Brother! I enjoyed this video very much, I’m going to share my wife’s testimony- she got her minor in philosophy- I hope it affirms what you’re saying here: “I took a philosophy course because certain types of courses were required at northwestern university “distribution courses” they were called. I came to this quote in the work of René Descartes: “I gradually rooted out from my mind all the errors which had hitherto crept into it. Not that in this I imitated the Sceptics who doubt only that they may doubt, and seek nothing beyond uncertainty itself; for, on the contrary, my design was singly to find ground of assurance, and cast aside the loose earth and sand, that I might reach the rock or the clay.” Immediately I couldn’t help bursting into song, whether in my head or out loud I am not even sure but these lines were shouting at me some way: “On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand” I wanted to go back in history and tell Mr. Descartes that I knew that what he was looking for wasn’t found in any studies but it is found in a person - Christ is the solid rock!! I realized that philosophy courses would be a fun way to witness to my classmates - I knew philosophy asked the “big questions” like what is truth, is there a God, how can we know what is real etc. But I also knew that I knew without a shadow of a doubt that the Bible had the ultimate answers. So after realizing that and getting some encouraging teachers and TAs, I decided to get a minor in philosophy. The best experience I had though was in a philosophy class about happiness, my professor actually asked me to write my final paper about the book of Job. It was amazing to get to dive into this book and tell my professor all about a God who is sovereign over everything, the creator of the universe and the source of true joy.”

This was incredibly helpful. I have started teaching a Worldview Class at our local Christian School. There is a whole chapter on Philosophy. I was able to show your video and it really helped some of the students understand the "why" behind studying philosophy as a Christian. Thank you for the helpful video!

An understanding of logic and philosophy will help one with Christian Apologetics. It will help understanding how to formulate arguments, syllogism, and avoid logical fallacies. When I studied Philosophy in college it was a great help (not to mention I find it interesting and Paul was obviously well acquainted with philosophy).

God never intended for us to dialogue with unbelievers about His existence. We are to reveal him by demonstrating his Glory and power. I didn't come to you with pursuasive words of human wisdom, but by demonstration of God's power by his Spirit so that your faith do not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.( 1 Cor.2:3-5;)

Nice helpful thoughts on this subject and book recommendations I’ll have to look into. Personally in my limited exposure to them, I’ve found Bahnsen and Van Til extremely helpful on this subject with their apologetics. I know they’re not widely accepted though I can’t understand why because they’re doing exactly what you said in this video: positing a godly and biblical perspective on worldly philosophy and providing Christian answers to these questions in a way that not only gives us the means to not become captive to these philosophies in our own thinking but also ways to defend our own faith against these vain teachings.

I do transcription for work. I can't get into detail, but these are official legal proceedings under oath. It's disturbing to hear how many people not only cannot speak in a logical train of thought, but they can't even follow it when someone else does. They don't even understand what it means to ASK A QUESTION. I kid you not! It's time for cross examination where you have to ask the opposing party questions about their testimony. They are told this not the time for statements or commentary or arguing with the person. Just ask a question, wait for the answer, and then ask the next question. I cannot tell you how many times people are unable to do this. They don't know what a question is, how to ask one. I used to think people were just being difficult. But it's happened so many times that I've come to the conclusion that some of these people are so ignorant that they genuinely do not understand what it means to ask a question. I can feel my blood pressure rising with every minute that passes and the nonsense they are saying that I have to transcribe. How do such people function in daily life?!

I have been blessed with a Pastor who is well informed on philosophy and heresy, so recognizes and refutes false teaching at its earliest emergence. He has been very helpful for me and for our congregation in avoiding the things that are leading many congregations into apostasy from Truth. In my earlier years I had ignorantly wandered into positive thinking and other New Age practices, resulting in inability to read my Bible and pray. Didn’t know what happened until someone mentioned that these sort of things happen in New Age. Got well educated in this demonic “theology”, so now can easily recognize and avoid such things.

