Oh, that's a painful watch! Like watching someone getting in a new car and trying to drive it without even knowing how to start it or where all the controls are. Hint for the video button and all the other buttons and dials, they can be remapped as to what they do so you can make them work like your Canon. That little lever around the AEL button has two positions which means that in the other position the buttons and dials can all be remapped again and then you can change between the two at will with the flick of the switch. I could go on about tuning the autofocus and altering things like how "sticky" it is etc but one last thing is that it does not autofocus on the bird when you are not touching the focus button, it is just putting a box around the bird to let you know it has seen the bird and will focus on it when you do press the focus button. Oh dear one more last thing, do try setting up SH2 which gives you blackout free shooting at 12.5, 16.7 and 25 fps with any lens and 50 fps with the Pro lenses all with continiuos autofocus. Pro Capture is done right and is a game changer when required for capturing the moment that is expected but your reflexes are too slow. Hopefully you will learn how to set it all up properly to your taste and then I am sure you will enjoy it.

Watching you struggle with the video settings, I imagine Camera Lady muttering "I TOLD him to read the manual, but NOOOO" 😂 I was at B&H today and had a chance to handle an OM-1. Feels pretty good!

Thanks for the video. Looking forward to see more impressions from you about the setup because I just got exactly the same to replace my Fuji x-t2 with xf 100-400 lens. So far - big improvement I see and feel. But before I pulled a trigger on that setup I was looking at R5 which is on discount now, but still went with OM because I was sold to their 150-400 pro lens and from size perspective it still allows me to carry it on my motorcycle when I ride to nature.

Looks amazingly sharp when it does get the focus.

Camera Lady is doing an awesome job! Beautiful video. As an Oly/OM convert from Canon, I am really loving this episode. Great results, and that's "only" the E-M1 mk 2 ! That white lens is incredibly expensive, but I'd suggest the OM-1 with the 300 f4 Pro prime as a remedy for your buffer, focusing, and affordability hurdles. Maybe add the 1.4 teleconverter.

Great video, Brent. I am going to be really interested to see how your feel about this rig as you use it over the next month. There several moments when I wanted to wrest the camera from your hands and set it up for you and I'm, sure in the end you'll work it out. I moved to the OM-1 with the 100-400 zoom and the 300f4 - which I use most of the time. This camera and these lenses absolutely rock for bird photography. Punching in for video should be as easy as using the dedicated movie button on top, once set up. Likewise, and the same as on a Canon body (I assume) I have several presets on the mode button which I rotate by feel when I have the camera up to my eye if I want to change from low speed (portraits) to high speed (bird in flight). The bird AF is spectacular on the OM-1 and supposed to be even further improved on the MkII you are borrowing. Lastly, I never worry about going to iso12800 or higher as so long as the shot is sharp either Lightroom Denoise or DxOPureRAW will sort it out for you. I agree about the 150-400, to expensive and too heavy but drop dead gorgeous from the samples I've seen. However, the 300f4 is probably in IQ terms as good as your 500f4 Canon - it is really that good - and it works fine with both the TC1.4 and TC2x extenders. Like I say, looking forward to how you feel about this system in a month. It is counter-intuitive compared to Canon and Nikon systems but it really is as good, imho.

Pretty impressive so far overall. Awesome video of the grebe vocalizing! I've never seen that in person, though finally got one flying a few months ago. Huge feet!

Great video! I'm rocking the Olympus (pre-OM Systems) OM-D E-M1x and 40-150 f/2.8 with 2x teleconverter and I'm really happy with it. One thing I've learned with the Olympus/OM Systems bodies is that you have to spend time configuring the button setup to your way of working. You can dial it in any way you want, and once you do it can feel almost like a natural extension of your arm. I hope to buy a better lens for birds sometime next year so I can really have fun with the system.

Can't wait to see your thoughts on this set up over time. Look forward to next video.

