Shooting the .50 Caliber Colt Dragoon

This is a Arm-San Marco revolver made in the 1980s. Dragoon are normally made in .44 caliber but a few were produced in .49 caliber which is the ball size used in .50 muzzle loading rifles. I will provide some background on the gun and test fire it to show potential accuracy.

For those shooting .50 cal plains type rifles, this would be an excellent companion piece. I am shocked this didn't catch on. The history geek in me first thinks, "No one want's a repro that never existed." But then look at all the .44 1851 Navy revolvers out there. I kinda want one now..

Yes, I'm suprised they did not sell more of them for those who want to simplify ammo. But, the bore size can be misleading when it comes to actual knock down power. A heavy .45 259 grain conical in a standard Dragoon would offer more than the round ball in the .50.

I owned one of these a few years ago, I purchased from someone that had no idea what they had, nor did I at the time. I paid 300. Tried loading .454 on my first outing, and you can imagine what happened. I eventually miced it at .475-476. I proceeded to load it with .490 balls, and was amazed. Hey I've got a question for you you ever thought of using a PA type chronicle bullet in that revolver with a button patch that's a 240 grain projectile for a Kentucky long rifle but it's the perfect projectile to put inside that revolver for better accuracy for deer hunting it's almost like a buffalo bullet a hollowed out base and you put a button patch on top of it you got yourself a deadly deer killing pistol right there that is the most awesome pistol I've ever seen I like to see you shoot it a target with a PA type chronicle bullet for a 50 caliber out of that revolver with 45 grains of powder that will not down anything it gets into your front sight that is an awesome way of putting meat in the freezer the carnicle bullet is a 490 diameter 50 caliber PA type chronicle bullet that would do anything that you need to do

Do you know if the common sight picture back then was a “fine bead”, where you just have the very tip of the front sight visible in the bottom of the rear notch? My dad taught me to aim that way back in the 1960’s, rather than today’s practice of lining up the top of the bead with the top of the rear sight. Try it and see how much that helps.

However the script and markings on your cylinder lead me to believe that maybe mine are ASMs. Mine don't have any PN or proof marks that I've found and I assume they've been defarb'ed. @@robertrobert7924 on almost every pistol stock I have seen (mid 1700's- early 1900's), generally there is either a hole in the butt of the grip/low on the backstrap or a set of pins soldered on to the grip frame to attach a hook; and this hook is usually pinned/welded into the metal fitting on the "wrist" of the stock. Also, in this metal fitting, there is a hole through which a threaded rod passes, to which another hook is welded/soldered/formed, which hooks into another hole/depression or onto another set of pins high on the grip. The threaded rod then has a nut threaded on to tighten and loosen the entire thing to get it on and off. Look up "S&W's Pistol-Carbine for the South Australian Police" (Forgotten Weapons), to get an idea of what I'm talking about. They can be put together pretty simply, after all, there were pistols in the 1700's that had this set-up.

I remember advertisements and a puff write up, but these honkers never made it in the markets. Man killer, not horse killer. 50 Rem. Roller C F might have made a neato converter cartridge, but not a match here. Remember all of these are rifled for round balls. So they don’t fully stabilize longer bullets. To duplicate a 45 Scofield’s 230 gr. Slug with a round ball requires a five shot cylinder version of the Dragoon or Walker. 54 cal. Harper’s Ferry Lewis and Clark Flintlocks used a .520-.530” ball with a thick patch, including frontier Indian tanned leather. A 220 gr. Bullet was used from 1803, through 1903 in rifles. And then John Browning introduced the 1904 vintage 45 acp handgun and submachine gun cartridge.