I had to scan the transcript before watching because you had me worried for a minute! Why would anyone think this passage says we're not supposed to study philosophy at all? Do people not know how to read even in plain English? It clearly doesn't say that. Its says to not be taken in by it. Good grief! The fact that this is even a question shows how ignorant many Christians are. And shame on me for not being as strong as I wish to be in many areas. How are we going to know how to counter the godless ideas of this world if we don't even know what they are? Christians should be the most well read, intelligent, sharp minded people on the planet. It's part of worshiping God with "all our mind." Nobody ever talks about that. Willful ignorance is not a Christian virtue. One of the most depressing things in life to me is when "Christian fellowship" is just small talk. We should be talking about God's Word, other books we're reading, and how these things apply to the issues going on in culture today. Instead, people talk about sports or what they had for dinner or some other nonsense.

If philosophy is the study of wisdom and truth then philosophy is the worship of God who is Truth and the source of all Wisdom. There are also Sophists out there who would trick the elect and we need to be prepared to give an answer for the hope that is within us.

I kind of disagree. If it is your vocation or if you are simply purely interested in philosophy, by all means study it. However, an average person does not need to feel it obligatory to study it - I certainly do not feel need to study it and I cannot recall single moment where I would have had critical need of anything formulated by greek or later philosophers. Of course there must have been some bits of information and ideas, that might have been classified as philosophy or something talked about by philosophers, that I needed to deal with. However, those kind of things are in circulation in common human conversation and life and it is not like I needed to read a thick philosophy book for them. And I really do not care if I cannot call myself "well educated"...

The apostle Peter said "Men will exploit you with deceitful words" ( 2 Peter 2;3. 'deceitful, from greek PLASTOIS, fabricated, artificial e.t.c. where we get our eng;ish word 'plastic' from.) So the bible describes the 'word of God as like Gold & Silver, precious metals and the word of men like cheap, 'plastic'. non biodegradable, poisonous when burnt e.t.c. Philosophy being ',man made is mere 'plastic' compared with the 'word of God'. Hence Paul agreed with Peter it should be avoided ( Col 2:8).

To the degree that I am a philosopher and do not believe in God I feel I must object, although to be clear although I’m making a atheistic defense religious philosophical positions could make a case against this as well. While the speaker raises some valid concerns about not being "taken captive" by secular philosophies, he seems to fundamentally misunderstand the nature and value of philosophy from an atheist viewpoint. Philosophy is not merely a historical artifact or a quest for esoteric knowledge, but rather an essential method of rational inquiry and critical thinking. The great philosophers did not just ask "the right questions" - they developed rigorous logic, reasoned arguments, and analytical frameworks that are foundational to the pursuit of knowledge. Secular philosophy does not have to lead to nihilism or meaninglessness. Many branches of philosophy are deeply concerned with morality, ethics, justice and the good life. Philosophy teaches us how to think carefully and systematically about complex issues related to existence, knowledge, morality - issues that are just as relevant to atheists as theists. While certain philosophical conclusions may be incompatible with religious dogma, that does not negate the value of philosophical inquiry. In fact, free philosophical inquiry allows us to challenge assumed certainties and received traditions in order to seek truth. The speaker's claim that philosophy "comes up empty" while Christianity is "full" is absurd. There is no definitive "Christian philosophy"- rather, Christianity makes faith-based claims without philosophical justification. In contrast, philosophy develops reasoned arguments and applies intellectual rigor. Atheists need not "imbibe nihilistic philosophies" to feel existential frustration - we simply recognize that there are no easy answers to life's deepest questions. That recognition does not lead to despair but rather to an urgent sense of responsibility to create purpose and meaning for ourselves and others in the here and now. In summary, philosophy is a crucial framework for rational discourse, intellectual honesty and moral reasoning. Dismissing secular philosophy entails dismissing the principles of critical thought and skepticism that are essential to a free society. Atheists in particular have every reason to value and defend the tradition of philosophical inquiry against religious dogmatism.

Christianity is a set of beliefs - it does not make claims about anything. Christians make claims. Whether those beliefs that constitute Christianity are epistemically justified is a separate but meaningful question. I think they are. You're going to feel existential dread no matter what if you don't eventually come to the point of cognitive closure. Everyone needs to eventually "make up" their mind regarding the ultimate questions about life. It's impossible to live life in an uncertain instability, practically and philosophically. There is no real value in being a skeptic or questioner in and of itself.
