Clarifications: 1. While we strongly condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, TDK Podcast aims to encourage audiences to consider the many contributing factors leading up to the war, and think critically regarding how mainstream and social media portrays the conflict. The information presented is based on our personal research and understanding of the situation, and we apologise for any misinformation presented. We urge viewers to do their own research into the topic to form their own opinions as many nuances and details are easily lost in our condensed version of events. 2. The episode has 2 mistaken mentions of Georgia being a part of NATO (6:10 & 14:04). Georgia had joined the NATO-run Partnership for Peace in 1994, seeked closer ties since 2003, and was declared an "aspirant country" in 2011, but has yet to make a NATO accession due to various requirements, and complications with Russian forces. However, Georgia remains one of the alliance's closest partners, participating in drills and missions with NATO countries. 3. With regards to the points made at 34:40 of the video, Kirsten Han has reached out to provide clarifications. The information cited in the video was from this source: www.straitstimes.com/singapore/shanmugam-on-thum-ping-tjins-meeting-with-mahathir-whole-conduct-is-a-little-sad-and-a-bit Kirsten's account of the visit written on the day of their meeting: kirstenhan.com/blog/2018/8/30/80-minutes-with-dr-m Kirsten's response to the source article (ST) above: kirstenhan.com/blog/2018/9/1/a-response-to-mr-seah-kian-pengs-allegations

Since even when part of Ukraine was under Russian empire till Soviet Union times Ukrainian language and culture were legally prohibited . There is no writer in history of Ukraine who wouldn't be persecuted or killed for their activity. The Ukrainian statehood was fought against and denied obviously. Nevertheless, the scariest and darkest moments in history were definitely the Stalinist repression and holodomor (man made famine) which took tens of millions of innocent lives. Nevertheless, after Ukraine gained its independence the imperialist narrative towards Ukraine prevailed. As Ukrainians are bilungual, Russia and Ukraine cultural ties and exchange were strong. Even though politically Russia was quite a bully. Most people tried to maintain normal relations with Russians. Until of course the 2014 revolution which was met hostile not only by Russian governments but majority of population. You can see Winter on Fire on Netflix. The Kremlin supported warlords occupied the East of sovereign state, while Crimea was annexed. Even then the cultural ties remained to some point. Jon-Paul, did you know that during the Japanese Occupation, Japanese soldiers would randomly snatch a baby out of their mother's arms, throw it up into the air, and pierce it with their rifle's bayonets? And at roadblocks, when they inspect your papers, they will feel the palms of your hands and if your skin is smooth or if you appear too scholarly or clean-cut, you'd be taken away for "enhanced" questioning on suspicion that you're part of the resistance movement? Women are also randomly captured and thrown into the many comfort houses to serve their soldiers. You're willing to live under occupation anytime? You want to take the chance of your mother or sister being made to serve as comfort women? You want to be taken away for "enhanced questioning" simply because a soldier doesn't like how you look, or how you salute him on the street? You have no idea, and no appreciation of the safety and security you now live under. You're so willing to give it up in a heartbeat. If war ever comes to Singapore, I don't fight for my country. I fight for my family and my love ones. If I surrender, I give up control of their fate. So long as I'm able to fight, I can still control whether the invaders can get to my family and love ones. I can still protect them to a certain degree. It's better than no protection that surrendering offers.

Then the question would be, what good would it do for the country if you're dead. That's 1 less person for a revolution. Your death or sacrifice is not going to stop a baby from getting pierced or a person getting beheaded if your death do not come into fruition of a successful defense against the enemy. Sometimes it's not about "Garang" or "protecting" it's called planning for the future. What's good to throw your life away in a losing battle than to just surrender and fight another day.

Problem is if everyone think like this then might as well just roll out the red carpet and let them occupy. What makes you the exception if everyone else sacrifice? We can only ever have an impact if everyone has the same end goal. An army is only as good as its weakest link. Yes we probably won't win against a strong adversary. Ukraine probably didn't believe it will win against Russia either theoretically. But I rather do something about it and maybe have a chance of a better outcome than let other people trample over my livelihood.