Great video showing the OM-1 V2 and the 150-400 zoom lens. I just test drove OM Systems new 150-600mm lens today with an OM-1 V1 - so, watching your video was very interesting to say the least. The 150-600 lens is a good lens, but it is heavy and some shots were a little soft, and as you noted, I had the same experience in that most of the keepers required a lot of post processing. Will play around with it again tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your experience with the OM system setup, looking forward to seeing more pics over the next month.

Watching this video I now realize that the continuous muttering of bird names while head is on a swivel is exactly what my family experiences when we are out together

I've been shooting Olympus (now called OM) for a number of years now and absolutely love it, you can completely customise the buttons to suit your preferences, it's worth spending an hour or 2 just configuring it the way you want it, there's tons of options (including the red button to instantly record video), it can be daunting at first, but once dialed in, I don't think you'd want to go back :) I do miss some ISO and sharpness sometimes, but the weight saved is worth it That lens though, jelly :D

I make the switch from Canon R5 to OM and the 150-400 f4.5. Took a bit to get the camera set up the way I like but I love it now. Get the video set up to turn on with the record when in any mode. I think what ever video set up you have in C3 with default when the button is pushed. Absolutely love the pro-capture feature once you get use to it and set up properly.

Thanks for the video. I also have the R5, R7 and the OM-1. They are tools. I have the OM-1 specifically for Macro photography. The OM-1 (for Macro) does things that neither Canon can do. In camera focus stacking with electronic shutter and flash. I know the R7 can do Depth composite but not with flash.

It'll be fun and interesting to see and hear your thoughts on another system beside Canon. It's the only way for me to experience it as I sure couldn't afford to switch from Canon (not that I want to). Enjoyed the video. Thanks!

This is really interesting. 🤠I switched a couple of months ago to the OM-1 ii. I love it. Don't be afraid to push the ISO to get your shutter speed up. That's where your softness is coming from. The sensor in this camera is not ISO invariant.

The OM1 is dual native IOS right?

Just a thought to deal with changing shutter speed. I have the 2 buttons on the front (next to the grip) set to C1 (birds in flight) and C2 set for perched/slow moving birds. Switching between the 2 is instantaneous and doesn't require moving your hand at all.

I do something very similar, but simply have the AFL/AEL Button programed to C1 (1/3200 Sec shutter speed & Pro-Capture, Auto ISO, Bird Detect) and the AF-ON Button programmed to C2 (1/3200 Sec, C-AF, Auto ISO, Bird Detect). I can easily reach either button with my thumb. If I'm shooting a 'bird on a stick', I just set my camera to Shutter Priority at a much slower speed, with Bird Detect On, S-AF, and Auto ISO. If I want to get a shot of him taking off, I simply press the ALF/AEL Button and let Pro Cap do its thing.

Thanks for the video! Going to be really curious your thoughts as you test drive it over the next month. I’ve been investigating the OM mark II as of late. There seems to be a lot of great features, but going to be most interested in the AF ability to stick to a target, ISO performance, and ultimately image quality. Also, how do images hold up to cropping? Shooting an R6 and 200-800 an OM mark II and 100-400 is very intriguing.

Brent, I’m using the exact same setup with the OM-1 mark i and 150-400 f4.5 Pro and I am fortunate enough to be owing a Nikon Z9 for event and work so I got a 500 PF lens to go with it for wildlife photography just for fun. All I have to say is that either system does everything well enough to say one is definitely better than the other. The Z9 with numerous of firmware updates, the autofocus is now probably a little ahead than my OM-1 mark I version but I would say it is like 95% hit rate compare to 88-90% for the OM-1 which is still very good most of the time. Both does Pro capture but Z9 only does jpeg to OM-1 Raw. OM-1 also shoots 50 fps raw to 120 fps Z9 in jpeg but 11 megapixel only. If you do other than bird and wildlife, then OM-1 does more, Live ND, Live composite, Star Af, high Res shot, focus bracketing and all the very light weight lenses for other type of photography. So for complete all rounder, it is hard to beat OM-1 and now the mark ii but if for bird photography only and video is priority, then Nikon z8 and z9 and the same probably apply to your R5 setup.

