MyName Jeff the actress actually is deaf. look it up. at the end of a screening of the dubbed movie the end was a short documentary on how the actress really is deaf and wanted to play shoko because she related to her and how she thought she wouldnt go anywhere as a voice actress because of how she sounded.

It's about self acceptance, not redemption, neither main character actually gets redemption from the other. Shouko forgives shouya when he gives her the notebook because she never blamed him, she blamed herself. Shouya and Shouko's self hate is over the same thing but shouko's is unfounded. That's why they become romantically interested in each other, because they want the other to see it's not their fault and on the bridge shouko understand that it wasn't her fault and shouya understands that shouko forgives him, for real this time. The story is about romance and a lot of other things. Each person will see a different part of the image, that's why the movie's so good. The romance is also a very important part of the movie, it's not the main theme but it wasn't an after thought. Even in the flashback you can see that shouya liked shouko but when he couldn't speak to her it upset him and led him to bully her. Also romantic intent guides ueno's entire character arc.

i always tear up when they're fighting as kids and she says that she's trying her best. dub, sub. both are perfect.

It’s so adorable and yet so painful because you can she is just so frustrated

I cannot get over how amazing this actress was! Not only is she deaf voicing a deaf girl, but she also had to made her performance match the animation, which in itself is difficult to do even with the performance of other actors already done. All of these actors did such a good job in this movie! Not only do the kids sound their age (which is my problem in a lot of anime) and their voices sound like they could come from these characters. I love this film so much!

Imma have to to disagree with you. The dubbed actress is so much better at portraying shoukos feelings than the Japanese pop singer is. I just never felt any real emotion in her voice. but In the dubbed now that had me crying from the first time she tried to speak. You can really hear the dubbed actress giving it her all trying to say the words that shouko wanted to say. But the Japanese pop singer just sounds like she's lowering her voice and making it a bit more high pitched, she doesn't sound like she's invested in the character at all.

Yeah, for real tho, why can’t people understand it’s okay to like 2 things? I like both dub and sub. In my opinion, both actors and actresses did a great job with the lines they were given and both voice actresses for Shouko gave excellent performances. I point to the bridge scene, as I am very content with the result of both versions of the scene because of the amount of emotion in both deliveries. A lot of people say that the fact the English VA is deaf, it adds a more realistic sound to her voice because it’s what a deaf person actually sounds like, and the Japanese VA is somehow worse because she’s faking it. I don’t see how that’s an fair argument, just because she deaf doesn’t make her voice performance any better. It’s the same when celebrities are hired to voice lines in a game. They’re chosen because their voice in game would be authentic, but in reality, they can’t voice act for shit. I’m not saying English Shouko’s voice is shit, just her disability doesn’t improve her performance alone, it’s the effort of the actors and actresses giving it their all that really makes the voice acting in both versions truly great.

given his thought process throughout the movie the misunderstanding is understandable, while he shows he has feelings early on for her he says he is a terrible person and doesn't deserve to be happy. Also, if he interpreted it correctly, the movie would have been worse for it.

There are so many moments/things about this movie that relate to my life. One of them being this confession scene. I was about 15 yrs old, at the time i still felt more like a child like a 10 year old boy . (Well because I was Born with a brain that was behind others, -Side note my brain falls back a year or two in certain subjects meaning it would take me a lot longer to understand a subject- then other kids would, but that didn't stop me from graduating at 17.) It was on a Saturday morning, I use to take martial arts and class ended. I was sitting down waiting for my mother to finish up with her chat with friends and this girl came up to me with her phone out and didn't say a word. I knew who she was, she was a friend and well at the time I only say her as a friend. On her phone she wrote I love you. I told her 'who said that?' She didn't say anything but pointed to herself. I saw that and looked down thinking about what that ment(it happen so fast, I was prossesing lots in just a few seconds). In my head in was thinking about: Why did she type that? Who was it for? What's going on? Why is this happening? Then as soon as I finally got the picture it hit me she loved me I looked up to talk to her but she was hone. I never saw her again, I felt bad because she most have been frustrated by me because I didn't understand it all too well. If I would have understand it a bit sooner I would have gotten up from my seat and walk to the door and hugged her. Because that day she was going back to her home town.

@@gajaan316 In the manga at least they spelled it "I lub yoo", emphasizing the "oo" part at least. He also was at least a dozen feet away as she hadn't grabbed the bike, she just yelled it out at him as he was ridding off. But yeah definitely makes more sense in the original. One of those translation issues.

Shouko wins best girl of 2017 for me. Reasons: she's cute, kind, great character arc, and made me cry.

I feel very bad that the deaf can't hear music. The people who can hear, like me, often take the ability for granted in drastically different ways. Instead of interacting, all we do is shove earphones in our ears and block out the world around us, perhaps as an escape of happiness. I wish the deaf could hear what great music there is to know what joys there are in hearing.

Zero as someone who speaks Japanese, it’s clear as the English version what Shoko is saying. You just gotta learn the language to see that it’s the same.

Wow, they really hit it out of the park with this one. Everyone involved was fantastic, but MASSIVE props to Lexi Cowden, as well as Stepahnie Sheh and her team for such an authentic casting decision.

shouko is my damn senpai. she's so cute you cant help but love her. i swear i would argue for hours about that.