@@Ranger629I don't think it's that simple, once an occupation starts the chances of turning the tide to "fight another day" severely decreases. Even in WW2, Singapore didn't manage to do much to fight back once the Japanese were in power, it was pretty much a waiting game at that point to see if the allied forces would overcome the axis. And like they said in the video, the first days of war are crucial as foreign aid has yet to pour in. Once the enemy has penetrated far enough, there's little to nothing we can do on our own to push them back out. And once they are in power, the amount of damage they are able to do tenfolds.

28:22- Jon Paul does not care who is in charge- maybe he is assuming life is the same under occupation. Did he read about the shooting of young able Singapore men by the Japanese during WW2? How about the Prisoners of war who were forced to build a railway between Thailand and Myanmar? He does not care about who is in charge because it has always been PAP in charge and life generally is good, you can go jog at 3am and still come back safe and sound. Now Jon Paul, if the next one in charge is going to make you build a railway between Thailand and Myanmar- you will still be alive (to build the railway) but don't expect to be paid because you have surrendered without fighting and is now "occupied". Would you still choose occupation? You might die building the railway though- read the history.

I don't usually make comments of video, but i think JP's position on dying for Singapore prompts me to say something. First of all, the assumption is that taking up arms to defend equates to dying in battle. The likelihood is high, but not all the time. Next, invading forces invade always have an objective in mind. It could be as mild as "replacing" PAP government. If you really don't mind that, then of course surrendering is fine. Looking at Ukraine, it shows that people are in support of the government, if not the Ukraine military and its ordinary people would have let the Russian military pass through the country and straight to the Presidential palace to topple the current government. The people there are fighting for what they believe to be preserving their identity and as well as their democracy. To them, it's worth the sacrifice such that their next-generation could thrive.

In 1997-even as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland were being invited to join the alliance-Russia and nato signed a “founding act” in which Russia accepted nato enlargement. In exchange, nato ruled out the “permanent” deployment of “substantial combat forces” in eastern Europe or the placement of nuclear weapons there, a constraint it observes to this day.

i think this conflict is very complicated. this episode and the information within talks about many different things such as some of its origins, media perspective, retaliatory efforts (sanctions etc), and general sentiments of singaporeans towards it. i think what could be done better would be to break the conflict into its different bits, and invite expert guests on the show to talk about some of the things. problem is these would be individuals whom do not usually have the experience of going on youtube / work restrictions etc. 1. origins of the conflict, to invite 2 guests perhaps, a historian otaku in modern international history (ie cold war. a history teacher at JC level can do this.) and someone who had experience in foreign affairs / exposure to culture or working experience in eastern europe. this episode would easily have 45min-1hr airtime content. 2. what are sanctions, and how do they affect people. invite someone who does regulatory compliance in the financial services industry. you guys can also branch out and talk about things like money laundering, crypto, high profile scams in sg (nickel dude) etc and go full ozark if you want to. this would bring more interest in a traditionally boring space. 3. NS, what NS means for singaporeans, why do we have NS, why is yesterday's NS still relevant today given that the war playbook is completely different from before? invite a regular who has graduated, and also bring a ww2 historian. 4. discuss about the current META for the conflict. we see social media playing such a huge role. why is rl war trash talk so similar to the stereotypical xboxlive CoD style? where do the tech giants fit in all this? do they moderate (LOL)? how to moderate? this conflict will definitely become some kind of case study. just some food for thought for the daily ketchup.

No truly neutral observer is dismissing Putin's claims of security if Ukraine becomes a NATO member, but he did not need to move his troops into Ukraine. He could have just kept them on the Russian of the Ukraine-Russia border. He would not lose face within Russia nor outside of Russia. And if Russia really gets attacked, he can then justifiably invade Ukraine in self-defence. The reaction from the world then would be very different from what it is now. But now, having struck the first blow, for him to climb down from this invasion, to pull his troops back to Russia without any gains, or to fully conquer Ukraine and then have to give it back either because of pressure from the rest of the world or through defeat in a subsequent West-led Ukraine-liberation war, there is no pill that he can realistically swallow.