Great system for good and bright light, went from Nikon and fuji to OM. great technology and good lenses, but man did I have issues with the OM-1 and then what killed it for me was when I got back to shooting early mornings with challenging light, having to chase those files through DxO then LrC then DeNoise.. 6 months later I bought a Z8 and 400f4.5 for a trip to Botswana was not going to cover that trip with some equipment that I know is reliable. Came back, sold the OM-1 lost a lot of money as it has no used value. I kept the OM1 with 40-150 f2.8 as lightweight walk around wildlife set-up (not a small bird shooter) and is doing fine as second camera. But the ergonomics is so different from the Z8. So good luck enjoy.

The buttons are very customizable. I map the ISO button to select C1, and setup C1 for BIF so I can quickly switch to capture a bird in flight. Turn off IBIS for rapid panning (like BIF) it will induce micro blur and can't help anything. One annoying thing on OM1 mk1 at least is that writing to card a lot of buttons won't respond.

I strongly suggest you try the 150 - 600 mm lens while you have that camera, if you can get your hands on one. And even try combining both with the 2.0 teleconverter.

Those grebes have amazing underwater range!

Brent, I am very curious about your final findings. I don’t expect the OM-system to beat Canon’s IQ, but I am curious if you find the compromise in IQ acceptable considering the portability, weather sealing, IS, significantly lower price tag and computational in camera performance of the OM-system.

I didn't immediately realize the date (April 1st) but I immediately suspected that the title had to be some sort of clickbait, with your 500mm F4 acquired so recently. Well done. :-)

I honestly think with that combination, you are going to want to keep that lens 😂 . Also I have mft and find that in overcast days or bad light I can just set iso to 1600 and not think about the low light. It has really make shooting wildlife on long lenses easier to just keep it there.

I started with m43 because of weight/size restrictions when I was deploying a lot to okinawa, but have stuck with it as I got older thanks to back injuries. Nicest part is that there is a ton of glass and bodies to choose from. I mainly shoot Pany/lumix bodies (older Oly menus sucked really bad), but have a lot of Oly primes that work seamlessly on my G9ii and GX8. Wish I could make it out your way to try out that 150-400, but sadly my terminal leave doesn’t start till the beginning of May. I’ll be in Santa Fe for the summer though, so might see what workshops you have going on then.

You what's actually blowing my mind with this setup? It's way heavier than I thought. The body is the same exact weight as an R7, way heavier than an R8, and only like less than 0.5 lbs lighter than an R5/R6II. That's absolutely crazy. Also the 150-400 lens is 1.84 lbs HEAVEIER than my 100-500 was, and is still 0.3 lbs heavier than the new RF 200-800. So anyone wanting this for weight savings should think about that, but the size is still there. It's definitely compact. That's awesome that you'll be able to come visit Santa Fe! It's one of my favorite places ever. I'll be offering private workshops for wildlife, landscape, and astro all summer, in the Santa Fe/Abq area and all over NM, AZ, and potentially CO, so just email me anytime if you want to sign up for something.

@@BrentHall there isn’t much you can do to make a 150-400/4.5 smaller or lighter, the difference is that with m43 you get the FoV of 300-800 while still getting f4.5 for exposure. The Pany 100-400 is smaller/lighter, but it’s slower and a little less sharp. The m43 format does struggle in lower light, as you can’t escape the sensor size, but with the newer generation of sensors and DXO/Topaz you can get away with a lot. If you’re wanting to do more hybrid shooting, give the Pany G9ii a try.

Check out the price and weight of the Canon RF 800 f/4 for a fairer comparison to the 150-400.

Out of the box the red dot button gives you direct access to high res still images but it was originally the video quick start button. Simply reprogram it to its original function. The camera you have there is about the most programmable one on the market and unless you put some time into understanding it you will not only not get the best out of it you will come to false conclusions.

