    Excellent and informative video guys! It nicely touches on the whole process from planning, scouting, shooting, to processing. And your final shots are gorgeous! I’m glad you were able to see the eclipse from Chicago. I have to live vicariously through you from New Zealand! Take care! - Alex

    Awesome to see that your second plan worked out well! Here in Massachusetts/Maine, we had clouds in the far distance that obscured the low rising sun, so we had to wait a little before seeing the entire eclipse. Looking forward to the next one in 2024!

    I'm sure it would have been a different video if we showed up at the original spot not knowing there would be tons of boats in the way. There's another annular eclipse on October 14, 2023 in the Southwest. Photopiller reunion?

    Awesome adventure guys, We really enjoyed it. At our place the sun was already high up in the sky (max visibillity at 12.39, so we only managed to shoot some silhouette.)

    Thanks Rob! We're just happy that we got to see the very tail end of the eclipse here. Some of the views farther east/north of us where the eclipse was more dramatic are so amazing to see.

    I had perfect clear skies the evening before, but it was cloudy with wet snow the morning of the eclipse, but clear across the Frobisher Bay. I got the ring through the clouds, but they varied so much it was hard to switch between a filter and just using the clouds. Iqaluit location.

    I was at your original spot. I found a clear pathway with no boats blocking the lighthouse. But the sun started rising right behind it. So the shot I got that morning looked like Pac-Man was about to eat the building. I wish I would have thought of bracketing though.

    Great video. I also got a pic here in PA, did a 5 stop bracket as well. Did you use a solar filter?

  • @LonelySpeck

    @LonelySpeck

    I did not! The sun was low enough in Chicago that it was not necessary since the sun was filtered through lots of atmosphere. If it was higher, I would have needed a filter.

    For the annular eclipse of October 14, 2023... it will be around 10:30am when annularity takes place. It will be too high to get a long distant telephoto image. I will be among hoodoos of NW New Mexico. To get the eclipse in the same image, I can't use a 500mm telephoto lens unless I get rather close to a hoodoo and focus stack. Does that seem reasonable to you?

  • @LonelySpeck

    If it's high in the sky, I would recommend an eclipse filter.

    The Eclipse was on June 10 2021 but on your phone you're showing us PhotoPills on "June 11" @1:42. I know there is no difference in terms of Sunrise time and both Thursday and Friday had almost the same Sunrise around 5:25 a.m. (In New York and in your city more or less the same), but it would be better to show the real date in your video. I spent over 2 weeks just scouting every bit of New York Metro Area to find a treeless, building-less open area to shoot the Annular Partial Solar Eclipse. We had some clouds but the clouds gave us a break and mostly papered off the Maximum Eclipse moment which added drama to the photos. Early runners stopped to ask me what I was doing with two cameras on two tripods and snapped a shot with their phones which was impossible on my Android showing a blob of light as the Sun. I wish there was a new technology in an App such as PhotoPills to show the real North and not to rely on magnetometer/gyroscope in the phone. The Eclipse happened near NE (North East) and every time I got close to metal railings, PhotoPills showed me a different direction for the Sunrise. That's why it is important to wake up early with few days of the Eclipse and run a test at the exact location to make sure you're looking at the right direction. Being on top of the tallest building is the best choice which I couldn't do. Anyways, I Liked your video and really appreciate the time you spent to show us what you did. I would have made a video like yours but the heavy camera pack and hot weather in New York would have made me collapsed had I spent my energy on making a Vlog. Thank you.

    I think I must have set the plan a day on Photopills ahead when I showed that. Ultimately, I just wanted to see the rough direction of the sunrise and that got me close. In my experience, the gyro/compass accuracy on Apple devices is significantly better on PhotoPills AR. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    Why can’t anyone see the actual moon approaching and exiting 🤨🤷🏾‍♀️jes saying

    Ever wonder why sometimes you can't see the new moon phase? Same reason. It's not illuminated because the sun is behind it.

  • @Condoriaco

    Why do we only see half of the moon during a half moon? Because only half of the surface is being illuminated from earth’s perspective. A full moon, where the entire surface is illuminated from earths perspective, is the opposite of a new moon. A solar eclipse implies the moon is in new phase, which means the entire surface that is visible from earth is not being illuminated. Have you ever gone in your closet with the lights off? Yeah, you can’t really see things that aren’t being illuminated. 🤡 Jes saying