The all or none approach here was never going to work out and now Russian population is even more isolated to the point it will take multiple generations to recover even after/if they get leadership willing to come to the table. 26:50 Jon-Paul, please don't spread mis-information. Get your facts right. The reason why the western powers are sending troops to countries that share a border with western Ukraine is because those countries (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia) are members of NATO, and those soldiers are there to beef up the defensive capabilities of those NATO members, in case they have to activate Article 5 of the NATO treaty. It is not so that in case Russian forces accidentally kills an American soldier, it gives the US the license to get physically involved in the Ukraine-Russia war. Even without those additional troops, if Russia were to cross over the Ukraine border into any of those NATO countries without their permission, even if no one is harmed, it gives NATO the right to defend their territory and fight Russia. This 3000 troops is specifically sent to Poland. The other members have different numbers of troops sent to them.

I dare say that being under occupation now vs the past would be different. Which is why, I would also put down my arms and accept being occupied. Also need to look at the reason why we being attacked, japanese hated the british and chinese as many of their people suffered the same fate when the chinese defended, therefore they are "angry". Resulting in many things being done immorally behind the scenes. If in russia's case, they want to take over ukraine to stop advancement of nato's strength, would the soldiers really go around doing crazy shit if ukraine had just given up?

Singapore's stand against Russia in this conflict would have huge percussion to Singapore's companies. Economies wise, Changi Airport Group International is one of the largest foreign airport operator in Russia, Olam is the largest foreign land owner in the Russia far east region, while Food Empire's revenue is significantly exposed to Russia with its MacCoffee product popular in Eastern Europe etc. The stand made in the parliament is implicitly a warming to our neighbors tinkering with the idea of invading Singapore. Lastly, does most people realised that while Ukraine is a larger country geographically relative to Singapore, but Singapore do have approximately triple the air force offensive assets and naval vessels? And on the same line, the military defensive weapons from the West and the will of the people are superiorly more effective in stalling and slowing an entirely overpowering invading Russian force

Here’s my 1cent as a IS professional based in SG working for a US firm. As a preface, I do not support Russia’s invasion, but imo it is understandable. We have to keep in mind that pre-2014 Rus-Ukr had friendly relations. But that ended in 2014 when the US organised a military coup to overthrow and install a pro-US Govt, which is largely what pushed ukr to want to join NATO. Additionally, they have been conducting military drills in the Baltic states

When russia agreed to east west Germany re-merger, they requested once to join NATO. Then USSR basically almost ended already and then Russian leader literally like "eh you say NATO is not a 'against russia' alliance then let us join". NATO called it a dream aka impossible. Then in 2000 in Putin's 1st tour he requested again to join NATO, again rejected. This cemented in Russia political circles that NATO is an 'against Russia' alliance. Ukraine definitely have the sovereign right to choose their alliances. But thats idealism, in an ideal world they can join NATO and EU and Russia can't do a thing. But the reality is no lor, its just like Cuba had every sovereign right to let Russia place missiles on their soil but obviously USA will never let them, then what were they expecting, especially when Russia literally already came out and declared that they will never let Ukraine join NATO/EU with troops amassed at their borders. Due to history, geography and current politics, realistically Ukraine must always be the neutral buffer state, and honestly if they played it right they could've reaped huge benefits by being the land bridge between NATO/EU and Russia. Ukraine chose to stick to idealism and so lets see where it gets them now. About NATO being a defensive alliance. Nato changed it's policy, it's no longer a only defensive alliance that only attacks when attacked, NATO followed and invaded with US everywhere for 'REASONS'. The NATO expansion is factually true. How it expanded, countries joining on their own accord or not doesn't matter, who knows if behind the scene EU/NATO give them good deals to join. The thing that matters is Russia thinks NATO expansion is true, is a threat, and when you think about it they have understandable cause to think that way. But of course war is like beating women, there's plenty of reasons to beat women, you just don't do it, when you do it, no matter for what reason, you are wrong.