I really felt that "my knees" comment... 😢

Because you like doing astrophotography it would be nice if you would compare the stary sky feature that's present on the OM1 and OM5 with how you do it presently. I personally like both the full frame platform and the micro four-thirds I shoot the Canon R6 Mark II with the 100 to 500 and also an OM 5 with the 12-100 pro lens (FFE 24-200). OMD has much better weather sealing than Canon does.

If you didn't spend any time learning new camera, don't complain. I'm feeling the same lost and iritated when I have in my hands canon but the problem is not on the camera side...

I felt this same thing watching the video. He was quick to make judgements about Canon being better for hybrid shooters but he doesn't know how much of that was user error. I've never shot on an Olympus so I was looking for a more equal review instead of watching someone figure out a new camera system.

You need to watch Lee Hoy on how to set up that camera for birds and wildlife. I spent an entire day configuring and testing and configuring before I got mine set up the way that works for me. Big change for me coming from sony but I'm loving it so far. Not selling my Sony Gear but it sure is a fun camera. That pro capture is amazing!

Interesting to see this kit. For now, I’m sticking with Canon. Hey Brent can you give Canon a call and ask they to give us a high MP crop option in the new R5ii. 😂 That is the solution for reach for me with my RF 100-500. Thank you!

i'm really hoping you can figure out the focus pulsing issue. I've struggled with my (Mk I) OM-1 and the focus never seeming to settle on the subject (and consequently had a lot of doubt about how much of the problem is me vs the camera, being a new photographer, and if a shot is out of focus because of the AF pulsing, or for other reasons.) hopefully i can get a bit of perspective on the issue from your experience with this camera.

Also, you don't need to lock the dial, it's just there if you want to prevent accidentally changing modes, and hitting the video record button SHOULD shoot video for hybrid shooting, even from a photo mode like M, that's either something misconfigured or not working properly.

It took me a while to get used to the new menus and customization options on the OM-1 after shooting Canon for decades. Eventually I switched entirely to the OM-1 and selling off my R5- no regrets except when it comes to video.

Mike Lane on KZread good helpfully tips on om1 . 😮 I was amazed when I 1st looked at the title hopefully you can configure to replicate your r5 good luck 👍

Might try resetting all the menus. Record button should record. You can assign different functions to pretty much every button. Also, RTFM 😁 Make sure you have the latest firmware too.

@@BrentHallWait until you get to play with Live Composite -- if you haven't already. Use it to shoot a lighting storm with camera on a tripod, it will blow your mind.

Spent a couple of weeks working out weights & prices of various camera/lens set ups for birding as my Nikon gear was proving too heavy for my old bones. Tried a friend’s OM1 & 300f4 but though it was snappier and got you in close, there was no weight advantage. Many are moving to M4/3. Check those YT videos mentioned here by others.

I sold my R5 a little more than a year ago, to switch to my R7's. That was the best decision I could have made. The OM system looks very intriguing, but its not so much of a jump, if I were to do that coming from my current APS-C setups. It would have been a stronger draw for me if I still had my R5, which almost never gave me enough reach.

It's crazy that the OM1 mk ii weighs the same as the R7! And the 150-400 is actually 1.84 lbs heavier than the 100-500, and 0.3 lbs heaver than the new 200-800, so you can still get ALL the reach, and save weight with Canon. I had no idea this little system was so dense, lol.

@@BrentHall Yeah, kinda makes the point of the system moot unless you really need the physical size to be small. I'm currently see-sawing my decision whether to get the XF 150-600 f/5.6-8 for my XH2S or the 200-800 f/6.3-9 for my R5. The R5 has superior AF but the 200-800 is massive although light. Both systems are pretty close as far as pixels on target and f/stop. In my heart of hearts the Canon will be more practical but I just love that internal zooming Fuji.

