on, the lady ordered a robot that looks like her dead husband

Humans are advancing the wrong way. We should be advancing emotionally and mentally instead of advancing technologically. Who knows we can actually teleport if we advance enough mentally? Or be better than AI or cyborgs? And we can finally connect with the far advanced aliens out there which advanced the right way. ahahaha
