Johnny, Ed, Ed thanks for the very clear video to cut through the Sh*** er um stuff where shooting glasses are concerned! Like many I'm slightly near sighted and have some astigmatism. I'm also a sunglass/sport glass nerd. When I got into the clay target games a few decades ago I invested in my first pair of "real" shooting glasses. Those were Decot HyWyd glasses with an RX lens that was correct but a strong vermillion tint for me was too much of a color shift which caused fatigue and visual "mush" after awhile. I then added a couple pairs of Randolph Ranger glasses with a BUNCH of different lens colors. Ed was spot on about paying more attention to lens color swapping. I've pretty much used my dark purple for about 90% of my shooting for the last several years until my RX has shifted enough to where it's time to order new lenses. Brown is also used but I find orange and yellow flatten everything out and make things mush similar to the strong vermillion. I'm now in some RX Oakley glasses with a very light purple base tint and when I get my newest RX I'll order another set of lenses for my Rangers. Something for people to be aware of is that the top quality shooting glasses are surprising in just how durable and tough they are. My various glasses have been through the wringer for many years and other than dealing with damaged or out of RX lenses they keep on going. One other thing is that for shooters that need RX lenses take the time and find a DR that understands the shooting sports or at the least sports vision in general. Thanks again!

I am a Canadian, I just went to Nuuk Greenland and I was surprised to find there is a clay shooting range called “Godthåb Jagtforening” it is the most scenic shooting range ever. And I must say that shooting clays there is almost impossible without proper shooting glasses due to the powerful sun

Excellent video as ever, I've been on the fence about prescription lenses for shooting. I have astigmatism and my current set of everyday glasses corrects this. Wasn't sure how difficult this would be to replicate for shooting glasses. I would need to get hold of my prescription.

H Jonny, a lot of my local shoots use a mixture of orange, white and black clays in both high light sky and shaded wooded area backgrounds which makes it a bit of a mare as to which colour lenses to use and it's a faff to change lens on my set up. I just normally use copper/rust lenses.

Glad you can add content that's relevant to shooting that's not just gun reviews

This is really interesting because my girlfriend asks me every week we go to the clay grounds about what colour to use and this breaks it down perfectly to give her an understanding of what application suits each colour.

When using an insert for Pilla glasses I had to do my eye test while wearing the Pilla lenses without the insert so that we could eliminate the curvature on the lenses when using the insert, worked perfectly after that.

Thanks for clearing up the colors of lenses. Question: What does Dr Ed have to say about contact lenses and how they relate to shooting glasses? Any know complications to be aware of?

@@chadnolte9134 I have a lot of shooters in contacts as if their prescription is higher, shooting glasses can be heavy and impractical. There are limitations though as “off the shelf” lenses don’t always correct the refractive error fully, especially when astigmatism is involved. On the other hand, really high astigmatism can ONLY be corrected by bespoke curve Scleral or Hybrid contacts as glasses cause too much aberration. Maybe we need to do a five min chat through on this next time 👍

Nice information and interesting, only problem is I shoot black clays against grass and different sky's clear clouds raining so what colour would be a all-rounder for black clays

Polarized versus non-polarized. I have heard people say polarized are not a good choice for shooting lenses but I heard Ed say he likes polarized. Is it just personal preference or is there any technical reason to go one way or the other? I would normally assume polarized are the way to go for most things (less glare).

I also love my polarised lenses as I’m glare averse - I’ve had some clients find polarised lenses take too much light away and others who feel they make them nauseous. Mine are pretty much always on for driving, shooting…the works

I would also like to hear their thoughts on this. I have read many times that polarized glasses aren't good for shooting for a few reasons. One of them being that polarized lenses can affect your depth perception.

Some of the optometric “depth perception tests” use polarised screens, so if viewing that through a polarised set of lenses, the result will be poor. If we look at their practical uses in sports such as fly fishing and shooting, this has no adverse effect on real world stereopsis and depth perception at all 😎

Very personal to be honest, I do still use my polar bronze for a lot of game shooting plus a saffron for low light which pretty much covers me for 95% of my game shooting.

Great video.i have a stigmatizm and sometimes use contacts for shooting.then put tinted glasses on.never feels the same visually as when i shoot in my normal glasses.would there be any particular reason for this?

Could you review USA shooters vs English shooters and how different we are in styles of clays and bird hunting

The different colour lenses used to help with orange clays, do they work with standard black clays as well.

Hello, what glasses are Eds wearing? Thx for the answer

Help. As a right handed shooter for 50 years I have had times when my left eye would become dominant My question is would it help to have my left eye lens 20% darker than my right eye. I use Morgan lens and usually only wear the medium target orange color. My prescription is heavy near sited 20/400 with a stigmatism The best fitting frames I ever used was a Serengeti Victor with my own prescription lens. It appears at my age that I may also be looking a cataract surgery. This obviously would correct the vision to 20/10 and the stigmatism Our skeet exec suggested Pilla Panther X6 glasses. What are your thoughts. Thanks Paul D Martin.

Paul - great question. The “one lens paler one lens darker” trick is about as effective as wearing different coloured socks. If you’re close to having a lens replacement surgery, I would consider having your shooting eye done early ie now, with the very best premium distance monofocal lens they offer as this on its own may solve the eye dom issue for good! Let me know what happens Ed

With regards to long range shooting, what would be the best colors to be able to see Mirage when viewing through a spotting scope or rifle scope? Is there a color that helps to show Mirage more easily?

