#Short Tips #11 - Axle Tube “Cheat” - It may be silly doing a video about an axle tube workaround when I haven’t yet done a video about the “regular” approach to axle tubes, but I’ve had a couple situations come up recently where I couldn’t use the “normal” method because the axle tubes were going to be too short to allow axles to be slid in from both sides. I needed more support from the axle than that would allow…so I needed a workaround. I’ve seen people use beads to cap off the end of a cut axle, so I thought “why not just use a small part of an axle tube to make your own bead?”
In this video, I take aluminum 1/16” axle tube material and cut a SMALL piece off to make my own bead. The main axle tube has been mounted to the chassis of the casting. A complete length axle is slid through that tube with wheels mounted at each side, and then on the cut end of the axle, CA glue is used to attach the “bead” and close off that end of the axle.

Thanks Tony! It does come in handy when you need it.
I always end up gluing the wheel to the axle or tube...😂😂😂

🤣🤣🤣 It does take just a small amount of glue...and a really gentle touch 🤣🤣🤣
I currently am in that too short axle tube situation. This helped

Thanks Jamie! It really does and, like on the Pinks build I'm doing right now, about the only option.
Nice trick. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It comes in really handy sometimes!
Such a great tip Jim! What's a good place to buy the axle tube or just any axle materials? Just getting into custom diecasts and looking for locations to buy stuff for them. Thanks for sharing and have a great rest of your week 😃👍👍🤙

Thanks! It's really come in handy for me many times. I've picked up the tubing both at the local Hobby Lobby as well as off of Amazon. At the local hobby shop, such as Hobby Lobby, look for the K&S Metals rack of their offerings.

Thanks Brandon! It can come in handy.
Is the glue on bead/axle tube strong enough to handle being used on tracks? I want to repair my Mario Kart Hot Wheels and use them on the Mario Kart tracks.

I've never tried running it on a track, but it seems like it would be strong enough. It would seem that most of the pressure is on the axle itself and the bead only needs to keep the wheel from sliding off so there isn't a tremendous amount of pressure on it. The only way to be certain would be to give it a try on one.
Good tip buddy

Thanks Mark! It really came in handy on the casting sitting on my bench right now (the Pink Slips race casting)
What if you wanted to rig a custom steam roller attachment in front of an RC truck? Specifically, taking an aluminum cylinder 1.25" long and .25" diameter, and using 1/8" aluminum square bars to attach it to the body of the truck. If you drilled an axle hole through the cylinder, how would you build or install an axle to attach it to the bars?

Well this is a wild guess on my part, but I might try using a tube for the axle rather than a solid rod. Tap the ends of the rod for screws...probably put a washer at each end between the screws and the bars the axle is going through. Would have to give it a try to see.

What axel tube did you used?

In the video, I believe I'm using 1/16" K&S aluminum tubing, but when doing this "cheat", you want to use whatever tubing fits snugly over the axle, as some axles are thicker than others.
