Shooting in Los Angeles

I was extremely fortunate to be able to stay in Venice, LA for a week. Here are some of the images I took on my Mamiya 7 and Contax T2 during my stay.

    Thanks! Learning all of it is half the fun, there's still a bunch I know nothing about, the first thing i'd definitely recommend is overexposing some good colour film - even do some exposure tests yourself taking pictures of the same subject at different settings to figure out the look you most prefer and how to achieve it

Do you use Reddit by any chance? There's a sub-reddit, which is like a mini forum, called r/analog and its all about film photography. Hey, I've been really interested in film photography for a while and I think I want to finally take the leap. I think I want to start shooting in medium format. Would you recommend this? If so, what cameras would you recommend? Or do you think it would be better to start with 35mm? I'm not even completely positive I've said this correctly, but I'd appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, man. Keep up the great work.

  • @NegativeFeedback

    @NegativeFeedback

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hey! I'd say to start with 35mm to be honest, you have a lot more shots per roll, and it's cheaper so you'll probably have a much easier time getting used to it. No harm buying a 35mm for a few months and then selling to upgrade though! I'd recommend to get an olympus om10 to start off with, and a cheap medium format to try is the mamiya 645. it's also notable to say that buying the more expensive film makes a big difference, especially in exposure latitude, meaning the exposures are far more forgiving

    travelling with film is fine, its only if you are subjecting your exposed film to xrays multiple times. x ray machines in the past used to be much stronger, and it was always a no no to travel with any film, exposed or not - it would fog it. now its not as issue, i travel with film all the time, never had any problems.

    Fabulous shots and a very cool channel. Can I ask a bit of a noob question. You say you over exposed by a stop and then meter for the shadows. To over expose do you just shoot at 200 iso instead of the 400 box speed or do you adjust shutter speed and or aperture by a stop? Regards.

  • @Li0nsmane1

    @Li0nsmane1

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yep just set the ISO setting on ur camera 1 stop 'slower', so if the film is advertised as ISO400 then shoot it at as ISO200. You can also set the exposure compensation dial on ur camera to +1 if your camera has one of those. There is so much exposure latitude in a good professional colour negative film like Portra 400 than you can overexpose by more than just one stop; I have seen picture that are 4 stops over that look great and have a specific look to them. A favourite technique of wedding photographers!

  • @themuddykip

    @themuddykip

    +Li0nsmane can I ask a bigger noob question! Do you get the lab to develop it normally or do they have to know when you've over exposed? (Sorry if this is super silly haha)

  • @Li0nsmane1

    @Li0nsmane1

    8 жыл бұрын

    Not silly at all! To keep it simple: in order to get that overexposed Portra look you should not ask your lab do anything different during the developing process. When you shoot a ISO 400 film as an ISO 200 you are overexposing (or technically speaking you are also 'pushing') it in the camera, so if you then tell your lab that you have overexposed your film they might try to counteract that by 'pulling' the film during the chemical developing process so you would be counteracting the pushing-overexposure you did in the camera which would defeat the purpose of getting that look you want. ALSO 'pulling' colour negative film in general is a bad idea as it ends up making murky and dull images, thats something thats normally only used for B&W film. If you want to learn a bit more about it Richard Photo Lab has posted good article on 'pushing' and 'pulling' a while back. BUT how a lab scans makes a huge difference to final image and this is the part of the process where you should make requests if you can (not all labs listen to your scanning preferences). Describe the kind of look you are after and perhaps show them some sample images and ask them to adjust their scanning accordingly.

  • @NegativeFeedback

    Supposedly film with iso under 800 is fine being x-ray'd, I've never had a problem with that, but haven't travelled with high iso film. For this instance I just ordered the film to the address i was staying at so that I didn't have to worry. However I've travelled through 6 scanners with my film (portra 400) on a different trip and didn't notice any damage to the film. You can always ask for a hand check if you're worried

    Hey man! great work, just watching your videos, love it! I'm French but have been living in LA for a few years, in Venice/Santa Monica. Insightful to hear your pov on the city, the skatepark, the people, etc. Eager to have your pov on my last shot I took after watching your video series on the Venice Beach skatepark: instagram.com/p/BjFexQclu7t/?taken-by=sidewalk_by_tj

    Should you ever come back, don't waste your time buying film through Amazon, Los Angeles isn't some backwater you can buy most any film you want at Freestyle photo in Hollywood or Sammy's camera in the Fairfax district. You can even have chrome processed and get it back in a day at the Icon film lab.