No mention of rifle scopes and the interaction between shooting glasses and the optical coatings used on scopes. Scopes limit the light transmission so sunglasses aren’t always the best choice.

This was purely in the context of clay shooting, I’m sure there are some who have data re optics though.

I could have used this video 2 months ago when I was trying to explain to the eye doctor why I wanted a purple tint. They were lost.

What about black clays which lens is best for them

I’m red green colour blind only fractionally. It paid dividends trying out various lenses for orange clay on green background.It’s a very personal thing because I didn’t go with the usual recommended option

I have astigmatism and tried inserts one time. It took 4 attempts to grab my gun off the rack

What about transition lenses is there a shooting version available of these. I love my transitions for everyday use but a shooting pair would be awesome.

2k for glasses? I mean if it's just astigmatism, why not just have that laser done with that much money? I'm just saying I have a bad one, and $2k min, mine is probably almost $4k. Why not buy some laser surgery, and cheaper glasses? I don't get it.

Laser is SO much better than it used to be, and I see far fewer shooters with post-op complications than I did even five years ago. The whole process is a lot less invasive and more elegant these days. However, some people have disastrous complications - last November I had a client fly to the Uk from the US. He’d spent 1/4M USD on multiple eye surgeries which just…went wrong. I see one or two per month who struggle with sore eyes, glare, haloes and reduced contrast sensitivity. These usually correlate with “cheaper” surgeries, but as I mention above, even a billionaire can suffer a screw up. Some people have corneal issues or are out of range rx-wise, others are simply risk averse but still want the best visual outcome, hence spending serious money on serious eyewear.

Try not to laugh, but my vision is really not the greatest 2060 in my left 2030 in my right with a stigmatism and narrow field of view. I struggle especially depending on the day. What can I say? I love to shoot. Would contact lenses help my vision more than any other thing?

Overcomplicating things to sell expensive glasses.

Sorry if you found it complicated. What we’re saying is, there isn’t a “right answer” so testing products out yourself is best to find what tint suits you. There are plenty of options to suit all budgets, but superior optical quality will always be at a higher price 👍

Interesting, no mention of colour-blind in the video or (as far as I can see) the comments. Which is a surprise as I think 25% of men are, and there is nothing like a bit of red-green colour blindness to totally screw up a going away yellow against a green background. Or is it the other way around?

Between 1 in 12 and 1 in 8. In women it’s much rarer at 1 in 400. I did discuss the genetic inheritance and cone cell distribution but it was edited out as we had complaints things were too “sciencey” 😑 Pilla make great RG lenses, the RGHL and LL are super 👍

I've had Decot and Ranger glasses for close to 30 years. The only thing that I've changed out are the lenses when my RX has changed. Same frames which have taken rough use. I think that the Edwards Eyewear shooting glasses run Titanium frames which should be more durable than the Monel and Iconel metals that my frames are built out of.

@@BrokenBarBox don't worry :) i went just once with a friend. the place was desert so it was only the 2 of us having fun. i shot both trap and hunting clays and i had fun, ay more fun than i expected. first because i was able to hit most of them (less with trap but it's harder :) second because shooting something that moves is way funnyer :). i can't wait for the next range day...

Colour doesn't make the blindest bit of difference just shade .your eyes adapt to what ever you put infront of them .eg after seconds of wearing them you can't tell and when you remove them to drive .it only looks weird for a few seconds then it's normal again.

You've been looking through your eyes since birth in every conceivable light condition trust them . I've seen world champions shoot and win with sunglasses borrowed from random spectators. Do we put coloured lenses on scopes

Eg tennis players to highlight the tennis ball against the background or cricketers to pick out a ball either being fielded or hit the list is endless . Most of the stuff shooter's buy can last decades our only repeat purchases are cartridges and clays so manufacturers need to convince us to buy stuff we don't really need just waiting for interchangeable coloured lenses on binoculars and scopes

I think this can almost be related to the optics on rifle issue. There are several that would rather see someone use an inexpensive priced rifle with a very good piece of glass vs a high end rifle with a very inexpensive piece of glass. Just a thought.

Thank you for making this video. I found it informative. After taking the effort to share with me, I feel compelled to add a little of what I have learned. You mentioned your preference for Trivex. I switched to Trivex a year ago for my everyday glasses after a discussion with my friend (a former physics major) about my concern that the high index of refraction lenses I was wearing at the time seemed to lack sharpness. A brief search of the internet confirmed my observation which I now attribute to what is called the Abbe Number en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbe_number. Trivex is superior to high index lenses in its Abbe Number, it doesn’t distort color as much, resulting in sharper vision. Yes, the lenses weigh more but it’s worth it to have sharper vision. I see a couple of comments about pairing shooting glasses with contact lenses or having laser eye surgery. At the suggestion of my optometrist I wear scleral contacts with my shooting glasses. I have pretty bad astigmatism. Standard hard lens contacts would rotate in my eyes when I blinked, slowing my ability to achieve hard focus. Prescription inserts had all the issues Ed S. mentioned and more. Looking through two lenses, I lost twice as much light in low-light conditions. I’m very pleased with my scleral lenses. I feel like I see better with them than ever before and my vision test confirms it. Negatives: They are expensive. Being larger in diameter, they are more difficult to insert. By pairing contacts with shooting glasses, not only are the lenses less expensive, I can use lenses/frames that wrap further around my head, reducing glare from light coming from behind the lenses.
