If it had been attached to her ear drum, it would have ripped, rendering her completely incapable of picking up sounds. Yet I'm fairly certain she was still wearing a hearing in both ears when Shoya became friends with her. It's only after an appointment to the doctor that she was shown to only wear one in the movie. It can be assumed that she has no hearing left in that ear. Still, I've wondered if the incident could have been at least partly responsible for that.