​​@@BrentHallThe RF 200-800 is like a half pound heavier and much bulkier than the 150-400 plus the 150-400 is much sharper, And the R5 is half pound heavier also, I am Z8 Z9 user but also own the OM-1 Mark II and the M.Zuiko 150-400 which I love,Once you set it up the way you want your going to love it also pre capture is AWESOME, I'd watch Mike Lane for setting up. PS 20mpix on the OM-1 is like having 80mpix on FF.

@@HotGates true, but the 150-400 on the OM1 is only a 300-800mm equivalent, where the 200-800 is a 320-1280mm equivalent, which is WAY more useful to me. As far as "way sharper" I just haven't seen it. The 200-800 used correctly, then sized down for digital viewing (99% of most peoples uses) is basically as sharp as it gets. Heck, for that matter even a Big White F4 600mm, with or without TC, is just not a lot sharper. Practically undetectable difference when sized down. Sharpness is just hardly an argument anymore these days. Pretty much all the modern mirrorless lenses are sharp enough for digital viewing when used correctly.

@@Chris_Wolfgram Your using it on the R7 but with the tele engaged on the 150-400 Your at 1000mm, I've used the 200-800 on the R5 with not to great results but it was fine on a 24mpix camera like the R3.

I’d love to go to the that set up but it’s just my muscle memory after 20 years with canon layout just puts me off I tried a Nokia z7 think it was and that’s similar layout to the om1 and I was having a nightmare either the layout same when I got the r7 that layout was bad enough with that’s stupid wheel lol 😂

For BIF would you consider (or have you ever used?) mounting a dot sight into the hot-shoe to aid in aiming when using big zoom lenses? I have not done so but definitely considering it and it does not seem to be an expensive "mod"

It’s a great tool for capturing the really fast stuff like swifts & swallows. Just keep checking the alignment though as it’s easy to knock it out of whack! I’ve got some killer shots of birds going full tilt👌

7:53 Maybe your camera was in full manual mode (M mode dial) including manual focus? As an owner of Olympus OM1 i find this video interesting.Pretty sure i was lost for a second in the camera functions if you put some Canon R5 in my hands.Just saying 😄

Cruise over to Mike Lane’s channel. He uses this same kit, and has used Olympus, prior to OM Systems. He uses two kits: this one for stills, and a separate Panasonic GS or GX something or other. He says the vids on this OM System kit is difficult.

Haha it would have helped if you'd read the manual and set up the camera first *slaps head*. I had a few issues at first moving from Sony but damn the OM is so good, insanely good IBIS and the focus-limiter (in the camera not the lens) is great for setting up 3 different ranges you can quickly switch to that ensures you don't focus on the BG. Even before we get to the 60+fps and Pro-Capture (captures shots before you hit the shutter button).

Awesome video as usual. Thanks a lot! Curious to know if you'll keep it or get back to the R5. When I decided to ditch Canon, I was very excited about the OM-1 Mark II (more precisely, the hype around it). Then I looked at the lenses for wildlife and started having doubts: for primes, the only reasonable option was the Panasonic Elmarit 200mm f/2.8 (costs about $3000 for a full frame equivalent 400mm f5.6 - add $500 for a 1.4TC to get an equivalent 560mm f8); for zooms, there are several that are not very expensive but not very good either, or the M. Zuiko for an eye watering $7500 (yes, it has very good reach but at an equivalent full frame f9, it is on the slow side).

A few years back OLY were going to the wall and along came a capital investment company with no background in cameras. Their previous track record was buying Sony Vaio and changing it from a loss making company producing magnificaent laptops to a loss making company producing crud. So their previous, isn't good. And who knows how long they will keep the Oly name and actually function. They have a habit of approaching high(ish) profile wildlife camera KZreadrs and paying them off..... I mean contracting their services as "an ambassador". The question is whether you need the money. Unfortunately, every other KZreadr who switched did the same thing. "Will I, won't I." Build the crescendo and suddenly they do. I guess some of the people are fooled some of the time.

