Shooting Kodak ColorPlus 200 - A Budget Film That Delivers!

I fell in love with this budget film stock during a recent 3 day trip to North Wales. I shot the whole trip exclusively on Kodak Color Plus 200, a colour negative film i'd never tried before, and in this video I share the photos from that first roll of film. I also wanted to share some of the beautiful places I visited during this trip.

Thanks for watching Chris, really appreciate your support! It's great to hear you're thinking about film photography and I completely understand your hesitation or perhaps reservation because it certainly is more costly than digital. That being said, there's just something about the process of shooting film that is immensely satisfying. There's the feeling of anticipation when you have no instant feedback of what you've shot and there's the more considered style of shooting - I find every time I shoot film I take so much care and attention and I think that benefits our photography greatly! I think if, like me, you only shoot film occasionally, but you take that experience and apply it to your digital photography then it can be really beneficial - we could all do with slowing down a bit in the digital age :). Thanks so much for subscribing! That really means the world! Hopefully see you for the next video next week 👍🏻

When I go out and about with my camera, I manage to fit three spare lenses in my waist bag. My setup is usually 28 f/2.8, 35 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4 and 135 f/2.8 (one of which is attached to the camera, obviously). I would be willing to swap out the tele for a 70-200 zoom but I've had poor results with old zooms, sharpness-wise. An 85 would hit the spot too, possibly replacing the 35, but these puppies cost an arm and a leg. As for the film stock, I often shoot Kodak ColorPlus 200 and I haven't been disappointed so far. I prefer it to Gold or Fujifilm C200 (which is just rebranded Kodak Gold nowadays) because the greens and yellows seem less overwhelming on ColorPlus and the palette is overall a bit more neutral. Good photos, good video. Thanks for uploading this, Chris.

I’m actually looking into a waist bag because I’d like to be a little better with my pack when I’m out! They seem much more accessible! And great to know you can fit so many! 👌🏻 I’m having the same trouble with sharpness with my old telephoto! I don’t shoot telephoto often though. I’ve actually just bought a few rolls of Kodak Gold because I’m keen to see how it compares! Going to shoot some this weekend and I’ll be sure to share some photos from this roll on the channel too! 😊 Thanks for watching man!

@@chrisharveyphotography yeah, a 3 litre military waist bag is perfect for photo walks. I can't recommend it enough. It fits 3 smaller lenses or one bigger lens plus a filter pack in the main compartment. In the other compartments, I usually have a mat for sitting down/kneeling on dirty/wet surfaces (useful in woodlands), a mosquito spray, light meter, shutter release cable, spare batteries, lens caps from the currently used lens. The strap is great for hanging a travel tripod on it. I've also got straps for fixing a water bottle. The only thing that won't fit is the camera itself. This setup requires a fairly careful choice of gear I pack but it's lightweight, accessible and most importantly, keeps 100% of the weight on the hips rather than the back. My spine is really thankful for that.

POV format works well, Chris - voice-over and mellow music pluses. Can’t say I’m a fan of wires in the frame, though, unless they are so prominent as to show viewers clear intention. (Sorry, not buying the “wires represent the new” excuse😊.) Muted colors of this film stock fit the venue. Long ago I shot Extachrome 64 / 400, and Agfachrome 64 for bolder colors. Sadly the slides faded to non-usability. Tip: to squeeze out an extra frame or two, load camera in a changing bag and advance film only one frame. No lens hood? What kind of manual focus mechanism does the Minolta have - e.g., rangefinder/split screen? Makes a difference in accuracy. BTW, I used to watch “The Prisoner” - weird theme; hero had a number and his nemesis always wanted to know why he resigned (as a spy). Spoiler - he escapes in the final episode. Cheers!

Hi Paul! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Always appreciate hearing your thoughts! I’m glad to hear you felt this video format worked well! That’s ok, it’s all subjective isn’t it! That’s the beauty of photography - we all interpret things differently 😊 Do you still dabble with film photography? Or do prefer digital these days? I definitely need to watch The Prisoner, we were saying this as we were walking around because I’ve never seen it 😄 don’t worry about spoilers!

@@chrisharveyphotography Am all digital. Don’t miss film limitations and all the extra gear and chemicals used to process film and prints. Still have the old B&W negatives - fun to digitize them myself. You should try digitizing your developed film - easy, and you can start with simple scanning using your smartphone, or macro lens on digital camera. Might make a good YT series.

Great video and your explanation of times when you may want to choose Film over digital is bang on the money I feel. Colour plus is a favourite of mine and is affordable enough. Also, if im not mistaken, it is the oldest continuing kodak film that is still in production and has remained unchanged in its chemical recipe. I could be wrong tho 😅

If you are not sure about your 80-200 lens (Tokina / Haimex I guess?) try out Minolta's own f4 variant, known as "beer can". That lens is exceptionally sharp and detailed, and most important of all, cheap. If you can find a clean copy that is...
