Good luck with the plans for the eclipse. I would love to be at Shiprock for this one but we are now camping close to Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta so will have to shoot it from Cochiti Lake.

Getting ready for the total next year. Solar filter for sure! Now for the camera equipment...... LOL.

Great video! I'm getting around 85% from my backyard so I'll be staying home. I'm getting over 3 mins of totality next year! I'll be using two different telescopes this weekend for this. One will be using the same home made filter you showed. The other one will be using a Herschel wedge. Never used a wedge before, should be interesting.

It's a good thing you decided not to skip this one.. because Oct 14 and April 8 next year are gonna be the last ones over the lower 48 until 2045. So it's gonna be a minute. There is one up in Alaska in in 2033 and obviously eclipses happen all over the earth all the time, but the travel gets hard (also a lot of them are over oceans). Also note the sun moves fast, so you're gonna have to adjust aim constantly at long focal lengths. If you got a star tracker it can save a lot of fussing with the tripod head. It's hard to get a precise polar alignment during the day but you can get close enough to only have to readjust the composition every 20 minutes. Or get up before dawn and align to Polaris. I hit the road for my location in the morning, forecast calls for clear skies so it's looking promising! Hopefully my spot isn't jam packed.

Great tips! I've signed up for a workshop at Crater Lake National Park, Oregon and it isn't looking good for capturing the annular eclipse. They had a bunch of snow today and the prediction is for clouds on Saturday. Still, I'm looking forward to whatever the day brings me! Ya have to roll with the weather, right?

Will window solar film work to make my own filter? I read someone made it with that? 🤞 it works for me. 😂 Thanks for your detailed advise.

Man I have a 16.5 stop ND filter that I was going to use and I didn’t even think about UV… glad I watched this…

I mean, if that's what you have, it'll help for the photos. Just don't leave it pointing at the sun for too long and don't look at the sun directly through the viewfinder, use the lcd screen.

Great video I was looking around to see if I can find a filter that will work that I can get right away lol I have a ND Filter but don't think it will be dark enough,,, since this is happening tonight here in albuquerque But it won't be ship fast enough and I am still a beginner so I have no idea where I would be able to get one in town... But still looking forward to it... 🤘

If you have a good nd filter, and you're using a mirrorless camera, you could be okay, use the lcd screen. If you're using a dslr, DO NOT look through the viewfinder, just use the rear lcd screen.

Also, don't point it at the sun for too long, especially at longer focal lengths. The concentrated uv rays are dangerous for your sensor.

@doughgarcia6086 Yes, and so not look at the sun directly or through your viewfinder, even during totality. If you have the proper solar glasses, though, then you can look at the sun, but don't leave your camera pointed at it. An ND filter is the same as putting regular sunglasses on. It will only darken the visible light but will not filter or protect from the sun's radiation and uv rays. Since this is an annular eclipse, there will still be a significant enough portion of the sun showing during totality to damage eyes and sensors.

Tiffen sells a "Solar ND Filter". Will that protect my gear while shooting solar?

Doing a craze road trip. It will be a 1500 mile weekend sleeping in my truck and was planning to go the New Mexico. Chaco NHP is directly under the middle of the totality path and that is my planned area to shoot from. I am hopping to get a great landscape shot. I use Photopills on my phone and also use Photo Ephemeris on my computer. They have a great planning tool I use for researching my trips before I go. I payed for the upgraded version which allows me to look at a 3D model of the area and the shot. I also am taking out an old film camera. I will be shooting a Kodak Tourist with 620 black and white film (50 ISO). Does anyone have any experience with medium format film and eclipse photography? This thing will be a challenging as it has marks for only 6 f stops and only three shutter speeds (35,50,100). Any insight would be appreciated.

Oh wow, good luck with the trip! I haven't used medium format in well over 20 years now. With the limited apertures and shutter speed, you'll probably want some good solar filters. Looking directly into an old camera like that for the solar stuff can be really dangerous, so be careful.

Well, suppose you do not have a DSLR and do have a S23 Ultra? Is it out of the question to get a photograph of the Annular eclipse? Great information.

  • @BrentHall

I've never used a phone for eclipse shots, so idk how that would turn out. During totality you might be okay for a quick shot, but be very careful of looking that the sun and don't have your camera pointed at it for too long, as it can definitely fry your eyes and your sensor.

@BrentHall As you mentioned for all your DSLR followers put a filter in front of the lens? Wouldnt that be the same for the S23 Ultra? I bought a couple paper glasses to watch the eclipse and thought I could put it over the top of the lens of the S23 Ultra good idea?