Not sure I'm digging the implications here! 😑I certainly can't speak for any other photographers/youtubers, but I can definitely guarantee you that I'm not being paid off by anyone. For me, this is a one time loan. No money was exchanged, and no deliverables were required, at all. They don't even know that I made this video, or any future video I might make with/about it. So far, I do like the setup, but I don't love it, and I certainly am not going to switch. The only way I would ever use this system personally, is if someone straight up gave it to me, and even then it would only be a backup or maybe quick recon travel option or something, but even then, personally I'm struggling to see why I wouldn't just get a 200-800 to pair with my R6II as a backup, or even my R5 as a smaller travel setup when I don't want to bring out the big prime. I think the system has its merits and some very cool features, and can see the appeal for certain people, but I'm not only too invested in full frame (and too poor to try and switch), but also very very...very happy with my current gear. That being said, I do enjoy being in a position where I'm given the opportunity to try other stuff, not just because I like gear and tech in general, but because others might enjoy seeing the content, and it might even help someone out there, somehow.

@@BrentHallI'll take your word that you haven't taken the money and that would be great to see. Too many have been selling their souls, their channel plateaux and they are suddenly changing their gear. The problem is it never works. Some have virtually left KZread after trying it because their subscribers have just switched off. The interesting thing is the number of people who swear blind that the full size sensor is essential, that APS-C doesn't look as good - the next minute they are shooting M43. If you want a great birding camera try the X-H2S, you can use all your old Canon lenses with it via a Fringer. It's the camera that the R7 should have been. The EF 100-400 Mk2 actually performs way faster than it does on the 7D Mk2. 40fps, stacked sensor and weather sealed properly (not like the R7). Try it, the switch is very easy and tbh, don't think I'll change for a long time.

I bought an OMD mkiv as a travel camera, totally hate it! Chucked it in a cupboard now and annoyed that I wasted money so back to my trusty R5.

300mm F4 is an amazing lens but its very heavy... I wish Canon does something similar to Sony and come up with a lighter prime 300mm.

At least the Arca swiss foot mount has a leg up on Canon, even if you had teething issues with everything else. hahaha

I have the OM1 and 150-400tc. The Arca-Swiss foot is sensible … BUT…. I never use a tripod with this combo, even at efl 1000mm. I’m 73 with severe osteo arthritis of the spine, also some tremors. The combo of IBIS with the lens AF means that I don’t need an extra lump of metal any more, so I can carry the combo all day holding the handle (formerly known as a lens foot ;-)). Enjoy, after spending a while setting the options!

Mark lane frps is UK birding channel I follow for a whil and the host is using Om system for long time and he's got some good videos about using the system and it's pros and cons it's worth checking if you are not familiar with it. It's small Chanel definitely not mainstream and I recommend it to you genuinely as long time subscriber not in any way to divert from your content a enjoy for so long.

Mike Lane is my go to channel for OM-1 and birds.

The adage is "Date the body, marry the lens." But that doesn't do any good when the body can't nail focus on a moving subject. Interested in seeing what more testing brings, but I'll bet even a "lowly" R10 could have nailed more than three shots on the BIF.

Trust me, those AF results were totally the lack of experience in using the camera and lens. It performs much better than in this video, and Brent explained that he had just gotten the set up.

There are so many custom options that it took me several weeks to reset the mind and body.

It would be cool to see you try out a Sony camera if you could borrow or rent it

Sony did reach out to me a couple of years ago, and they sent me some gear to try out and I was going to do some stuff with it, but unfortunately, a couple days after I got the gear, my dad died and I had to go see him and family for a while and had to send the gear back early. Maybe I'll try again with them at some point.

@@BrentHall if you do, you should try out the a7rv. I own it and it’s a great camera. I’m curious to see how the autofocus compares to the canon r5.