No one has convinced me that any Nato member will want to willingly attack russia when they have 5000 nukes. Nato members don't even want to cough up the cash to play their part for defence. With so many members, it would be near impossible even to get a consensus to invade russia. Also, if Putin's goal was to weaken Nato and demilitarize it's border, what he is doing now basically obtained the opposite effect. Also China has to subsidize it's ally's war. If this is not a strategic blunder, i don't know what is. They can't provide economic security to Ukraine and has a multitude of domestic issues to settle. It's no wonder nations want to leave the russian orbit.

@@lagofala National security concerns will always trump economy concern, also there is a long term economic reason why russia will want to invade ukraine and that is Ukraine recently discovered Oil deposits that can rival Russia. Russia's economy is 4-50% oil exports. Best case is russia cos of all the sanctions and shit going on kenna revolution and putin is like hanged on the streets la. but realistically i think In the end, russia will definitely not take the whole Ukraine, it will end up in some sort of west/east ukraine situation. so that Russia gets the buffer state it wants and control the oil fields in the east of ukraine. Also China and Russia aint so friend friend as you think, they are at best frenemies. The enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of relation only. For many years China was closer to USA then China is to Russia, things dont change so fast in geopolitics. China helped USA to win the cold war against Russia BTW, its why USA recognized PRC as the one China in UN and initiated them into WTO. Anyway China will always put its global interest first, just stay neutral as always, and just make any money they can. IF WW3 broke out even better for them, just stay out of it and when NATO and Russia finish destroying themselves, China has a chance at global hegemony, just like how USA emerged after WW2 as the global hegemony as they entered the war late and no actual fighting minus pearl harbor was done on USA mainland. Putin before invading definitely went to Xi and got Xi's assurance that China won't try funny things on russia southern borders while they invade Ukraine, i think China told Russia in exchange to respect them and delay the invasion to after the winter olympics.

Ukrainian are fighting for their own life. There were some special BS operation. But its all about conventional wisdom and If we were to define the word “philosophy” in both its academic and colloquial sense that is, actual “philosophy” and the more casual “she responded philosophically” we might say that it means both to get to the fundamental truth of things as well as to view things calmly and with perspective. The history of Europeans and the irony that while the rule of law prevails in Britain what western enablers do is in a sense more egregious than what foreign kleptocrats do, because in the West we have a genuine, institutionalized rule of law, while kleptocrats operate in systems where no real rules exist. Their complicity in kleptocracy has corroded the legal integrity of the British system. The laundering of a kleptocrat’s public image, do not happen by accident or on its own. Professional intermediaries in the established democracies are critical links for venal kleptocrats, who seek to move ill-gotten gains from authoritarian systems into the democracies and the finance system, where the rule of law offers their ill-gotten wealth a safe and respectable haven. I found it fascinating to learn that the most popular book in the state and defense departments right now is Thucydides’ The History of the Peloponnesian War. What does it say that the people who have access to the best intelligence on the planet-spies, dossiers, diplomats, satellite imagery-are reading a book published about a war between Athens and Sparta 2,500 years ago. But it makes sense: The wisdom in that book has stood the test of time. It goes to the essence of human nature and to conflicts between great powers.

I then had a dream of Jesus coming before God and he spoke of the Tabernacle in perfect context, "A word I didn't know existed because I've never read the bible", and the love I felt from Jesus was unlike anything I've ever felt before - A lifetime of joy every second - It brought me to sobbing and it changed my life forever. I've had other miracles since, a few being a light turning on in answer to deeply needful prayer 6 times, seeing a orb of light hours before a major surgery, seeing an Angel in a dream the night my mother prayed for me to see one, "Without telling me", and so much more. Know that God and Jesus ARE real and that they love us deeply. Let go of your hatred and Imagine yourself holding the people who've hurt you. Tell them you love and forgive them and do your best to follow, "I've failed many times", the 10 commandments.