The chambers are canted out one half degree to squeeze in the larger Schofield rims. This is licensed off a Howell patent?? But Colt did the same with their short lived 476 bore six shooter. The Dragoons use larger dia. arbors which crowd the Schofield rims from the center out, not counting the ratchets which Taylor’s put mine, at least in the backing plate, holding six firing pins. I e mailed Howell about milling a set of 45 Colt rim recesses into one of his 45 acp converters for 45 Cowboy Special ammo, but he refused to. So I’ve purchased a Ruger New Vaquero in 45 acp which was hand picked at Lipsey’s to have the necessary clearances at the back of the Birdshead’s blued cylinder. Thanks for showing that. Hmm. Well I could sort of see a use for it if a person had a 50 ML rifle that took 490 ball and wanted to use the same ammunition. On the other hand the pistol and rifle wouldn’t necessarily use the same powder. Although they could, it wouldn’t be optimum. So the 490 is going to weigh what, around 175, to not quite 180? So as I recall I can get 45 grains under a compact 225 grain conical (Accurate Molds 45-225L) in a Walker with room for a lube cookie underneath. 40 grains or so in the 44 Dragoon with the same bullet. So in terms of ballistic performance, or KE, the 44 with a conical still equals or beats the 50 with RB. That’s not to say I wouldn’t own one if given the opportunity though. It’s kind of a cool idea!

You are exactly right. This might be of utility if you had a .50 rifle and wanted to keep the same round balls in your shooting pouch. Other wise, a 259 grain Dragoon bullet in a .44 would offer more energy than the 175 grn round ball in this .49 caliber revolver.

No, what you saw fly by was a just a bird passing through. If the bird had a accidental discharge. he musta been too embarrassed to stop and talk about it.

Why not set up an aiming point bellow the impact area and take out the variable of an “imaginary” aiming point?

Fermin, the intro is a few bars to an instrumental version of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." This came from a very old CD. You can find many versions of it on You Tube.

@@StevenMMan Somthing to keep in mind, a .44 conical bullet is much heavier than a .490 round ball. So, you can actually get more FT LBs of energy from a .44 than you can with this .50 using a round ball.

@Eras Gone Historical Molds correct. I've been using conicals in Remingtons since about 1982. I love your work and the historical accuracy of said accomplishments. Me last couple of years I've want ahead and design my own bullets. Probably never able to sell any as I at the age and heath to really get to serious about it. I have bullets in the all three main calibers, but mainly focused is on .44 for my Grizzly country home. Jeremy of leverguns50 has tested two of my lightest at 165, 190 grains. And the tested my heaviest of my walker bullets at 270 lever guns got his walker near 1000fps for completepenetration ofv32" of gel. Based on his test my lead isn't as pure as i thought. If you look it up you can see what i have does differ from Kaido, but again not willing to call it a success. Yes I was a long time Wyoming resident. If your interested in just seeing some pictures of what I have put together I be glad to follow up. This my special approach to single shot muzzeloader with still a bp backup. Recently I have add a Rodgers and Spencer to my test platforms. Mountain man

I was about to jump all over you over the .50 issue. So this one is just one of the other unhistorical versions of the original Colts. No big deal.

I never cared for ASM quality. They always look the cheapest made out of all the Black Powder manufacturers. Still an Interesting variation. Not authentic so it's not for me, but Interesting. Still it looks like they took the standard cylinder and reamed larger chambers into it. Even though it is modern steel and theoretically stronger, I would still be very nervous about putting large charges through it. I would stick to 25-30 grains and no more, especially if using a large slug in the chamber.

Hey don't you understand when you pull that hammer back the rear sight is on the hammer it's notched that is your rear sight you don't need to put a rear sight on that revolver on the barrel you look at the hammer and the hammer is your rear sight it's notched don't you realize that when you pull back a 44 caliber cap and ball revolver it is notched on every coat revolver that's your rear sight use it that way

  • @ericbainter826

I think he understands about the notch. The “rifle” sights on the rear of the barrel are historically correct for a subset of Dragoons, 1851/1861 Navy models, and 1860 Army models that came from the factory modified to take a shoulder stock like this one: www.icollector.com/item.aspx?i=15999664. He notes that it’s odd that ASM put on these sights but not the other modifications that allow attachment of a reproduction stock. But then it’s also odd that ASM made this an ahistorical .50 cal. Fun tho.
