Since its very dark flaming arrows were used to see the direction of escaping enemies..the archers distance is very far while some of their allies are within reach of the enemies. For identification , they need to see clan color or crest

In the book when the pilot was given the right to retain and train 200 Samurai, the first thing he made them do was to learn how to swim. Virtually none of them could except his 1st officer. Pilot told them they would all learn to swim or die.

Despite how terrible the way Buntaro treated his wife (Mariko), he does possess a redeemable quality as a loyal samurai; not to mention he's quite a badass too.

When he survived that offscreen, for a tiny while i thought he may have been a traitor. But no he was as valiant as we saw and by the end, ive come to like him too (the very last scene when he seem to share in the grief of losing mariko with Anjin)

I also thought he was a traitor. Especially since he was behaving like an ass. But no he was a badass hero, he was just having a bad mariage, and generally a rough life. He even remains loyal after the incident with his father.

He beat the crap out of his wife. No matter how many other redeeming qualities he has. Nor the fact he's probably the best warrior in the show... That act is unforgivable, and thus so is he.

How could you have a successful ambush if you have flaming arrows? The torches you have ready to light them would give away your presence. (admittedly I haven't seen the show, just this clip. Love to see it though, looks like an amazing production)

I had that same thought, but he ends up surviving this scene after all, so apparently he made the right call. If he stayed on the dock, he could've killed more of them (assuming no archers) but he had nowhere to escape to and would probably tire eventually, so he broke through them and escaped instead.

Just speaking from a technology and culture standpoint - you're probably right. For flesh-on-flesh combat they're not much of an advantage but they're intimidating from an infrastructure standpoint. There's almost no way to control rampant fire with their resources which makes them terrifying in a primal way. Docks, roofing, even boats are threatened by them which can incite panic in the defenders. Half of warfare is the shock and awe after all.

@@tvgerbil1984: You are right, but if I understand it correctly it ws not buying time for his lord but more case of die honorable death fighting when was clear his lord was not comming back for him. And in such situation is brave last charge even preferable option. He knew he would die anyway and captivity would bring him only shame so quicker death is better in this case and he could be tired from previous fights. So more reasons for wanting to end it quickly.
