As a rule all deep chested dogs including Danes, Dobermans, etc. are prone to Gastric Torsion. All of my vets (past & present) recommend feeding at an elevated level for the comfort of the dog and reduction of Torsion. All of our dogs get a boost depending on their height.

I bought my girl an elevated feeder, and what does she do? She grabs a bite, drops it on the floor, eats it, and repeats until she's done eating 😂

We use plant stands with stainless bowls. They come in many heights.

Great info and good to know! We use elevated water dishes but still use lower food bowls. Our Danes are still puppies but we plan on using elevated bowls in the near future! We do however use “slow eater” bowls to slow down their eating.

Ours is made of adjustable shelving brackets with a board that the hubby cut to fit the bowls, you can get any type of wood to coordinate your decor 😉👍

We've used raised feeders since Osborne was about 7 months old. Raised feeders, as well as stomach tacking (aka a gastro-pexi) is, I believe, necessary for Danes and other deep-chested and large-breed dogs (as was mentioned below). We got the tacking done for Osborne when he got neutered, when he was 15 months old (Dec 2014), which is around the recommended time to do it (tacking sooner than that can be a moot point since Danes grow for almost 2 years, as we know). Although it most likely will stop torsion when they bloat, it doesn't 100% prevent bloat itself, as we found out in Feb 2016, when Osborne bloated. Luckily, my knowledge of the bloat signs and a quick trip to the vet (along with some Gas-X down his throat) saved him. The vet also stated that the tacking saved his stomach from twisting (and that we would have lost him is he didn't have the tacking done). Osborne is now 7-1/2, and I'm so glad that he's still with us. (*KNOCK ON WOOD*)

My danes heads have always bee counter height, how would you like to have to bend over that far to eat your food? Seems almost cruel, especially as they get older.

I feed Lurch on an elevated feeder because I can't imagine it's very comfortable for him to have to stoop that much to eat. One thing I do make sure of though is that I don't allow him to run and play for an hour or so after he eats to make sure he's not moving around while his belly is full.

Like these vids a lot.No better friend than dane.Ours goes crazy of joy when we come back from work.All my danes i ever had i akways made them a feeder that when he eats the bowl bout 1 Inch below his mouth.And with nice sauces and meaty bits that huge tongue slurps its up like a vacuum...even when the power is off.They are awesome breed heartbreak breed cause mine only goes bout 11 years the kicks the bucket cancer etc.

I've only lost 1 Dane to blot and that was 30 years ago. We've used elevated feeding stations every since and never had another problem.

This video could not have been posted in more perfect timing! We really appreciate your tips and calm approach to your girl, and we try to apply it with our own little dane, she just turned 3 months old today! Can you please make a video with all the tricks you have taught Gus? Our Nala is catching up very fast, she's very intuitive and it takes us about 4-5 trials to make her learn a new trick, so because she is our first puppy ever, we sit and wonder, OK what else can we teach her? The important ones would be sit, come, down, off, place, wait, and heel. There are so many other things you can teach them, but I’d say that’s a great list to start with

@@GreatDaneCare We have perfected these commands, except "place" which is taking some time but both my husband and I are being persistent with this one since we watched your video. It is indeed spot-on for them to learn how to follow space directions. We also know how to paw shake, shake other paw, open doorknobs, though the latter was unintentional, she picked it up by watching us, aaand it's proving to be a little problematic :/ One thing at a time. Place is awesome and useful in SO many ways but it does take practice. I’d highly recommend building a raised place box to train it as that helps so much. Thanks for the kind words as well!

I have 4 Great Danes and I let them decide. I have food and water on stands and on the floor. Gypsy, Jack and Reba use the stands. My Johnni Girl likes to lay down to eat, always has.

Did you have Gus do the gastropexy or you do the non surgical this is my first Great Dane and she’s 3 months and that’s my biggest fear is bloating i know the non surgery ways to prevent but wanted your take on it

Hahaha, I tried painting my Dane's nails yesterday. She was NOT having it. I tried brushing her and sneaking paint on a toe at a time. NEWP! Polish is everywhere hahaha! Btw, I don't normally do this but she's 140lbs and everyone thinks she's a "he".

It’s a very helpful preventative surgery, I’d recommend performing in conjunction with a spray/neuter if you have it done

I had a Blue Great Dane way back in 1970. They are great clowns, Sydney, well Sir Sydney Buxton to be exact. Lol. Their ancestors were a lot smaller. A wolf may be heavier but would never reach 36 inches. 36 inches are table and counter height, so training is a much unless you won't mind your turkey ending up on the floor, yep when not watched closely this will happen.

Interesting. We have always used elevated bowls and water dishes for our Great Danes. To many of those who use "the dogs in the wild don't eat or drink from elevated surfaces," they are often the same ones who feed raw and give bones for their dogs to eat for "...that's the way dogs naturally do it (eat) in the wild." Well this may be true, but dogs "in the wild" live a considerably shorter life, and often suffer terribly from what they consume.

Nope. As per our Vet, food and the rate of intake, ease, and activity before and after, has been proven and disproved many times over. It doesn't hurt them to hang their head in any way. Bowser eats from a muffin tin on the floor. He free feeds and can always have as much as he wants, he just has to eat it slowly. Raising their dish only helps them to gobble faster!

My vet has been adamant that I use an elevated feeder to prevent torsion.

I am getting a Great Dane puppy in about 2 weeks. After watching the video on food, while being great, I feel the need to switch and wean her onto another food. She is currently on IAMS adult food. She is a bit too thin coming from a litter of 14, she and her siblings are a bit gangley. The breeder says Science Diet caused the runs. Any thoughts? Please advise!

I'm getting a dane pup in about 5 weeks and my breeder said 4health adult large breed is a fantastic food and to stay at and under 24% protein, and between 10% - 12% and up in fat. She uses 4health, and diamond natural, and victor. She said you can use large breed food and to stay away from puppy "formulas" and she likes to alternate flavors. We usually stay away from chicken though as our frenchie is allergic

I have enjoyed many of your videos, but if I may offer some creative feedback: please work on your audio space? IE put something on the walls (blankets, foam panels, bookshelves, whatever) to break up the echo that is coming through really strong in your videos. It makes it really challenging to pick out your voice at times and I have to turn the volume way down otherwise you end up sounding really distorted at normal listening levels - but at soft volumes I have to listen really hard without any other disruptions to make out what you're saying.