I mostly take wildlife particularly BIF and a bit of landscape photography. Thing is that I have actually done this… moved from the R5 with the 100 a 500 to OM1 and 150-400. I think that you need to set up your OM1 correctly, I’d recommend looking at Espen Helland’s You Tube on how he sets his up. I have C1 programmed for static birds, flick the dial to C2 for Procapture at 50fps, back button focus, Continuous focus, full area, auto focus, bird detect on, use the function switch to swap between full area and spot focus modes, program a front button for 2x digital zoom. … if you learn how to use it, I think it blows the R5 away, but it will likely take you a month to get to grips with it. Don’t forget that you are looking at the equivalent of 300 to 1,000 mm. So don’t be afraid to zoom back a bit to get started.

I sold my R5(didn't have the 100-500) and bought a used G9. While the AF isn't quite on the same level, I've had good results, and the Panasonic/Leica 100-400 is barely larger and heavier than the RF 100-400, while being faster and weather sealed. I'm happy with the move.

Nice video, but the colours in the video seem off, look at the sky. It's a bit like using way to much shadow/highlight in a photo.

People didn't even noticed it's 1st APRIL

You guys have it too easy over there you just point your cameras and things and take shots LOL Everything in the UK just instantly runs away the second it hears, see's or smells you! 😂

🤣🤣🤣...yeah, for ducks in a pond maybe...but you should come out with me for some actual wildlife over here. In the backcountry of New Mexico, remote mountains and high deserts, where there's hunting seasons, and few people around. Most every other type wildlife out here is extremely hard for me to get close to, let alone get decent images. Where I live there aren't any cool national parks like Yellowstone where you can just photograph a bear from your car or walk up to a herd of elk. We have all that stuff here in my area, but it's legit wild area and it's so hard to photograph stuff out here that it's really frustrating most of the time, especially as a youtuber who wants to make wildlife videos. That's why most of the wildlife videos I make are in places where wildlife is more reliable, like this lake, and places like bosque del apache wildlife reserve. I film videos in places like that so that you guys have something to actually see, rather than me sitting in a camo ghillie suit or pop up blind in the middle of nowhere with little to no success and nothing happing for hours on end. 😉🙃

Personally i'm not a fan of MFT because of how many marketing lies are told and how oblivious most users are to (and how firmly they stand up for them). Just to mention it: 400mm F/4.5 is NOT 800mm F/4.5, the sensor size does NOT affect the photons captured in any way, ISO100 is NOT the same for different sensors (even within the same format it's different), and finally, MFT is _barely_ lighter and smaller and far from having a better price-to-performance ratio. I dont expect anyone to have extensive engineering/physics background knowledge, but it really drives me nuts how firmly the marketing lies are re-told, and how little will to accept the truth many people have for that matter. As an example, the 150-400 F/4.5 would be compareable to a 300-800 F/9, and if i compare it to the 200-800, which has more focal range and a faster aperture at shorter focal lengths, the 200-800 is barely any longer (0,2cm) or heavier (175g), and costs roughly 1/3rd of the price. Granted, the 150-400 has a 1.25xTC, but in my eyes, the two lenses are rather compareable, asides from the price. And honestly, considering how good the AF and IS are on the 200-800, i heavily doubt the image quality alone would justify 3x the price...

You're preaching to the choir homie. As a matter of fact, I do have a degree in physics, and one in chemistry, and another one in geochemistry, and I spent lots of time in the navy taking optical physics classes and working in that field. I'm certainly not arguing the physics, and I'm definitely not trying to get people to switch one way or the other. I'm simply trying something out to see how it feels because even though I'm a scientist too, I rather focus on how things feel versus stats and numbers and all that. If anything, after trying this out, I don't see why I personally would ever pick it over an R5 with a 200-800. But that's just me. I can still see the appeal for this system for a lot of people, but definitely not for the weight savings, lol, because that's not the case anymore. Size, yes, but not weight. I had no idea how dense this little camera was. It's the same weight as an r7, way heavier than an r8, and barely lighter than an r5!

You take a photo with MFT, e.g. with 4.5 and 1/1000 sec and iso 800, then the photo would be too dark at aperature 9 FF!

