    Your last 8x10 video was part of the reason I tried to get into 8x10 with an Intrepid. I am still mentally recovering from that debacle.

    Five seconds in and you've already made me feel better. I use 4x5 and exposed an entire FOUR sheets of film in 2020. To make it worse, a) I was merely mucking about with a new-to-me monolight and a tailor's dummy and, b) I broke one of the blimmin' springs on the bail back in the process. During 2021, I crawled back into my cave where I could cause little damage! Well done, brave you, for getting out there and feeding your lovely camera!

    Great works. I like how you addressed the obvious camera being there actually allows the subject embraces the fact that the camera is there. One thing I'd like to ask is that, having such a short DOF, how did you make sure the subject didn't move after you compose and be in focus? what aperture/ shutter speed did you shoot at?

  • @NegativeFeedback

    @NegativeFeedback

    I just have to be very clear whilst i'm setting up the camera, and make them aware that when i'm focused they need to try and stay still. Most of these images were shot at f5.6 which is the most open these lenses go, I think shutter speeds were around 1/8 for most - was quite a dark day.

  • @ThatHoserCanadian

    @ThatHoserCanadian

    @@NegativeFeedback yes! I use a modern Russian army rucksack to carry my 8x10 up the mountains here in Canada for my photography. The difference between that and a camera bag for proper back support is insane. Especially when you get one with a frame built into it. Makes a huge difference. Before I would only bring my 8x10 to places in the mountains I could drive too. The backpacks are meant to make it as easy as possible for a soldier to carry 75-100lbs of equipment. Even a hiking rucksack will do the trick.

    The cost of film for a 8x10 would not allow me to use this format. So I use expired photographic paper in what's called the reverse positive process. Besides providing a very distinctive look and reducing the costs per sheet to only a few cents even for my 11x14 camera, this way you also get unique originals you can put on the wall just like an oil painting. I really like your pictures. Personally I'm not fond of those razor thin sharpness areas most large format photographers seem to aim for, and I was quite happy that you too quite often aim for getting the whole person in focus, not just the eyes and the tip of the nose, where already the ears are out of focus. By the way, a 300mm lens on an 8x10 is equivalent to 39mm on "normal" full frame or 35mm cameras. The equivalent of 50mm on an 8x10 would be 385mm.