I can relate because I'm deaf too. but not that sort of talking because I got cochlear implants at the right time and I can speak normally. but one thing I wish I could use headphones like everyone . I can only just play it from phone 😫😫 Edit: thx everyone for your kind replies❤ I finally got a bluetooth device for my implants and now I can actually enjoy music comfortably.. Technology sure develops fasttt

You know, I was actually impressed that the writers didn’t have her change and made her stay the same until the end. Of course I’m not condoning her behavior but if you noticed, even she didn’t exactly have it easy. In the beginning she, ishida and the rest were all this one friend group, then all of a sudden this girl comes outta nowhere and then she just ruins everything. I believe she loved the life she had as a kid but just couldn’t accept the fact that things changed and that friendship she had in the past was gone. She probably spent the years before reuniting with Ishida in denial that all her friends were gone because of Shouko. And what more every time she tried talking to Shouko, all she’d get was an apology. After all those apologies they probably started to feel meaningless to her. In the end she was just left very frustrated and upset and bitter towards her.

Hey hey hey chill try to read the manga, Sahara, the girl used to be a close friend to Shoko in elementary and who also used to be bullied by Ueno in elementary, the three are getting close when they went to college. Remember that scene where Ueno said to Shoko "ba-ka/mo-ron" Shoko just laughed at it and didn't give a fck about what Ueno said meaning she is always friendly and ready to accept others. And also, I would pick Ueno over Kawai because you know Kawai's a narcissist rather than Ueno who saw her own mistakes and even blames herself for her bad attitude and in the manga you can clearly see Ueno is changing slowly.

I LITERALLY cried in the movie. She doesn't deserve the treatment she got and that meant a LOT to me. Throughout elementary school, I have been shoved around teased. Pretty much I have been bullied due to my speech impediment issues. Every day, I used to be pulled out of my class to go to a special classroom because I never had the learning capacity like the other kids. And the fact that Shoko has been bullied due to her disability is heart wrenching to me.

Man she's so cute ! Always watching over him, always caring about him ... She appears almost always like an angel in the light .

In Japanese the "moon" part has more sense. "Suki" means "I love you" and "tsuki" means "moon"

i love this movie. It doesn’t even focus on the ”romance,” or ”love story.” It focuses on what matters; the important and impact of visuals. It does this especially well, by giving us some beautiful animation. their studio being burned down brought me to tears when i found out about It.

I'm glad they got together at the end. It isn't outright said but is heavily implied.

Y’all in the manga they definitely get together. At the end of chapter 61, everyone goes their separate ways for college, which Shoko going to Tokyo. Right before she leaves he was about to confess his love but choked at the last second, which was jarring, but at the last chapter everybody reunites again and the two are shown to be holding hands and blushing, which is obviously showing that he admitted his love to her sooner or later during the time skip.

I can't recall if the anime covered it, but in the manga it was revealed that Naoko had convinced herself that Shoko was basically a big conniving faker. Not being deaf, but her personality and attitude and everything, and that she was purposely using her disability (or abusing, rather) for sympathy points. Not that it makes her actions ok, but at least it's a little less confusing.

When Shouko and Shouya were fighting, Shouko said "I'm helping you! I'm trying the best I can!" That shit hurt me 😞

Imo the english dubbed version is better because you can't understand why no one understands her in the original because it all just sounds the same. in the english dubbed version you know why she's hard to understand if you know what I mean.

That's exactly why whenever I told my friends to watch this, even if they were sub watchers that they had to see it in dub so it would make more sense.

If I was in this movie, I'd instantly be friends with her, even if she's different, I would still care for her.

Surprised nobody talks about when she was on her knees pleading for Shoyas mother’s forgiveness... that part always makes my heart shatter. Only because she genuinely is sorry and she really feels like everything is her fault... 😭

I love when shouko speaks in the English dub, she sounds so pure and innocent and adorable🥺 and its not because of sympathy its just when I hear it, it makes my heart melt and makes me cry🥺🥺 I can somewhat relate to her, not in a disabled way with her being deaf. But being depressed, always putting the blame on myself, always saying "its my fault" and wanting to dissappear because of always feeling like a burden and disappointment, and actually making an attempt

Honestly the part where she tugged her skirt in when she said "I love you" to Shoya always gets me everytime.

The fact that she tries to talk, the fact that she is so delicate. She is so adorable, the actress who did the voice who's deaf did an amazing job. I never felt so many emotions while watching an anime like this one, I'm glad I watched it with my two daughter's stuff like that happens at school in real life.

Watching a silent voice made me feel so much empathy for Shuko. If she was an actual person, I would give her the biggest hug I can give and due to bullying someone (especially those with disabilities)is something that really triggers me, fight people who were bullied her for being deaf. I Love her voice (especially as the English dubbed actress is deaf herself), as there is a sense of innocence and beauty in her voice, even if it isn’t like other people’s voices and you can’t help but fall in love with it. Shuko is someone you just want to protect, show love and support her because she’s amazing just the way she is and should be treated as an equal, a friend and a human being who is worthy of love. (when she said that she hated herself, I felt that because I feel the same way about myself a good amount of the time.) just have nothing but love for Shuko (honestly the best Anime girl of all time)

The Dub actress is the best version of Shouko for me. Her voice is amazing and fits the character so well (she's deaf too). How could anyone hate on her she's too damn cute.

Shouko's voice is so beautiful.

The deaf actress that plays Shoco did and amazing job in this anime. When she apologized to Shoya's mother broke my heart. And her confession of love 💕 as well. I love this anime movie 🍿, makes me cry every time.