@@richardfink7666 That's because ISO800 is not ISO800 ^^. that's exactly one of the lies i mentioned above. I've got myself a degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in photonics, so i could tell you basically everything that happens both optically and electrically in the process of taking a picture. And as i'll explain below, there are a lot of lies and deception, _exactly_ in order to make consumers believe something false. And since most photographers aren't scientists/engineers, don't expect them to know what's going on. In short, ISO is scaled for each individual sensor in order to reflect subjective perception. So, you'd expect different cameras to "look the same brightness" at the same apertures, shutter speeds and ISO. But smaller pixels gather less photons, thus the signal has to be amplified more. A 20MP MFT has to amplify the signal 4x more compared to a 20MP FF camera, if the circumstances are identical. BUT even though the amplification is 4x greater, the ISO number is *called* the same. From an engineering/physics point of view, ISO800 on MFT is identical to ISO3200 on a FF (assuming the same MP). That's the primary fact especially MFT companies don't want anyone to know, and the reason why 400mm F/4.5 ISO800 MFT gives perfectly identical results to 800mm F/9 ISO3200 FF in every single way (angle/field of view, noise, brightness and depth of field).

@@BrentHallglad to see you'd prefer the 200-800mm over this combination. Have you ever had the chance to try it out for yourself? If not, i'd really hope so, i think you'd really enjoy it. The zooming resistance is a bit harsh and the weight is not as amazing as the 100-500, but considering you get 300mm closer and have a faster native aperture compared to the 100-500 with TC, i think the lens is really a great design, especially at that price.

I’ve gotten to play with m43, Fuji apsc, Sony FF, and a Hassy MF in a controlled/lit studio environment. Given slight variation in a company’s ISO labeling, and that we use inaccurate F-stops instead of T-stops… I can tell you that F8 at iso 400 is more or less the same no matter what sensor size you use (same with F2.8 iso200 and etc). DoF will obviously be different depending on the FoV of the lens vs it’s sensor size. But light is light. My background isn’t optics, but it is in RDT&E for cryptography and radio systems (RF/antenna theory is surprisingly close to light/photon/sensor theory) so I am willing to accept my own small sample results for myself. And no, the 150-400/4.5 isn’t equivalent to a 300-800/9 as far as exposure, but it is equivalent to f9 in DoF.

IF that lens was not $7500 but $2500 i would have swapped Canon to OM-1 long ago. But OM can kiss my arse - im not spending 8k on overpriced lens Nikon can produce for under 3K.

I always have to wonder how many of these videos are quietly sponsored by OM system because all of them are using a $7500 lens. The camera has a lot less to do with the images than the lens choice.

Well I certainly can't speak for anyone else, but this video is most definitely not sponsored. There was no money exchanged, no contract signed (other than one saying I'm liable for damages, lol), and no deliverables required. OM systems doesn't even know I made this video. And also, when they breached out to me, I actually asked for the 300 f4 because I thought that was more along the lines of what I or most other people could plausibly afford. Another also...I originally didn't even know about this lens or that it was that expensive, which is why I mentioned that in the video as well. If I would have known about the new 1150-600, I probably would have asked for that instead as well.

@BrentHall yeah exactly my point tho. Nothing against you at all of course. OM system loves to advertise through KZreadrs with their most expensive lens as if it is obtainable. Definitely more realistic to compare the 150-600..but that wouldn't look as good for OM lol

Personally though, I don't consider this click-bait, nor manufacturer sponsored content, as firstly, I really did ditch my canon to try out the OM system, and secondly, this is not sponsored at all. They loaned me the gear for a month so I could try it. No strings attached, no contract, no deliverables, nothing. they don't even know I made this video. And all of this was mentioned in the video. If my videos aren't what you want to see then you definitely should unsubscribe. I hope you find some better content that you're looking for out there.

But this wasn't an April fools video...it's just me trying out a new system and going out for a day of wildlife photography.

Let me make this real quick...M43rds is not up to FF when it comes to fast moving sport.

OM is great for mid day sun like on your video...once it passes 3pm..good luck with low light. Not good enough for me.
