Well if he's buying you time with his life, then don't squander it by just standing there.

Not to mention absolutely trashing your night vision.
Since its very dark flaming arrows were used to see the direction of escaping enemies..the archers distance is very far while some of their allies are within reach of the enemies. For identification , they need to see clan color or crest
In the book when the pilot was given the right to retain and train 200 Samurai, the first thing he made them do was to learn how to swim. Virtually none of them could except his 1st officer. Pilot told them they would all learn to swim or die.
"TODA HIROKATSU!!!"
Holy shit did that "Quick, to the galley while we still have the chance" line give me Baldurs Gate 1 escaping Candlekeep with Gorion scene flashbacks.
Despite how terrible the way Buntaro treated his wife (Mariko), he does possess a redeemable quality as a loyal samurai; not to mention he's quite a badass too.

Toranaga really knows how to use nobles with a death wish doesn't he.
When he survived that offscreen, for a tiny while i thought he may have been a traitor. But no he was as valiant as we saw and by the end, ive come to like him too (the very last scene when he seem to share in the grief of losing mariko with Anjin)

I also thought he was a traitor. Especially since he was behaving like an ass. But no he was a badass hero, he was just having a bad mariage, and generally a rough life. He even remains loyal after the incident with his father.

He beat the crap out of his wife. No matter how many other redeeming qualities he has. Nor the fact he's probably the best warrior in the show... That act is unforgivable, and thus so is he.

Very good warrior badass Toda Buntaro Hiromatsu san samursi and loyalist too👊🏻👍🏻

Toda Hirokatsu-san is the way to address a person in and after the 20th century. Toda Hirokatsu-dono (meaning lord) is the proper way to address a Samurai in those days (Edo period).

Bad guy: 'my lord asks _why FT are you leaving?'_ Absolute Genius: "No doubt he understands I must serve my pledge to Toranaga. And please remind your lord, _I keep my promises."_ 😉
How could you have a successful ambush if you have flaming arrows? The torches you have ready to light them would give away your presence. (admittedly I haven't seen the show, just this clip. Love to see it though, looks like an amazing production)

Its a psychological effect that creates fear in the battlefield.

@@matcha_546 Eh, fire arrows are not a thing in real combat. Sometimes in sieges yes, but they serve no real purpose in other types of battles. Not even in naval warfare. Greek fire was a good weapon but burning arrows are not as effect.

Hattori Hanzo!!!! Must watch now.
I liked that bunty guy at the end
While I detest the use of fire arrows, it seems to be a mandatory thing while shooting film in darkness. It lights up the battlefield for your audience to see everything but doesn't make sense in real life.

Actually the good old Tod from Tod's Workshop here on youtube did a video about the history of medieval fire arrows about a week ago Worth watching I would say
Is this a safe space? Can I just say that Buntaro is really...
Did they have archers there on the dock looking at him or was that just torches? Why didnt he just funnel all of them on the dock bridge😅
@Lessen0
Ай бұрын
I had that same thought, but he ends up surviving this scene after all, so apparently he made the right call. If he stayed on the dock, he could've killed more of them (assuming no archers) but he had nowhere to escape to and would probably tire eventually, so he broke through them and escaped instead.
Filthy casual here. It seems fire arrows are not giving much benefit to the attacker while letting the defender know where you are.

Fire arrows are like modern tracer bullets, helping to illuminate targets in the dark.

Just speaking from a technology and culture standpoint - you're probably right. For flesh-on-flesh combat they're not much of an advantage but they're intimidating from an infrastructure standpoint. There's almost no way to control rampant fire with their resources which makes them terrifying in a primal way. Docks, roofing, even boats are threatened by them which can incite panic in the defenders. Half of warfare is the shock and awe after all.
buntaro was a bmf
If I were him, I would just jump into the water and swim to the ship with everyone else. Easy peasy.

If he really wanted to hold out longer for his lord, he should have stayed on the gangway so that the enemies could only come to him one at a time. Instead he ran to them and got surrounded.

@@tvgerbil1984: You are right, but if I understand it correctly it ws not buying time for his lord but more case of die honorable death fighting when was clear his lord was not comming back for him. And in such situation is brave last charge even preferable option. He knew he would die anyway and captivity would bring him only shame so quicker death is better in this case and he could be tired from previous fights. So more reasons for wanting to end it quickly.
